Subject: RE: Bad Reviews Posting a Tori Amos apologia to a Tori Amos mailing list is an exercise in sheer silliness. Even if Amos, or her music, was in need of defense, why preach to the converted? But I'm not here to preach. In fact, I'm only writing to say that all of the bad reviews posted these past few days have in common more than just a dislike of Tori's latest musical essay. Not only are they bad reviews but they're bad bad reviews. That's to say, there's a difference between a good bad review and a bad bad review. All critics, art critics, book critics, even pop music critics, know exactly what I'm talking about--though only the good critics would fess up. Southern novelist Walker Percy, who saw his own share of good and bad reviews, draws a better distinction. He says that there are four types of reviews-"three of which are depressing and one of which is, at best, tolerable" (that would be the good bad review, in case anybody's interested). Of the bad, bad review he writes: "It's a hateful review in which the reviewer hates the book for reasons he is unwilling to disclose. He is offended. But he must find other reasons for attacking the book than the cause of the offense. He or she is on to the secret that novel writing is a serious business in which the novelist is out both to give joy and draw blood...The name of this reviewer's game is: "Okay, you want to play rough? Very well, here comes yours..." A bad bad review doesn't really hurt. Getting hit by a an offended reviewer reminds me of the old guy on Laugh-In who would make a pass at Ruth Buzzi on the park bench and get slammed across the chops by a soft purse. It's really a love tap." Tori's music does not consent to "a quick read." I think that's what some music critics find offensive. It makes their jobs harder than it already is, than it really has to be. In fact, if you were to read all of these negative reviews-reviews which, with an almost preternatural conformity, focus exclusively on Tori's lyrical, rather than musical, efforts-and had to, in one sentence, summarize their most common complaint, you could say, along with the author of the May 3rd Daily News article, "What, precisely, do such things mean?" But that kind of critical analysis just doesn't do it for me. It reminds me of those publishers who turned down Proust, of those critics who accused James Joyce of being willfully incomprehensible. Thank God Finnegans Wake got more attention than a brief two-paragraph critique in People magazine. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 May 1998 11:25:16 -0400 From: "Tori's new album debut's May 5th!!!" It's different, but I love it! Yet this isn't why I'm posting. On my way out of the record store, I leafed through the German alternative/rock magazine "Visions". I don't know if ettienne is a "grey ears" but there's a lot of wisdom in those words. We know how powerful Tori's music and messages are. Maybe the rest of the world will discover her too, but if they don't it's their loss, not ours. Tori's music is about honesty, self-examination, and raw emotions. Those things make a lot of people very uncomfortable. The people who are hiding their pain from themselves react with anger when you poke their hiding place. Tori pokes a lot of people in uncomfortable spots. She pushes the envelope; rocks the proverbial boat, and lots of other cliches. And when you challenge someone's belief system they often react by directing all their repressed anger at the person who tried to wake them from their self-ignorant sleep. Dangerous business. I'm surprised that Tori and her music haven't elicited even more venom than has so far been displayed. So get ready. The more popular her music becomes the more people there will be who are going to jump on the TrashTori bandwagon. I couldn't really understand much of what she was singing, it was so loud. The big problem with stadiums especially, is that you really need earplugs. (Luckily, they are not expensive.) I think I'm beginning to dread concerts, I hate to say this but it seems I have never in my life have been able to enjoy live concerts, maybe live albums, but not concerts. Thus partly sums up me and my pathetic existence... (thank god for bootlegs and radio shows, or I wouldn't even be hearing these conceerts.) On a strange note-despite my apparent hatred of concerts I am dying to see Depeche Mode when they tour America. They hadn't really toured for some time (due to David Gahan's little drug problem), and from what I have heard, their fans can just be as rabid as we Torimaniacs and the tickets will probably sell out just as quickly. Due to my rediscovery of them (the album ULTRA was great, the song Home, in my humble opinion was incredible, the best song on the album, practicly revelatory, which is quite sad due to the fact that I never felt my home was really "home", in the psycological sense) I'm going to grit my teeth and buy the tickets. I am also excited about the WOMAD festival, an outdoor concert with alot of artists from all around the world (Africa, Isreal, Ireland, India, Canada, the Americas, etc...), arts and crafts, ethnic food, etc,... and when it comes to Redmond, WA it will be lasting for three days! Not to sound unfair here, but I sincerly feel that WOMAD is destined to kick the Lilith Fair's ass!
