I've lost the addresses of contributors. Debbie asked: > i was wondering if anybody has ever ordered from "Music Machine" and > if so, how their experience with this online store was? Music Machine is probably *THE* first store ever mentioned with any regularly on the Really Deep Thoughts mailing list from the beginning, back in May, 1992. I believe the store has since changed locations, but it's still in the Baltmore, Maryland area. I bought from the guy once at a record convention, and he was charging fair prices for what he had, as opposed to another stand that had some of the same items, and I respect that about him. No one has mentioned this place on the lists in quite a long time, and it's good to see that they seem to be getting around to having an internet presence. The guy seems genuinely interested in Tori, and not trying simply to squeeze every drop of cash out of everything that he possibly can. > thanks :) You bet. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 08:08:54 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: 4-track promo & Philly Beth Coulter said: > *Jackie's Strength*--[...]Yes, her strength, her courage in the face of > tragedy. And are you aware she lost a baby also?? Actually, she lost THREE. She suffered a miscarriage and a stillborn daughter before she became first lady, and then lost a prematurely-born son while she was first lady. I think awareness of the background of Jackie will add an incredible amount of extra depth of meaning to anyone listening to the song. The official White House web site has a good, short bio of her at-- http://www2.whitehouse.gov/WH/glimpse/firstladies/html/jk35.html > *Playboy Mommy*--[...]*apoligies to those who think music takes > precedence over lyrics* Goodness--do some people really think of music this way, with either music or lyrics being more important than the other? Some people perceive lyrics before music, and for some of us, we experience the music as going directly into our bodies unfiltered by language in a way that makes us experience it instantly, whereas we may have to work a bit to get up to speed on what the lyrics are on about. Surely, for Tori songs in particular, the music and the lyrics often work in marvelous synergy at a level which is rare. This is why sometimes when you read Tori's lyrics they seem to make little sense, but if you hear them sung with the music they quickly show themselves to be making *perfect* sense. I'm still trying to figure out how she does that. This is also the reason I have yet to bother to read all the lyrics for choirgirl, although I may find time soon, as I expect not to be standing in lines up and down the eastern seaboard this week. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 10:55:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: Tori, changed? I know with everything she's been through--- to use > the roller coster cliche/metaphor--- I'm just wondering if anyone else > would like to comment on this. Well, first of all, I just want to say that although Tori shares an incredible amount of her personal triumphs and tragedies with us, there is clearly much more going on in her personal life than we will ever know about, so, yeah, anyone would be changed by all that. You're right. I'm sure the new difficulties of getting a band together to tour on the road, and having to come to terms with all the new technology she used to record the album and is using onstage for this tour has also been daunting for her. Anyone who ever saw her struggle with which stops to pull out on the harmonium on the Dew Drop Inn tour and heard her talk about being a klutz will have a appreciation for the amount of effort someone as mechanically disinclined as is she would have needed to expend, to have gotten up to speed on having gone so electric. I will admit to having been in enough of a state of shock when she saw me Thursday morning and came over to talk with me that I didn't notice as much as I wish I had about her overall state, but one friend who was with me who also had gotten used to regularly speaking with her on the DDI tour said he thought she looked "older." I know that she was jet-lagged enough the day before the Thursday Letterman taping that her personal security and friend Joel was turning away even people who had appointments to see her at the hotel--much to their consternation. I did have a sense of her having a lot on her mind when I was talking with her, but she was as "in the moment" as she always was when I'd spoken with her other times on the last tour, and she was still incredibly sweet. I think it's only natural that she's scared silly by the prospect of doing such (in a lot of ways) different music than we're all used to, and in fact, the main reason I felt I had to be there was to offer my support to her--to tell her how moved by the new material I'd been and how I was sure that, even though I knew her ass was hanging pretty far out the window with this album (yes, I did say those words to her), that she had nothing to worry about. > But my heart goes out to her. I wonder if this "music making stuff" is > really what she wants to be doing right now.... I think it absolutely is--under these circumstances. Would she prefer to now be spending time with her baby daughter? Of course. But since the miscarriage, the music helped her get herself back on her feet. There's no way she's ever gonna not have the music be the main thing in her life-- other than certain personal relationships and family. She was born that way. She's also ambitious as all get-out. And on an unrelated note, for those on the west coast of the U.S. who haven't seen this yet, check out the wonderful Paul Robeson story on CBS Sunday Morning just into the start of the third half-hour of the show, and then listen over the closing credits for the late Mr. Robeson to sing, with his towering basso profundo, the old Methodist hymn, "(There is a) Balm in Gilead," which is a song that Tori's poppa used to sing to her, and which she performed in Oakland, California on July 12, 1996 (the late show). Very moving. Last night's peformance on Letterman was just too much. Tori was simply stunning. Her vocals sound so different than from her previous works. The only thing I'm a little sad about is the fact that I liked the Letterman version even better than the album version. When she got to the How many fates, and ended with the POWERFUL Say you don't want it again and again, my eyes were filled with tears. The album version has emotion, but not the emotion of her performance last night. I think I'm going to have to copy that onto CD. I really pray someone will record the concerts. >> Hey- I feel it is my civic duty to say something here, even though I'm sure I am going to get flamed like it's hell on Earth... I must be the only person on this list who thought her performance was just - eh. It was great to see her and see her playing Spark but I didn't like the way the keyboard sounded on the mix... And the keyboard mic level was just a little bit too low. Also, none of her band mates seemed to be into it. They didn't realy rock the song too well... Caton had his one moment but that was really it. When Tori was on the piano was the only time that the sound quality came anywhere near the song on the CD. I also feel that the CD version is much more emotional than her version on Letterman. She just didn't rock like she does live... She didn't capture that emotion - that feeling. It just sorta seemed to me that the band was not ready for a live show. Sorry about this if you were just blown away - It probably had something to do with the atmosphere where I was watching but I thought I would voice my side of this. Thanx for listening... I acompletely agree with whoever was saying that she appears to be dealing with something behind the scenes(which she is most definately enititled to) I am just worried. First off, if anyone owns the RAINN video, watch it again, keeping in mind that it was recorded less than a month after her miscarriage. You can totally tell. She keeps cradelling something in her arms that isn't there, and she acts very distant and she adds lines to MANY of the songs which refer indirectly to the miscarriage(in my opinion) During Cornflake Girl, she adds the line "I know that your with me girl" repeatedly. Many times. And the Cornflake Girl dance definatley starts with a cradelling motion. I can't compare it to previous Cornflake Girl dances, however. I definately think Tori's anguish was recorded on that performance and I feel almost invasive watching it with that knowledge. Secondly, on the Letterman thing I saw something, but I'm not sure if it was the same, but she was different. Her face looks totally different on that, and in the Q magazine! Totally different! I think maybe she had plastic surgery, but that's beside the point. She seemed a little sad maybe but I don't know. Everyone should read the Neu Revue magazine article. It is a Dutch magazine(you can read it on the Dent I believe) It definately shows that this miscarriage is taking a heavy toll on her. The article also left me wondering if she really wants to be married to Mark. Why do I feel something really big is going on that no one knows about? I don't think it is just the miscarriage. I really don't. I'm worried. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #136 *************************************
