This was just posted to rec.music.tori-amos.. It's VERY revealing. (But remember, I didn't write it..)\ I have had my advance copy of the new Tori Amos CD 'From The Choirgirl Hotel' for a few days now. As a frequent visitor to this newsgroup I know there is huge excitement about the new album and thought I would post a very amateur review in the hope that it may be of interest to some of you. Whatever your thoughts this is just one persons opinion so take it with a pinch of salt. Right....on with the important stuff. < Tori Amos - From The Choirgirl Hotel 1. Spark 4.12 2. Cruel 4.05 3. Black Dove (January) 4.36 4. Raspberry Swirl 3.57 5. Jackie's Strength 4.26 6. iieee 4.08 7. Liquid Diamonds 6.20 8. She's Your Cocaine 3.41 9. Northern Lad 4.17 10. Hotel 5.18 11. Playboy Mommy 4.08 12. Pandora's Aquarium 4.48 Total Running Time: 54.05 Spark - A song many of you will have heard and set to be the first single. Kicks of with slightly distorted vocals 'She's addicted to nicoteen patches..' and slowly builds from a dark first verse to a quite lovely sweeping chorus where the piano comes in. Not unfamiliar Tori territory but hinting at different things to come. Quite moving references to her sad miscarriage 'She's convinced she could hold back a glacier/But she couldn't keep baby alive'. A nice bit in the middle where she hits out the lines with bashes at the piano and from that point it is a stronger and stronger build to a crescendo of overdubbed vocals and backing vocals. Ends as it begins with a repeat of the first verse and a return to the dark broody distorted vocals. Cruel - Warm dance beat with industrial effects until Tori almost slurs out the first verse in a seductive drawl. Chorus 'I can be cruel/I don't know why....'. More effects, sounds like a motorbike starting up, a bit of scratching too. This song as an almost hypnotic feel as the chorus stays at exactly the same pace as the verses. Combined with the bass-heavy beat and breathy vocals - a very sexy song. Ends with much breathing into mike and siren-like wailing in the backround. Black Dove (January) - 'She was January girl..'. Very quiet, understated build up here with sublte synth/piano backing. Sort of a double chorus with a refrain of 'Black dove/black dove/you're not a helicopter.....Black dove/black dove/you don't need a spaceship' in a similar gentle tone to the rest of the song which is then immediately followed with a huge crescendo, ripe with loud piano of 'On the other side of the galaxy/on the other side of the galaxy'. Raspberry Swirl - Twangy guitar intro and then we are almost into techno territory! 'Let's go!' Tori proclaims and the beats pick up. A rousing dance number than it sure to get a massive remix treatment. At times it is slightly reminiscent of some of the stuff on the Garbage album, especially with some fuzzy distorted vocals, but it is a fairly tenuous comparision. This is unmistakable Tori with lush overdubbed backing vocals. Hard to see this one being performed behind a piano - will she get up and groove when she does this live? An almost anthemic stomper. Jackie's Strength - Perhaps a more familiar Tori sound. Gentle, fragile piano and light strings. '..the wedding day/shots rang out/the police came'. The tune of the verses sound, in places, similar to a song called 'The Queen & The Soldier' on Suzanne Vega's first album. Not exactly alike, but you know when a song reminds you of another? A stunning lilting chorus accompanied by strings which get more and more prominent with each refrain. A song that could quite easily have been on Little Earthquakes. Beautiful. iieee - My vote for best song title. Similar dance beat to Cruel. Not surprisingly a fair bit of wailing going on at the beginning. A repeated background refrain of 'iieee' if you can imagine that pronounced correctly! Takes a few listens to pick the song structure out of this but once it comes it is stunning. Not a linear song, lots of tempo changes and no verse/chorus structure. Rocks out in the middle with much industrial clanging. Liquid Diamonds - Very quiet build up to another industrial dance beat - gentle though. Piano comes in over the top. It is a minute in before the vocals hit. Chorus has her 'nice fat cigar' barroom drawl in full effect. Another song that takes a number of listens before it makes itself known. When you first hear this album you will find it hard to recall this track but it does blossom with repeated listening. She's Your Cocaine - Crunchy electric guitars with Tori's distorted vocals. This is a rock number if ever there was one. A song about the controlling influence of women - 'She's in control...she's your cocaine'. A little 70s piano break in the middle. One to be played extra loud. Northern Lad - More straighforward love song about a northern lad she had, it would appear. 'Girl you gotta know/when its time to turn the page.' She seems quite taken with the 'way he bent his knees'. Turns a bit bitter with 'You don't show much these days/you get so fucking cool/loved the secret places/but I can't go anymore'. The word 'fucking' is almost spat out. Hotel - Peculiar bleepy dance noises. First verse sung over the top and then the beats speed up and get more fragmented. Many tempo and vocal changes - distorted/wailing/breathy. Repeated refrain of 'Met him in a hotel/met him in a hotel'. I have listened to this dozens of times and am still trying to get me head round it. Challenging and experimental. Playboy Mommy - It would seem that this is the song that deals msot directly with her sad miscarriage. With that knowledge in mind it is an immensely moving song and, at times, quite difficult to listen to. It is, however, incredibly beautiful. Brushed drums and piano with the vocals mixed very much to the fore. 'Then my baby came before I found/the magic help to keep her happy' and 'Don't judge me so harsh, little girl/you got a Playboy mommy'. Pandora's Aquarium - Last song and a return to a more familair piano/vocal combination. Perhaps the only song that could fairly receive the familiar Joni Mitchell/Kate Bush comparisions. Threatens to build to a crescendo throughout but actually stays at the same pace and gently fades away with breathy vocals and fragile piano notes like raindrops. And there you have it. I haven't remotely done the album justice but I hope this is useful to many of you. Overall I think the album could be the best thing she has done. It has many very immediate and instant tracks but also has a number of gems that only appear after repeated listening. It is also a definite progression. She is experimenting more vocally and also with different dance beats and tempos but it is still very much a Tori album with the elements I, for one, love. Never flinching from a challenge and often demanding and difficult 'From The Choirgirl Hotel' never disappoints. For your information my copy has a cover where Tori is pictured from behind lying on a sheet of glass so her hair and skin and clothes are all flattened and squashed in places. The background is black and the title runs down the left hand side in white lower case lettering. >> Tripp Gwyn tgwyn@infoave.net ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Apr 1998 10:15:37 -0400 From: "Geoff Moore" Subject: Re: WARNING!!!WARNING!!! I just read an email about someone telling how TM worked in their city. Well here in Houston, there are several ticket master outlets. Basically, at every Randall's and Fiesta (supermarkets), at every Foley's department store, and at every Blockbuster Music store. Then you have every telephone operator taking ticket sales over the phone. So you see, every Houstonian and people in the surrounding areas that want tickets to particluar show are literally racing against each other for tickets. So at 10 am or whenever tickets go on sale, tons of people across town are at their local grocery/dept store waiting in line for tickets. And they all spit out of the machines at the same time. Our ticketmaster also gives out first come first serve tickets. SO if your cashier guy/lady is clueless to the TM system, they are a detriment to you, the buyer. In my experiences, one lady was clueless, at 10 am when tickets went on sale, she spent the first minutes looking up the sale code, trying to fig out how to get lawn seats, etc. In the meantime, hundred of tickets and the GOOD seats are going out to people across the city. I was very distraught when I got UNCOVERED RESERVED seat for the No DOubt show because of this. Yes, they were seats, better than lawn, but I could have had better seats if I didn't have an incompetent cashier lady. Speaking of which, IT RAINED THAT NIGHT! >( Also, another note. I am trying to become an educated TM buyer, becuz it stresses me out each time ticket sales come around. 1.) Do a little research. This requires calling in to TM, or going by a sales location. YOU *NEED* to find what tickets are going on sale that day and at what time. >>The day I went to get BUSH tickets, TINA TURNER and RODEO tickets all started selling at the same time. I was the 3rd in line for BUSH but the 18th in line overall. (I know its a fairly good spot in line, but if you are shooting for somewhere in the center, this is a problem) Many were their for TINA and they dont separate the lines by the show you want to see. SO then it took even more time to switch back and forth between both shows.<< 2.) Find an unpopular TM location. Don't hit Blockbuster where all the hippest people go. Don't go to a foley's that is known for long TM lines. If you choose carefully, you can probably arive an 1-2 hrs before ticket time and still be first. My suggestions are where you wouldn't think most people would go. Most grocery stores are pretty good, but be sure you check to make sure your cashier is skilled w/ TM operations. And if you arrive at a place that has a long line, there is probably another TM outlet down the street. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS. 3.) Call in advance to see if they will be doing a lottery. Most TM only do this if the show is in great demand. The No DOubt show wasn't a lottery but the day TINA came to town, they did a lottery. It all depends, so if you plan on getting there early, YOU DONT WANT A LOTTERY. **The way our lotteries work are: you get there stand in line till about an 1-2 before tix go on sale they pass out little tickets w/ #'s on them. They draw a cuttoff point about 1/2 an hr before ticket sales. All people not making the cut (ie late arrivals) are asked to step all the way back. They draw a ticket, announce the #, the person with that # becomes the first in line. All others with tickets line up behind #1 according to the numerical order after #1. (I.e. the new first person's # was 159, ticket holder 160 is next, and so on.) The line reforms, and non-tix holder line-up at the end. If you aren't and early bird, but you get there in sufficent time to recieve a lottery ticket then a lottery is not a bad choice. 4.) TAKE CHARGE. >>After reading club tour tix stories, I read some really good ideas that were all fan-driven. Someone had a really good overnight experience because everything was so organized. Don't be afraid, everyone there wants good seats just like you and probably dont want to have to deal with the hassle of line-cutters. Take some notebook paper and a pen. When you get to the line. Tell them your plan. "Could everyone sign this list with NAME, # of tix you want, and Seat Preff (i.e. Pit, lawn, etc.) This will ensure no line-cutting when more people arrive..." And you can give the list to the cashier so he can just spit the tickets out for the first people on the list and worry about the cash later. Remember: It's a first avail. seating process, the machine decides your destiny. So with a list of how many tickets, the guy can spit them out all at once without having to stop for each transaction. I'm sure everyone will appreciate it. In the end, it's every man for himself at TM and being organized will make it better in the long run. ****Note: this probably won't work if a lottery is held. But maybe if you are a smooth talker, you can get them to not hold a lottery**** 5.) BRING CASH. TM doesn't accept anything else. Sorry about the length of this, but I knew many people were wondering about Ticketmaster. You can tell everyone the basics, but I felt that knowing a strategy would help those first time TM goers. I hope some of ideas help. I know how most feel about TM, I hope this makes it a little more bearable. For those of you who didn't realize it, smoe.org is run by a fairly cool guy named Jeff Wasilko who hosts a large number of music-related mailing lists on his non-commercial site at no charge to those running the lists (or those subscribing to them). He invests his money and time in keeping smoe.org running smoothly so that lists like precious-things have a place to call home. The two servers that make up smoe.org are currently about 7 years old (which is pretty old for computer hardware) and Jeff would like to replace them before their inevitable decline begins to noticably effect their performance, which of course would cause problems for all the lists he hosts. As you might expect, replacing these machines with new servers requires a fairly hefty investment. This is where the smoe.org "begathon" comes in. In order to help get the money to pay for new servers a gentleman named Mike Connell, who runs the Jewel list and several other lists at smoe.org, has volunteered to organize a fundraising drive. Mike will be sending a message to precious-things (and to all the lists hosted at smoe.org) explaining all of this in greater detail and letting you all know how you can contribute. Donations are not mandatory, but any amount you can spare will be greatly appreciated. So when you see a message about the smoe.org fundraising effort posted by Mike Connell please take the time to read it. It is legitimate and has the full blessing of both woj and I. I was starting to get a little worried myself when I heard it anounced on the local alternative station 2 days before...but then even later, on Saturday, while having breakfast we picked up a copy of the "Reader", the local free weekly paper and they had also taken out a full page ad on the show, and their paper comes out on Thursday. I had no idea it was going to be as advertised as much as it was, and that's really too bad. It kind of spoils the whole "for the fans" feel about the tour and turns it into a big hyped thing. And when I saw that ad I really remember thinking to myself "Is this the way Tori planned it?" From everything I'd heard on this list prior, I didn't think so. So there's no way I can be angry at Tori for this, I think it kind of spiraled out of her control and the intentions were still good. I guess that most good secrets just can't be kept for too long! ;) About Ticketmaster, I've never had problems getting tickets through them. Since I don't have a credit card, I can't even go the phone route, I just get to a local outlet and get in line about an hour early, and usually I've been one of the first ones there. I've never gotten *great* seats but at least I can get them! All that other crap, the surcharge, the lottery, whatever, I can forgive it only because I'm so fucking happy I can get tickets. I learned my lesson with this last attempt, that if it is to be done that way (including all the advertising) that I'd have to have nothing but time on my hands at that point of my life to make those kinds of efforts to get tickets to see a show. Otherwise, I just don't have the energy, particularly after a long work week to go through such strenuous efforts. That's just too extreme for me. I was in line for a concert once and the girl in front of me wanted three tickets she got 25th row but when I ordered just one I got 9th...no kidding. I asked the TM guy about it and because TM looks for the three seats together it most likely will be father back but there are usually single seats up closer and most people aren't buying just one ticket. That happened to me again when I was going to the Tori show in Mississippi (jackson) although I didn't buy those tickets through ticket master there was some chain of music stores and I called one of them for two tickets and got the 20th row. A week in a half before the show I called a different store and ordered one ticket and got the 12th row. At that concert there were big blocks of empty seats up closer then where I was sitting and I heard these two guys talking apparently one of them was a owner of those stores and he said something to the effect that each store was given a block of tickets to sell and some of the stores sold better. I thought that to be totally unfair because depending on which store you called you either got good seats or bad seats. The best way my friends and I have found to get tickets is to locate at least two TM places that usually don't have a line we get there when they open usually about four of us go so that we are buying two tickets each instead of four (to get better seats). We are real nice to the TM person who is working the computer we get them to put in all our info in early and they usually will start trying five min before the tickets go on sale just in case they can get in there early. Also we start calling on a cell phone while in line if it's a big show just to assure we will get tickets we've ended up with extras but never have trouble selling them. This may sound crazy to a lot of people but Arkansas doesn't get too many good concerts so we are usually buying for one in Memphis or Dallas and there are a lot more people you are racing against there to get good seats. I'm not saying this is sure fire but it has always works for us. The last Tori concert I went to for the tickets I went to this little car audio and alarm place, got there when they opened, was real nice to the guy that worked there asking him to explain the radar detectors and alarm systems to me, about 10 min before they went on sale I handed him my money and he entered my info and started trying to get me a ticket...the min they went on sale I had my second row seat and the girl behind me had two seats on the third row...it went beautifully...I hope everyone has good luck getting seats to the larger shows...hope my experiences can help you... Please read through this message so you know exactly what this will mean. As stated in the welcome message sent out to all subscribers when they joined this list, the purpose of precious-things is to provide a forum for Tori Amos discussion which has a higher signal and lower volume than the other mailing lists and newsgroups. Lately, however, precious-things has come to resemble a chat room, with a high volume of relatively short and fairly meaningless posts. In order to return precious-things to some semblence of what its original vision was, we have decided to make it into a moderated mailing list. This means that *every* message sent to the list will need to be approved by one of the list owners before it is delivered to the rest of the subscribers. Given the existence of the really-deep-thoughts-right-now mailing list and the rec.music.tori-amos newsgroup, we do not feel that moderating will detract from the Tori Amos community on the net and may even enhance it by providing a lower volume alternative for those who would otherwise not be able to participate in the unmoderated fora. So what sort of messages are likely to be approved and which are not? To start with, any message that simply relates factual information about Tori (tour dates, television appearances, etc) will almost always be approved. The only exceptions will be when more than one person sends the same information to the list at about the same time, in which case only one of the messages will be sent on to the subscribers. The other messages that are likely to meet with approval are a bit harder to clearly define. The basic rule is that we are looking for discussion rather than chatter, and that discussion must focus on Tori rather than just mentioning her in passing. What constitutes discussion and what is just idle chatter is of course a matter of opinion, but one basic rule of thumb is that unless you are asking or answering a question that involves simple facts (such as "What singles is Honey available on?") you shouldn't be writing one or two line messages. If you have an opinion take the time to explain why you have that opinion. As for the things that will almost certainly not get approved, here's a slightly expanded list of what is unacceptable: * Ad hominen attacks or flamewars. * Posts that do not directly pertain to either Tori or her work, i.e., no debates about feminism, religion, rape, etc. please. We are not saying that these topics should never be mentioned or discussed, since they obviously do relate to Tori and her music, only that such discussion should be limited to how these topics relate to Tori rather than general discussions of the issues. * Offers or requests for trades, concert recordings, or bootlegs (please use rdt, r.m.t-a or the tori-boot mailing list for this). * Any message which is in a format other than plain text, such as HTML or MIME. * "Me too" posts * Replies which are of interest only to the person being replied to (and therefore should be sent via private email). Please note that if your message is not approved you will not be sent a rejection notice of any sort, you will simply not see your message appear on the list. Also note that running this list is not a full-time job for either woj or I so there will usually be some delay between the time you send a message and the time it appears on the list. How long this delay is will vary depending on the time of day you send your message, but most of the time it should be less than 24 hours (not counting any delays caused by the many things that are beyond our control).
