[<- hey Don, bet you expected something like this :)] I was in Los Angeles when I heard this record for the first time. I was hanging out in the rock chick scene. Thigh-high boots, gigantic amounts of hairspray, and everything. I had encountered nothing but rejection for months, nobody liked my piano stuff. And I was in a band that did something completely different. Then I found this record, and put it on, listened to side one, liked it OK, listened to side two, listened to side two again, and again, and again and again (sings): "You can't hear me, you can't hear what I'm saying, you didn't hear me come in, you won't hear me leaving." This turned me inside out. It changed my life. I decided to leave the man with whom I shared an appartment; I left the man I was living with because of this record." There's an almost full-page-sized photograph of Tori sitting on the floor, back leaned against the wall, next to a CD rack, holding up "Pearl" and "Inner Visions" in one hand. The photo is credited to one Brian Rasic. The article features no further information besides the list of albums and Tori's comments. Among the other CDs in the rack and on the floor there are: Talk Talk - The Very Best of Kate Bush - The Whole Story Radiohead - OK Computer Katell Keineg - O Seasons O Castles Madeleine Peyroux - Dreamland Chris Rea - Nothing to Fear Edwyn Collins - I'm not following you and lots others I can't identify, but it's not sure whether these are Tori's own CDs or just some photo studio props anyway. ciao, Rolf ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 09:44:54 -0500 From: Beth Coulter Subject: re: A Case of You > >In a message dated 98-03-28 05:08:42 EST, Tasha325@aol.com writes: > ><< could someone please tell me where to find the lyrics to "a case of you" >and > who it was originally by? > also, was it released on any singles? >> > > It was originally done by Joni Mitchell on her album "Blue", and Tori >released her version of the song on a limited edition Cornflake Girl single, >wich is worth alot now. Hi- I've been having this argument with a friend for a while and I wanna bounce it off everyone in here. (Since the friend in question doesn't have Email, I'll bring her the results later) Tori Amos is nearly impossible to compare with other music, but when it comes to her piano playing, who is she more comparable to? Elton John or Billy Joel? I've been using arguments like "well, he does this, that and the other just like Tori..." (in reference to style, playing skill, improv, etc, etc) so don't limit it just to the music. What they all do is just as important as what they sing, tho' I do wanna hear how you think they compare musically too.... Finally getting a chance to respond to a few things on this list after a basic week from hell...I'll start with the good stuff, it's easier. I've always wanted to hear Tori cover "Not My Slave" by Oingo Boingo...you know, maybe slow it down a bit and give it the right punches and accents where needed....I love that song.. Also, now that she's with a full band it seems to open up so many more possibilites...I wouldn't mind hearing her covering a Portishead tune with a band. The first one that springs to mind is "Glory Box" off of "Dummy". That is the torchiest, smokiest tune and it would kick some serious ass to hear her do it. Also, I heard someone mention "Dance Along the Edge" by Concrete Blonde, and I've always thought that would work....I also would go for hearing "Hallelujah", as was also previously mentioned, but just so ya know, that is a Leonard Cohen original and not Jeff Buckley (although his version of it breaks my heart every time I hear it). That's all I can think of for that but I wanted to touch on a topic that's been disturbing me a bit for the last couple of weeks and that is the constant need to censor "inappropriate content" from this list...I am in full awareness and agreement of what this list is for, to discuss Tori Amos and her work, and not to babble on about whatever we want, but I've seen a few cases where Tori is involved in the subject somehow, maybe being compared to another artist or what have you, but there's still certain people on this list who take it upon themselves to say it's "inappropriate" just because it's not 100% Tori. Well, that's their opinion, and unless they are one of the list owners, I don't think it's their right to jump in and censor people. Another instance of this is even when it HAS been Tori related and these certain people just don't feel comfortable with the subject matter, or the way it's being dealt with. That's fine if you think they're being inappropriate and you're merely "reacting" to things they've said, but please don't tell them they cannot discuss them! Isn't that going against what Tori has tried to teach us with her music, that we all have demons and it's best to deal with them and NOT supress them? That you have to take the good WITH the bad? That's just MY opinion on this subject, and I realize that it's more to do with fundumental personal values than Tori directly, so if that's a problem it may be best to respond to the subject matter off the list, for real, I don't want to get TOO off-topic and piss off the list owners.(even more than I probably already have) For those who want to react to my fundamental values, you have my e-mail address. Anything else, if you want to discuss your feelings on Tori's marraige or miscarraige, personally I don't care if you discuss these things, I just may not always agree with what you say, but I feel that people have a right to put their feelings out there, whatever they are, without someone coming along and telling them NOT to. I WILL be shutting up about this now. Take care all! Cynthia "Did you realize noone can see inside your view? Did you realize the world inside belongs to you?" "one day. I am goingtogrow wings. a chemical reaction. hysterical and useless. hysterical & letdown and hanging around. crushed like a bug in the ground..." What they >all do is just as important as what they sing, tho' I do wanna hear how >you think they compare musically too.... > Thanx :) > Warren My initial reaction is a little bit of both. She has the classical of Joel with the extravagance of John. But then I concluded that Elton is every bit as classical as Billy is showy, so in order to say which one she was more like, then I would have to catalog the differences. So I venture to say that Tori contains the best of both mixed in with the best of her and we have someone Very Unique. And to catalog the differences between John & Joel would completely take away the pleasure I get from both. But personally, I've loved Billy since Cold Spring Harbor and thought it was incredibly appropriate that Tori gave him the Lifetime achievement award on the Grammy's(I think) several years ago. I adore piano players. ;) Fairy Blessings, Bethey I'm OK when everything's not OK cause it's the Fairies Revenge they say and I have always been a Fairy *************************************************************** I gave my life to become the person I am. By chance my friend is close w/ some Atlantic rep chick and she gave up a pamphlet will all of the lyrics in them. It is not the CD booklet. I'm gonna bring it to school on Monday & scan it so I don't have to print them all out. So, I guess if anyone wants them, I can send 'em along! I don't recommend it though. It's just a tease!!! I was so thrilled! :) Anyway she was going to sing Father Lucifer and asked me what version I would like to hear.. I was like "Umm the album one I guess, you don't do the harmony section in concert do you?" Heh... FL wouldn't be my first choice to hear, it would probably be... hmm...precious things :) That would be wonderful... the album version with all the great cacophany of instruments *drools* Oh by the way, converted someone to our side today. :) Played about 15 Tori songs and he was convinced to buy BfP by the end of the afternoon. yay :) He gets it too, that makes me so happy! I was reading Wall Of Sound's front page more carefully and here's what I found: - ------- Just in time for this year's Lilith Fair tour comes a double-CD of highlights from last year's trek, featuring live performances by Sarah McLachlan and all her friends. One week later, the woman who arguably started this decade's women-in-rock movement, Tori Amos, delivers her long-awaited fifth effort, from the choirgirl hotel. Preview both albums, along with upcoming new releases from Scott Weiland, Bonnie Raitt, Blur, Jerry Cantrell, Pulp, Page & Plant, and the Dave Matthews Band. Release Dates: March 31-May 5 - ------ Ok, cool, they call Tori "the woman who started this decade's women-in-rock movement", but then they say the new album is her fifth one. Oh well, nothing's perfect. Oh, and by the way, another album to be released in May 5th will be Garbage's new one, "Version 2.0". Chart competence starts to build itself. Garbage's new single "Push It" is going to be released on April 20th (or 21th) in the US, do you think maybe "Spark" will be released the same day? I certainly hope so, but the sooner the better. I don't want to RANT, but Atlantic is angering me!! You'd think they would have updated the Tori site! Not even samples of ONE track! At least a month before the new Clannad album was released they at least put the album in the discography section and loaded samples of 4 tracks! I hope they'll do something soon, I'm getting TOO excited. I hope someone will make samples from the PROMO sampler soon, and I can't wait for Kloegirl's lyrics on mon!
