I used to work at the Nature Company in Milwaukee, WI and, of course, I was heavy into Tori. This was right about the time that UtP came out. I was still in the stage of "well, im obsessed with this unknown but fabulous artist and people dont really want to hear about how much her music speaks to me" kinda thing. So I never talked about tori cuz i just assumed that people would go "Who?". Well, one weekend when tori was playing at the Riverside (she actually played at my alma mater Marquette University when she was just starting out---ooooooo I whish I'da seen that!) and i was regretting missing the show, this gray haired older gentleman breezed in. He looked all distracted and when he saw me, one of the first things that he said was "I went to the Tori Amos concert and that woman is phenomenal!" I was nothing less than dumfounded. I found a most unlikely soul-mate! We talked Tori for a while, and then i think he left without even looking at anything in the store. It was so cool--its like we were drawn to each other! I just wanted to share that. So heres to "gray ears" everywhere!!!! Daisy melanie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 1998 11:34:48 EST From: Adia509@aol.com Subject: The Spacedog Now Campiagn; and a joke to lighten things up OK, if we are to make this a succsesful campaign then let me give you guys some ideas to start out with. 1. There are radio stations that I think will play Spacedog, we just have to listen for them-for example, on 103.7 The Mountain FM in Seattle,WA actually played Ice Cream from Sarah McLachlan's album Fumbling Toward's Ecstacy! Listen, then demand, demand, demand!!! Or you could just call stations up and tell them about the campaign. 2. If your a DJ or know one personnaly, sneak it in or ask/demand/beg them to play it! 3. Flood in letters to Tori for requests to make it into a single. (After all, if she wants a fan-driven club tour, why not a fan-driven single? 4. The obvious remixers-Rabbit in the Moon and Brothers in Rythum. (With a little help from Tricky, Moby, Garbage, BT, Underworld, Brian Eno, Pet Shop Boys, Roni Size, Uberzone, Flood, John Fryer, and Gavin MacKillop) 5. The obvious official remix single would be like-more loud, yet also more liquidy and ambient. It would have to be simular, but the last bit with "so sure those girls now are in the Navy, those bombs our friends can't eve hurt you now, and hold those tears cause they're still on your side, don't hear the dogs barking don't say you know we've gone Andromeda, stood with those girls before the hair in pairs it just got nasty, and now those girls are gone" part should be moe emphasized, the "so shure we were on to something" part should be softer and off in the background. 6. And if of course she ever comes out with a remix album it will have to be on that album. (In fact, it could be the single that would promote that album!) 7. Print this post out on the printer or something. (As a campaign reminder) 8. E-mail me for updates. I'll e-mail you for updates, etc, etc... 9. Of course, there are more important things for me to do in life, like campaigning for human rights and better food safety and environmental and job safety standards, but even though I'm out of a job, nearly 21, never dated in my life much less had sex because I can barely even bring up the courage to act like I'm interested in men in thier presence, been spending most of my time in bed sleeping 18 hours a day, and when I'm awake I spend all my time on the net looking at wetbsites about Tori, playing her music over and over -oh God, I'm really a fucking loser without a life, I'll never get a fucking job again because I'm such an fucking asshole while I am on the job, can't barely even get along with fucking regular people, much less understand other human beings, my work history is fucking shot to hell because of my fucking addititude, I'll probably end up like one of those fucking homeless people in a box in an alley babbling to myself, god I hate my life- Oops, where did all that come from? Look, if there are any other losers like me please give me an e-mail, I'll need them until I can findly move, get a job, grow a garden, and find me some horses to ride on, to ride on... And now for the little joke... Howard had felt guilty all day long. No matter how much he tried to foret about it, he couldn't. The sense of guilt and betrayal overwhelmed him. But every once in a whil he'd hear that soothing voice trying to reassure him-"Howard, don't worry about it. You aren't the first doctor to sleep with one of his patients, and you won't be the last." But sooner or later another voice would bring hom back to reality- "Howard, you're a veterinarian." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 1998 14:50:55 EST From: Erinbest@aol.com Subject: Club Tour Venue Speculations... hey Everyone So I was just thinking, is everyone pretty much assuming that all the club venues are going to be 21 and up shows? Because most clubs are, so I guess my question is kind of dumb, but I'm stressing about about this because I *am* going to the show when she comes to Seattle, even if she is coming back for a normal tour, I *will* hear her on the club tour, but I am just wondering if I should be trying to figure out a fake ID plan or something. Howdy you Hamburger Maids and Mr. Zebras, Well I posted my news on the precious things doodle, but I shall share with you "thoughtful" ones as well. So hello you precious people and thoughtful ones. I think I am confused now. I signed "Winter" for my American Sign Language II class and they absolutely LOVED the song. They probably liked it more than my signing since silly me kept signing "rabbit" instead of "horses" I was hoping no one would notice, but they probably did and were too nice to say something about it. The teacher recorded all our performances so she shall see my mistake even more. Oh joy. Anywho, I finished my song and everyone was like "Oh my god, that song is so pretty". They were all asking who was singing this gorgeous song and asking me if they could see my cd. Even my teacher was like, in shock looking all over my lyric sheet to see who the singer was. So, I wouldn't be surprised if a few more newbies appear at my school. It's about time the discover the wonderful Tori Amos! Ah the joy of sharing Tori. I converted my friends whose birthday is this Fri. 13th and I am getting her the "Little Earthquakes" cd. I suppose that is all I have to say. And I am an idiot and have been trying to play "Here in My Head" for like 4 weeks and I am still only on the third page. That's what I get for quitting 5 years ago. Oh well. Take care of yourselves. I guess I've gotten so used to having to discuss my experiences (in my case, physical limitations) without letting the emotional or philosophical components into it. Sometimes people have asked me about it, and asked what I thought or how I felt about it, and it was like my story was real until I got emotional about it. In the short time I've really been listening to her music, the one overriding thing I connect with is her openness and honesty, even if it's something that must have been difficult to write and perform about. I don't connect on a literal level, but still, I don't think I've ever felt so inspired than when I first gave her music a real listen. I do small-scale video production (producing my own cable TV show) and have tried writing some, but I could never figure out why I'd look at my work and feel like something was missing. Then it started to hit me, and then hit me even more when I heard Tori's music, that the one thing I was leaving out of my work was myself! I was trying to be creative and keeping myself out of it, so to speak, and the video work was looking very cold and precise, if that makes sense. Nowadays the old 'in your face' approach has been replaced with me simply starting off each show (the few I've done this year so far anyway) with 'Hi, I'm Simon, hope you like my show'. And the response to the 'nicer' face on it has been so much better- people like meeting me in person knowing that me in person is the same person they saw on TV, nothing hidden. Tori puts so much of herself into her music, knowing the risks, and not letting that phase her. I admire her for having the courage to do that, and perhaps this gets too melodramatic, but if I ever had the chance to meet her in person, I'd thank her for inspiring me for the first time in my life to be myself, do what I believe in, and not be phased by what other people might think. It feels so good now to do what I really like (like be a Tori fan in the open :-) ) without feeling like Montag or Winston Smith. > >>bracing for the flames, and the katana is at the ready if I've offended >anyone. > >I make it a practice to avoid flaming anybody, but I'd find nothing to >flame here even if I were inclined to it. >Welcome to the list :) thanks for the welcome! It is probably a good thought and half of my mind agrees. However, to take the role of the Devil's advocate for a moment. Shouldn't the public and listeners control and determine if they like a song instead of some marketing strategist? I'd personally rather not be cattle, but rather, the one that decides for myself what and when I want to listen to something, just as the rest of the public. If a SpaceDog grass-roots effort actually worked, not only would the old album sell more, it would give momentum to her new album and be a free bonus to her and all involved. All the marketing guys would do is tighten the ties around their necks and push the release date because there would suddenly be a media blitz and even more hype that the underground started an old song to become another hit now. It would then be justified why the album would be released a little later along with any new songs on it. Okay, Devil's advocate role 'off.' If you really like the music today and dislike the music of tomorrow (which could be electronic-monk vibes for all we know), you will be having this argument again in 20 years on the other side when they have axed your 'classic' music for the sounds of monk. The whole point is that people are trying to find out some way to confirm *before* going around and saying it's true. That's pretty decent. My ISP had to correct it. The trouble is originating at Smoe.Org. If you notice, the list has been coming out from Jane.Smoe.Org the past few days, instead of Smoe.Org, so it looks like we're on some sort of backup account. On this Jane.Smoe.Org account, we seem to be caught in a forwarding loop, where forwarding has been set up on several hosts; if that is the case, then messages sent to the list are getting caught in an endless loop as they go from one computer to the next, to the next, to the next, and the messages are redelivered as they hit each new host. According to the digest's expanded header (I'm not on the bounce version), there are several hosts that the list is going through. Somewhere along the line, things are going screwy for you guys on the bounce version. And it will keep getting worse and worse until Smoe is told about the problem. The solution is for subscribers to send expanded headers from the repeat messages to so that they can investigate and correct the problem. You need to pick one of the messages you've gotten repeatedly (for example, "Argh!") and paste each of "Argh!"s expanded headers all in one mail with several spaces between each of the headers; at the beginning of your message, include an explanation that you've been receiving the same messages repeatedly and say something like "below are the various headers that one of them arrived with". You can also say you suspect posts from the list are caught in a loop of some sort. Once Smoe knows about the problem, they should be able to fix it pretty quickly. I can't complain to them myself, because while the repeated messages have been showing up in the digest version, the digest itself has been arriving only once, so the repeated deliveries are directly affecting only you folks on the bounce version. That means you're the ones who hold the key in the headers YOU'VE been getting. Hope this helps. If someone else has already posted anything about this, forgive me saying it again -- remember...I won't see new messages until the digest comes out later. Violet xoxox ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 1998 23:55:05 -0500 From: woj Subject: el nino strikes smoe.org! man, what a mess. to all of you with flooded mailboxes and overrun folders, i apologize about the recent mail loop on precious-things. as usual, it happened at the worst possible time -- i worked late last night and then had a volleyball game. when i got home around 10:30pm, there was a frantic message from richard handal on the answering machine, but by then, jeff wasilko (smoe.god) had already figured out what was going on. unfortunately, it took me a while to find that out since there were 2208 -- yes, *2208* -- bounces in ye olde mailbox. by the time i dug out, i was even more frazzled than i was before hearing richard's message -- so apologies if jeff already explained what happened. seems that someone somehow managed to subscribe *the list to itself*. i remember seeing the subscribe notification wednesday night and thinking it looked weird, but i didn't realize how. wish i had -- would have saved some heartache. unlike what some folks have said, this wasn't a majordomo problem or related to the recent appearance of jane in smoe.org -- just some bad luck at a bad time. i'm going to try to tweak majordomo so that this sort of mail loop doesn't happen again, but allow me to reiterate /nad and violet's advice: if mail from precious-things ever starts looping again, STOP POSTING! you'll only make it worse. the best thing you can do is write mike curry and myself at , carbon copy jeff and let us know what's happening so we can fix it. thanks and sorry again, woj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 1998 23:58:47 -0500 From: "~the franchise~ forever t-boz's guy" Subject: Re: The Spacedog Now Campaign Allow me to clarify my previous statement... you have to understand, my slam on classic rock and oldies stations partially stems from the fact that in Northeast PA, where I reside, we are basically forced to have four flavors of music radio to choose from: classic rock, oldies, country, and Top 40... and even some of the Top 40 stations seem to have a problem playing new/recent stuff nowadays... I don't get it... Maybe if there were more variety in locally available radio formats (i.e. not having to hook the damn cable up to the receiver just so I can hear black music via a Philadelphia station), I wouldn't bitch about it so much. But don't get me wrong, I'm not a fickle listener that rejects music after a couple of years for the next big thing... I still like a lot of the music that I have grownup with over the past couple of decades, but I'm always curious to hear new material in general... 9 times out of 10 I am not disappointed. Essentially, a lot of this disgust stems from how reluctant some people are to free themselves from the "good music stopped around 1975" syndrome... that's basically where I am coming from. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #58 ************************************
