I first heard 'God' back in early '94 and it was so totally different from what I had been listening to at that time- I know it sounds cliche but I honestly can't describe my reaction to it. I'd been listening to nothing but metal at that time, and I regret not being bold enough to start getting the CD's back then but sad to say I wasn't bold enough to do it at that time. A long time ago a relationship I was in fell apart and I created a very cold and unfeeling facade thinking by doing that I wouldn't get hurt again. The thing is though over time it reached a point where I suppressed things even to myself (if that's possible!). Anything remotely emotional was forbidden and it worked for a while. But gradually it got harder to keep going with it. In early 1994 a friend played a few tracks from 'Under The Pink' and I was literally overwhelmed by what I heard. I still get mad at myself for letting my concern that my friends would object keep me from going out and getting the CD then. I saw Tori on TV in February '96 and was impressed even more, but it took another two years to finally break down and decide to be a Tori fan out in the open. I always felt like Montag in Farenhiet 451, but last month I was at a local store getting blank video tapes and rolled past the CD's, and Little Earthquakes was right at my level. A few days later I was listening to it on my portable CD on a ride home from a meeting on a Friday evening and was so drawn in by Me and a Gun that I didn't know the van had arrived at my home until the driver turned on the inside lights. pardon the melodrama, and I hope latecomers to Tori's music are welcome as fans. Seriously, Tori puts so much of herself and her experiences into her music, is it stealing to feeling affected by it even though my own experiences in life fall a few light years short? What I feel is after hearing her music is for me so impossible to describe, but I know that her music is something very special and the last thing I want is to be connecting with something I don't have the right to. bracing for the flames, and the katana is at the ready if I've offended anyone. Or it could just be that I have about 25 live Jewel shows and have heard a much better range of her work than what is on her albumor what they play on the radio. And I do not see the resemblance in the videos to Tori's work. Is it because there is a horse in the video, or something? If you make a derogatory comment about a person or song or video, please back it up with reasons. On to my next point, I think that Toriphiles tend to judge anyone who plays the piano against Tori. Just because Jewel might use piano on one of her songs, or because Fiona Apple's music is built around the piano, doesn't mean that they are trying to rip off Tori. (On the other hand I see Paula Cole as a rip off of a mix of Tori and Sarah McLachlan, but I could be mistaken. It's just that the do-do, do-do-do in "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone" is just like the do-do, do-do-do in one of Sarah's songs, and Paula's hand motions are very similar to Sarah's, but who knows.) I play the piano better than any other of my instruments. My music is very passionate and piano based. That does not mean that I am ripping off Tori (although one song is a definite Precious Things rip off, but it was the first song I ever wrote. I don't think that counts. And I wouldn't release it as a single for that reason.) Anyhoo, this wasn't meant to flame. I just felt the need to point this out. You guys have been great and supportive in the past, but we all (Including me as in my Paula Cole example above) have our freaky judgemental side. It seems that her ankle stress fracture that nearly kept her out of the games happened while she was skating to "Winter", trying to fit in the trip axels and all, and she determined that the song no longer held *the magic* that it once had and she needed something else to get her back in shape. I'm not saying she won't do "Winter" for her event, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I don't think that they are so much copying Tori, but Tori has allowed them to perform as *they* want. If it resembles Tori, perhaps it is because Tori was just the first to *cross the line* as far as female performers go. Back in the olden days (70s, 80s) female musicians either stood still with their hands wrapped around the mike or hid behind their instruments. They were either totally *slutty, nutty* or sweet and demure. Tori Amos is a Woman with none of those lables, as are most of us female types. She was the first, don't condemn her to be the *only*. Just my $.02. (uh, anyone keeping track of all the tuppences being thrown at the lists? A single new CD boot should go for US$20-US$30; a double new CD boot should go for $40-$55. You can find that boot for a lot cheaper many other places. Truthfully, I would try to return it since it's so overpriced, but that's just me. If you want a CD version of this, I highly recommend Rainy Day Records. They're in Key West, FL, but they'll ship anywhere {shipping in the US is $5, no matter how much you order; contact them for information on overseas shipping}. You can give them a call at (800)636-6166, or drop them an email at rainy@conch.net. I don't recall their URL offhand, but they don't list bootlegs on their page anyway, so it doesn't make that much different. I find it interesting that you would characterize Over the Rainbow as a children's song, Laura. The song was written by the great American songwriting team of Harold Arlen and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It was destined for the cutting room floor as it was considered not to move the plot along and the film was thought to be too long. Of course, it became easily the most famous song from the film. Cluefulness won that one, thank goodness. :-) BTW, on the Jupiter EP there's a major typo in the songwriter's credit for Rainbow. There is no "Ralen"--it's Harold *Arlen*. Arlen is one of my favorite composers of popular standards, and that typo really pissed me off. Some would say if it's on an official release of a Tori CD or book it has to be true. I suggest that those who believe that rethink their position. It ain't so. There are a number of such errors. And if official items such as this can't be trusted, what does that say about other things? Can things randomly discovered on the internet be trusted? How about if we know it is a supposedly trustworthy news source? A number of online news sites have articles stating that Tori was on the Lilith Fair tour. She was not. She was *hoped* by the creators of Lilith Fair to be a participant, that's all. Those inaccurate citations could have quite easily been checked. No one could be bothered by the facts, apparently. And then others can easily come along and refer to those sites as proof that Tori *was* on the Lilith Fair tour. But that doesn't make it so. It just makes folks confused. So, in a further step, can we trust things any person who happens to have internet access and about whom nothing is known says about anything unless we verify it through other sources? Absolutely not! Critical thinking is, well, critical. Accepting rumor as fact is a fool's game. People make mistakes. People spread false rumors. Some people even have delusions. I know what I'm talking about. I've met my share of them. > I really love Judy Garland and all her work, and It brought tears to my > eyes to hear Tori reencact childhood memories. Perhaps it's the childhood memories evoked by Rainbow that encourage your thinking of it as a children's song, Laura. That's understandable. > So I may also be missing something, but what is the CONNECTION Tori has > with Judy Garland.... Judy Garland was the only performer I am aware of who had as deeply a personal relationship with her fans as Tori does. If you listen to the Grammy Award-winning album "Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall," which was recorded on April 23, 1961, you can hear the emotion *dripping* out of the speakers and filling the room. Something I heartily recommend. I have to think that Tori felt some of that emotion herself when she heard Judy. > PT,"and Judy Garland taking Buddah by the hand.." > This has always puzzeld me, DOES ANYBODY KNOW?! I always took it simply mean to refer to disparate people who had died who Tori wanted to consider as having the opportunity to meet in the hereafter. Please. Now wait just a minute. And before I go any further, I want everyone to know that I have nothing against Laryza or anyone that might have been offended by this discussion. I am really, really trying to *not* offend people. I do have to wonder, though, who "took offense" to the latest posts. First of all, there weren't that many posts to begin with, and secondly, I read none that were in any way extreme. Everything that was written seemed to be quite benign to me - nobody was pushing their ideas on anybody else, and I don't think there was anything written that Tori hadn't already expressed in song or interview. I would be very interested to hear some opinions (whether privately or on the list). Religion is a big part of Tori and her music, and I feel this is a very relevant discussion. And if your faith in your religion so delicate that a few E-mails from total strangers are scaring you, I'm surprised you're even listening to Tori. Adia509@aol.com sez: >I'm getting sick of critics comparing every new female artist with Tori >simply because she plays piano! "i'm getting sick of critics comparing every new female artist with KaTe bush simply because she plays piano! talent and spirit are two different things, and i feel tori amos plays from a different spirit than KaTe does!" that's more or less a paraphrase of what i'd periodically post to love-hounds (the KaTe bush mailing list) back when _little earthquakes_ was released. i guess this is just another example of -- pardon the cliche -- "the more things change, the more things stay the same". the frame of reference just changes, that's all. "Capriccio 191" sez: >On to my next point, I think that Toriphiles tend to judge anyone who >plays the piano against Tori. while i agree with this, i think this behavior is just a specific example of a more generic pattern: women in music seem to be described in terms of how they are compared to some one else rather than in terms of what they sound like. i don't know why this is -- it's merely an observation (and one i've seen many others make as well). >On the other hand I >see Paula Cole as a rip off of a mix of Tori and Sarah McLachlan, for what it's worth, while paula cole's latest album does sound strikingly similar to sarah mclachlan at times, i don't think it's an overt attempt, on paula's part, to capitalize on sarah's popularity. geffen records, on the other hand, could have this criticism leveled against them, though even that accusation is on dicey ground since _this fire_ is a pretty natural progression from _harbinger_. nonetheless, i think saying that paula is a tori/sarah rip-off is skimming the issue: paula's angst is quite a bit different than sarah's and, though similar to tori's, doesn't come from quite the same place. Beth Coulter sez: >I don't think that they are so much >copying Tori, but Tori has allowed them to perform as *they* want. If it >resembles Tori, perhaps it is because Tori was just the first to *cross the >line* as far as female performers go. was she really though? she was certainly part of the wave of women performers in this decade who pushed their gender into the spotlight, but i think it is too early to speculate on how important tori is as an inspiration to other *performers* (her inspiration to fans, though, is pretty clear). i'd be curious if anyone else has some thoughts on this matter. woj ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #50 ************************************
