And someone >said that in England a pale is like a way to define borders. (sorry if this already got said, I'm new...) If I remember correctly, the pale was the boundary around the main homestead in Anglo-Saxon England. And if you were visiting someone, you stood "beyond the pale" (ie, outside their land) and blew the horn or rung the bell that was there, or otherwise made a lot of noise so they could come out and invite you in. If you just came charging in, they were perfectly justified in assuming you were a raider and killing you. So I've always heard that line as, she's waiting around outside for someone to let her in. - --rebecca "There are only two worlds-- your world, which is the real world, and other worlds, the fantasy. I think everyone can sort of relate to that whole religious parents thing and "protecting" you from "evil" Tori. I myself have a 14-year-old stepson, and I don't allow Guns N Roses, some rap music, and various other artists in the house either. He thinks I'm a tyrant, but I've explained to him that he's too young to buy music with warnings on them, and I always read the lyrics to make sure the music is not demeaning to women in any way (e.g., there's a lyric on some Guns N Roses CD he has -- or shall I say "had"-- that said in a line "F--k you, bitch"). I just cannot allow that type of thing in my house. I am trying to do what I think is best, and I just cannot stomach him thinking it's okay to "hate" women in music. So my advice you to is (even though your situation is really different), is to just listen to Tori in your car or at friends' houses, and if you want to keep her stuff around, hide it. Buy a lock box. Since you're in college, you're old enough to make decisions for yourself. But it is her house,, so respect her wishes when you're there, and do what you want to when you're not at home. I don't really think you have any other choice. You may never convince her that Tori's not "evil". - -Jen ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 14:55:44 GMT From: Alicia Subject: the verbal abuse thing Hi, I'd like to say thanks to all the people that e-mailed me privately to answer my verbal abuse question. When I first started listening to Tori (I was 14, I'm 20 now), all I had was LE and that was all I listened to over and over, my mom got worried so I told her to listen to it (my mom is an old hippie and open-minded) she loved Tori, of course when your 14 thats not always so cool. Even helped me buy CD's and imports. I guess the point of this I've always taken advantage of the fact that my mom let me belive and do what I wanted, the only other time she got nervous was when my collection of Tori pictures took up one whole wall of my room. It is your mothers house and no matter how much it sucks defintly don't rub it in her face...keep pictures of Tori in your notebooks, get a walkman and listen to her that way. I first saw her at a small club in Denver soon after LE came out, and there was a bar in the back. She stopped in the middle of one song to ask people to hold it down. A friend of mine had to go outside before the show was over to get some air, while he was out there she finished the first part of the show and came out. He said she was yelling at the manager of the club about the noise. Even with all of that it was still my favorite show since I was standing about 20 feet away from her. The second time I saw her at the end of the LE tour it was a great crowd. At times the audience hardly made a sound, and at other times the cheering was very loud (even during some songs). It was probably the best show of hers I have seen I have seen her twice on all three tours, and I swear the audience has gotten a lot younger. For LE I would guess the average was mid 20's (what I was at the time). UtP was about the same, but seemed younger since I was older. BfP I am sure it was closer to 20, and I felt a lot older then most of the crowd. I know that for most concerts it is always younger fans that go, but has her audience changed over the 3 albums? Having seen Tori on all 3 of her tours so far, it has also been my experience that her audience has gotten younger...or perhaps all the older people from LE are still here, but there have been a large increase in the number of younger people. Alot of that is simply due to the fact that younger people are more into music and more accepting of more progressive forms of music. There are PLENTY of exceptions of course! Also, many of the places Tori played in 1992 were in establishments that did not allow people over 21 in! That certainly may something to do with it too! I agree with Tim about audiences getting younger and youger. I think because Tori used to play bars, she attracted an older crowd. Now that she's playing venues that don't require you to be 21 to get in, plus her added popularity at colleges, there are a lot more kids at the shows. I have, however, always seen a good number of adults at the concerts, too. The first Tori concert I went to was in Cleveland during the UTP tour. During the opening act, there were people screaming during the songs; it was like a regualar pop concert. Before Tori came out, a man walked on stage and told the crowd that anyone that was screaming earlier should either leave now or shut up. That's when *I* learned the rules, and so did the rest of the audience. There wasn't a peep from anyone until a song was done. If every concert could be that way it would be a blessing. I must admit that I actually have done this at a few shows! Once, a girl behind me was singing along to every song, and doing a good job of it, but I really wanted to just hear Tori. I turned and gave her a not-too-nice look, and on the second time she got the message and was wonderfully quite the rest of the show. Another was much worse. The young boys behind me were talking a lot of trash during the opening act (which was not -as- bad, but I did give them a few looks) and then while waiting for Tori to come on. When I heard them say disgusting things about her, though, I had to turn around and say, "I hope you're not planning on talking like that all the way through the show!" Of course they did, so finally I turned around and almost yelled at them to "Shut up!" It was really funny, because they had this horrified look on their faces, and it made me realize they must have seen me as an adult! Too funny, when I sure don't feel like one! I think each of us has a perfect right to demand respectful behavior from the rest of the audience, especially when those of us who are informed, know how Tori likes to do her shows. As we say in the horse world, "Be as gentle as you can be, but as forceful as necessary." Incidentally, at the shows at Constitution Hall in DC, the ushers told each person entering to stay seated throughout the show, only get up if you have to when the lights dim between songs, as it wrecks Tori's concentration. It is such a wonderful journey that she takes us on during a performance, and I don't want to break that connection for anything. Last July 3rd, I saw Bush, and I had been anticipating it for 3 months, they were one of my favourite bands at the time. When the opening acts played, no one really paid attention (i thought on of the opening acts, Souls, was great) and no one was showing any emotion except for myself and about 20 other people, out of the 25,000 plus that were there. I had great seats, I was sure this was going to be a great show, right o? When Bush *finally* comes out, everyone in the house was screaming during EVERY song, and it made the concert seem so impersonal. When Gavin Rossdale was speaking, you couldn't hear him, despite the huge rigs they use, because of people screaming. (little girls screaming obscene things at Gavin, at that) I think that yelling to such an extent at a show causes you to not be able to enjoy it as much if you are yelling, and you are ruining it for other people. When I go to a show, I prefer not to have horrible hearing the next day, and I can't say anyone here would disagree with me. ~*Kristy "I'm OK when everything is not OK." Ok yeah I've read a lot of posts talking about the inconvienence of people shouting during Tori's concerts.....dont flame me 4 this but...i think it is an involuntary response of some people...perhaps a personality trait that makes them think that they have to yell & scream & shout to be noticed....or there are the people who just do it to annoy others...I think these shouters really arent bad people...they just want Tori to know that they love her in their own special way...& they think that shouting is the answer. But they are also wrong in doing this b/c it is disrespectful to the other concert~ goers & to Tori expecially ! peace out~ Dusk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 18:00:28 EST From: JEDAS1@aol.com Subject: Re: little person....end of tori's career? =0AIn a message dated 1/29/98 5:49:25 PM, dsnelders@geocities.com wrote:= =0A=0A<>=0A=0AI wouldn't = worry. :) Tori's music is a safe-haven for her. What happens guys when you visit a retail record store for an inquiry is that they look it up in the weekly trade list for all Australian CD Stores called "Platterlog" . Because Platterlog is only ever a week or so ahead, GE will NOT appear in the listing yet. At the beginning of the Platterlog are the yellow weekly mailout updates so get the staff (who the majority don't know who to use the system) to check the yellow new release pages, NOT under "Soundtracks _GE" in the white pages! We have it straight from the Warner Music Rep that the tentative date is the 14th February (Terry is a buyer for a CD record store here in Sydney) but as before, this is "The Album" Cat Log Num 7567-83058-2 There are no plans to release a local copy of GE The Score (by Patrick Doyle), but as Jeremy has found out, most Importers can get it for you at various prices (subject to each Cd store) Hope this clears up the confusion :) RDT Maria and Terry PLANET TORI (On Holidays) http://www.geocities.com/~planettori - --------------------------------------------- She's a Beauty Queen, my sweet bean bag in the street Tori Amos... - ---------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 19:09:48 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: grey ears... Im on noones > side here and im just merely adding to the discussion. i guess what i don't understand here is *why* you would want to scream. i have just as much love for tori as the next ewf, but screaming is not how i want to show it. a much better way is to be respectful and quiet. this not only shows respect for tori, but for other audience members as well. when i see tori live, i *can't* scream. my emotions are so overwhelming that all i can do is stare and direct all my energy into listening. i don't want to miss a note when i see her, and it's impossible to hear everything with crazy little girls screaming. leah raisin girl, b.g. http://www.umr.edu/~lellis ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` KMNR 89.7fm radio business grrrl and dj "I have my own parties. It kinda sounds like SHE might be the one involved in the cult. Really, not to that radical degree, but I have parents that are somewhat like that too. If they knew the lyrics to 'God' or anything, they would forbid me to listen to her any more. Heh, if they knew that was one of the songs I like best on UtP, they really WOULD freak. Aside from that, though, I would like to thank Richard H. for posting yet ANOTHER extremely helpful and wonderfully informative message. I really needed the answer to that question myself, ever since it was brought up last time here on the list. I really didn't want to ask it, however, because mass chaos was already wreaking havoc with a lot of people having a bunch of questions with no answers. Well... just a bit from me. ==Peace== rAy ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #38 ************************************
