Whats all this shit about tori being too noiced? Do yall get off on saying that she is not well known and it would be different if she were too popular? I think a good dose of fame is just what Tori needs right now. I mean the songs that are popular now are unbeleibabl. So when the new album gets out, i hope the first or second or maybe even the third single sky rockets to number 1! Wouldnt it be fun to be actually noticed? Instead of kinda "living in hiding"? Well, thats just my opinion. Davey Petals of the blood roses ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 01:35:28 EST From: ChinaDust Subject: Re: Who is Tori Amos anyways ? Singing glory to a flag isn't what she's all about. Going back to Jewel, I'm guessing that the reason she was chosen to sing the anthem this year is because of the San Diego location. As SO many people know, Jewel used to live in a van (she's TOTALLY milked this for all it's worth) in San Diego. You have to admit, it is a perfect example of the "American Dream" - from living in a van to singing for millions of people, all in a matter of a few years...it's pretty amazing when you think about it. Adam ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 10:04:24 GMT0BST From: Ruthless Subject: Re: Cornflake Girl Hi everybody, I noticed some people discussing the lyrics to Cornflake Girl. I just wanted to say that Cornflake girl was written about Alice Walker's book Possessing the Secret of Joy. The book, is a heart breaking story about Tashi's life after she had been "circumcised". The pain endured not only during the actual "procedure" (often conducted with a dirty knife, stiched up with thorns and afterwards using spit to stop the bleeding) is oftentimes less than the pain during the journey back to one's self. As the recovery process afterwards includes the painful experience of sex. Oftentimes, if a woman had been infibulated it would require an opening up that could be done by a doctor but was more often done at home either manually with a knife or through the husband forcing penetration. Therefore, sex was often a painful experience as was menstruation and urinating. Which can explain a hesitation towards sex until the wound has been properly healed and opened. Alice Walker and Pratiba Parmar did a documentary on female genital mutilation entitled Warrior Marks which I highly recommend. Also, there is a book by the same name that details the filming process and both Pratiba and Alice's thoughts each step of the way. Be prepared to cry, scream and dance with rage. The bottomline though is that they were heightening awareness to a problem often overlooked- it's not my culture therefore not my problem...Alice has a beautiful quote in response- violence is not culture. Also, I think Tashi turns up again in blood roses in the line chickens get a taste of my meat girl...Chickens are often feed the parts taken from the woman but also before the procedure girls are forced to watch chickens getting their heads cut off- the message is simple, if you disobey this could be you. You should read the book the parts about Tashi and her re-occuring nightmares about chickens is harrowing. On a happy note, I gave Alice a copy of Cornflake Girl. Take care, Ruth I am human therefore nothing human can be alien to me.- Maya Angelou ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 13:59:48 +0000 (GMT) From: Brian the Lion Subject: Tori in the UK Hmm... I got a bit flamed for saying Marilyn Manson were crap so i guess i'll leave the good/bad thing to Tori. Just a couple of points...... 1)I read that when Tori first talked to Neil Gaiman they were listening to Ministry (please don't mail in about when exactly she 1st met him 'cos it doesn't matter in this case) so i figure she certainly has no problem with the style of bands such as MM and Korn (though whether the attitudes align is another thing) 2)Channel 4 (eg British TV) and HMV just ran a survey of the top 100 albums of all time and "Little Earthquakes was 95th. I know that doesn't sound as high as you and i would like but when considering the sheer quantity of music made that qualified for the pole (some albums were 30+ years old) it is a fantastic acheivement. Thought y'all might like to know 'cos i'm still on a buzz about it. B. Since sigs are getting popular i thought i'd choose one of my favourites:- "I was one of the sheep too, once. Lines like "I've shaved every place where you've been, boy" can mean (unpleasantly) the actual operation, or it can mean a more general exposure, perhaps of thoselittle secrets these situations force women to quell. Doughnut Song always seemed specifically about a woman having to have sex with a man under such strenuous and painful circumstances, at the same time being completely disrespected for it, but having no freedom to have a voice and express how she feels. Muhammad My Friend, I think, also deals with this in the "Muhammad my friend, getting very scared, teach me how to love, my brothers who don't know the law"If she is indeed talking about the Koran here, isn't there a passage that says the brothers of a woman have the right to do whatever necessary to the husband of their sister if they find out he has done something to abuse her? I have an Egyptian friend and she was telling me something like that.. of course with these sort of operations commonplace, that would not be included under abuse, and I think Tori's trying to point out it should be.
