I've heard it referred to >as a song aboput abortion >Funny...it was my belief that parts of "Father Lucifer" were about abortion? > *********** Well, I've read several quotes from Tori concerning Talula. >From what I've read, the song was about her break up with boyf Eric Rosse. >>> "I don't want to lose him, he must be worth losing if it is worth something..." I always figured it this way... Because its kind of a rule to lose things that are worth something to you. (kinda just like you never find something when you are looking for it, but when you're not, YOU find it.) Neways... I kinda thought that because she loved him, he was worth so much to her, it was just "habit" that she had to lose him. Tori talked about finding the "ideal women" inside of her and being able to dance freely after her loss. I guess its kinda of like her willingness/ability to recover. But even still I am kinda confused at the part starting with "and Jamaica..." So I am still kinda clueless. Your suggestions, comments, anything. Laura ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 09:52:08 +0000 (GMT) From: The Bursar Subject: SATY Hi people, I've never equated the song with abortion or sex or anything. I've always seen it (maybe due to the middle eight) as a song about Tori's religious/sexual repression all through her life until the era when she began to write the songs for Little Earthquakes and exorcise her 'demons'. "I got something to say but nothing comes.." She has a fire, a drive in her belly, but it won't come out.. "Sometimes I hear my voice and it's been here, silent all these years" An admission she has her inner voice but she packed it away years ago to deal with the rape, etc. "Years go by, will I still be waiting.." Self-explanatory really. Paul - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- | "Uh, aha, uh, let's go to Rixy's! http://www.dur.ac.uk/~d550du | Elysium! Rowing! Rugby! (At the sellout concert in Tampa, anyway.) She said she was in church and everyone was singing Away In A Manger except for her. And her father said, "Sing, Tori Ellen, we're supposed to sing along." And she said, "I *know* dad." And she goes on to say that she couldn't hear that song in her head, that it was "changing in her brain." Then she sings what she heard: "[wordless vocalizations] Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, Muhammad my friend, I said yes we both know, we both know it was a girl..." and starts into the song. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 10:45:05 EST From: Cindergirl Subject: mp3's The Tori Amos Music Corner... Did anyone ever think that someone could just write a song....Just To Confuse Everyone ???????? Like write it about something that no one could ever know what it was about for their own harmony ????...well maybe thats what Tori did... peace out ~ Dusk ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 11:43:33 -0500 From: Abbe J Cohen Subject: song interpretations I see a lot of themes in SATY that all sort of blend together and tell a story--the abusive relationship where someone else keeps telling you how terrible you are, makes it impossible for you to say anything or to be your own person, etc; the feeling that despite all that you can't deal with losing him and you want him to see that *you're* someone special (what if i'm a mermaid), not the other girl who thinks "really deep thoughts" or the ones whose name is on the jeans; beginning to come to the realization that you *can* find your own person and you do want to have the chance to be that person; and that now that all of this is happening to you he's gotten you pregnant (boy you best pray that i bleed real soon) and you wind up having an abortion (my scream got lost in a paper cup) and you're still left with all of these emotions, about the relationship tumbling apart, about the abortion, about the abuse, about wanting to be who you want to be... Talula to me also sounds like it's about the dilemma between having a child and not. (Not quite about abortion, the issue, but more about an individual person thinking about her own decision whether to have one). I see it in both the "i don't wan't to lose you; it must be worth losing if it is worth something" and also lines like "she said one and one was two but henry said it was three" - she doesn't want children, he does, so he had her put to death (but he did it right quickly the merciful man)... There's more, but i don't have the lyrics in front of me to add anything right now. I'm terrible at putting Tori's music into coherent words. I think she's already done it better than we can, and that it never tells a straightforward, coherent story, it's more like a jumble of thoughts that all come together beautifully and the feelings and emotions and themes come at you in little waves. But anyway, I tried, and there you have it... - -abbe ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jan 1998 11:41:31 -0500 (EST) From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: ~Cornflakes~ On Fri, 23 Jan 1998, FlutterVxn wrote: > okay i dont know and cant remember if this ever came up in precious convo > lately or before *but* does anyone know why the so called CD5 maxi single US > edition of cornflake girl has only 4 songs...cuz cd5's are supposed to have 5 > or so i thought. thanks and watermelons.... I haven't seen anyone reply to this yet . . . CD5s aren't called that because of the number of the songs on it, but because of the size of the CD itself. Remember when CDs first came out? Some singles were 3" across {I haven't seen one of those in a -long- time}. They used the name CD3 and CD5 to differentiate between the two. So all of Tori's US singles, with the exception of the Crucify and Hey Jupiter EPs {EP stands for 'extended play'}, are CD5s. :) /nad *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce. I never thought if it like that, but now I kind of do, I always thought that line was referring to King Henry and and he had a mistress, but his wife didn't want him to, so he put her to death and married his mistress, but that's just my way, and I think that also makes sence with what someone said how the song was about Eric Rosse, and then it also kind of goes along with Doughnut Song "You told me last night you were a sun now with your very own devoted satelite" meaning while he was with her he found some better and went with her, so the kind of go together, I guess... But Tori also said that each person has their own interpritation for every song and it means a certian thing to that person because that's what they *want* it to mean, and they need that song to mean that, and that like every song means something different to you and Tori, but Tori has it for her needs and you interpretate it to fit your needs. "My scream got lost in a paper cup I think there's a heaven where some screams have gone I've got 25 bucks and a cracker do you think it's enough to get us there?" Ok. We already know Tori's talking about a possible pregnancy because of the "Boy you best pray that I bleed real soon" line. So I would agree about the paper cup = pregnancy test. However, I think when she's talking about the heaven where her screams went, she's talking about wanting to go there, which is why she says what she says in the next line. Is $25 and a cracker (eucharist) enough to get her into heaven so she can get her screams back? And not be silent anymore? Ok, so it's just my opinion, but I like it. :) Beth - -- "People always say you should be yourself, like yourself is this definite thing, like a toaster, or something. Sadly, however, it is true. Beth Coulter , with impeccable taste and great kindness recently bestowed on me the title, King of the Grey Ears, a title I carry with full awareness of its awesome responsibility and the realization of my quickening mortality. Recently Beth wrote me, "And I have a request, dear King. Mikewhy is going to be 31 on Jan. 28. I think he should be made an honorary Greyears as a B-day present. Heck, he's officially *in* his 30's, old enough not to trust himself anymore (obscure Abby Hoffman reference), but only the King can grant such honorary status." Being King of the Grey Ears the Abby Hoffman reference is not at all obscure, "Never trust anyone over 30." Therefore, in complete agreement with Lady Beth, I, with the powers vested in my as King of the Grey Ears hereby dub Mr. Michael Whitehead, Webmaster of The Dent, Defender of Louisville, Worshipful Subject in the Church of Tori, and generally Wonderful Human Being, an member in good standing of the holy order of Grey Ears with full benefits thereof. This should be deemed to be a regular membership rather than an honorary one. I believe Michael has earned this position of respect to be accorded to one's elders. As the King it is also within my province to administer additional titles of royalty. Therefore, I would also like to take this opportunity on his day of birth to appoint Michael Grey Ears to be an honored Page in the Temple of Tori and recognize him as King of the Tori Amos Net Universe. My I humbly request that all loyal subjects in the Temple of Tori, all Grey Ears (both real and wannabes), and anyone else with vested interests, to please send birthday greetings to Michael Grey Ears on, or before, this Tuesday, January the 28th. What do you = > all think?=20 I always thought of it more metaphorically; Jesus, Muhammed, Buddha, all these "guys" seem to have the "monopoly" on holiness; Perhaps in it she means that the Magdalene was "the girl"; in _The Moon Under Her Feet_, a novel with historical references and citations, the theory is put forth that Magdalene is a title for the succession of sacred Priestesses (Hence Mary, as well as the preistess before her, were both referred to as "The Magdalene" by the followers of the Goddess, but of course referred to as "The whore of Babylon" by some others). Just one thought of many on the interpretation ; I tend to keep it pretty open in my own mind; perhaps that is more the intent, to open one's mind to the possibilities. Ok, what I meant was that we don't really know if all those legends are true; I do think his music is some of the better stuff surviving from that period. I think also that these legends tend to become larger than life; sure I'll agree he's musically brilliant, but so are many others. If fame had smiled on other musicians the same way, they might have these "larger than life" stories floating about as well. And it is still true that people use the "greats" to intimidate people from even trying; there were times when music was more communal and less a pompous show; idolizing anyone tends to lead away from an attitude that everyone should create and towards an attitude that only the phenomenally "gifted" deserve to create music; and we all know everyone starts somewhere. I recall the story of a 54-year-old who never played music who took up the cello and became a symphony player in a major symphony (I was a kid when I saw this so I don't have the details). I too find it amazing how she can bring out emotions in songs that didn't make as much an impression in their original forms; and also how she can do a take-off of a song and make it a very powerful statement (such as "Home on the Range"). I even like "ring my bell", which is a much- bemoaned song on this group, though 'tis not my favorite... The emotion on "case of you" is really intense. - -Richard. @ \@/ Richard A.
