God, I can't believe I forgot to send this to you guys like I promised! My review of the soundtrack was published in Sunday's edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, and can be found at: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=3D/chronicle/archive/1998/01= /18/PK48079.DTL LIVING UP TO =05XPECTATIONS'=20 4 stars=20 VARIOUS ARTISTS=20 =20 Great Expectations: The Album Atlantic, $17.99=20 A soundtrack featuring popular alternative groups, and including new music from Tori Amos, Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots and ex-Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell, may be the obvious choice for a modern-day movie version of Charles Dickens' `Great Expectations,'' due in theaters this month. And, despite a few incongruous head-scratchers, this collection may reach the top of the charts.=20 The CD opens with `Finn,'' taken from Patrick Doyle's film score and including a wordless vocal from Amos. She also contributes `Siren,'' co-written with Doyle. The track is full of tense rhythms, stormy piano riffs and Amos' haunting vocal harmonies.=20 Cornell's `Sunshower'' is his first new track since Soundgarden's demise. The ballad, in which his aching vocal is backed by simple acoustic guitar, is a marked break from his heavy grunge past.=20 Ex-Stone Temple Pilots singer Weiland delivers a whimsical waltz in `Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down.'' The song opens with a music-box melody, then swirls with lush strings and a crisp snare drum. Weiland's pairing of alternative rock with classical waltz echoes the idea behind the film - -- a marriage of the old with the new.=20 =20 `Life in Mono'' from the electronic group Mono continues the theme of old and new with its lushly synthesized ballad. Breathy female vocals bring its starry-eyed lyrics to life in an unexpected treat.=20 Some of the album's better- known contributors don't fare as well. Pulp's `Like a Friend'' and Reef's `Resignation'' are negligible tunes, and the Verve Pipe's `Her Ornament'' is almost as lackluster. Iggy Pop's edgy, low-fi `Success,'' a decent track in its own right, is out of place in this collection.=20 The album closes with a pair of opposites: a studio version of the Grateful Dead's `Uncle John's Band'' and Cesaria Evora's sultry Latin `Besame Mucho,'' a perfect nightcap for this menagerie of romantic tunes.=20 - -- Beth Winegarner=20 - --=20 "People always say you should be yourself, like yourself is this definite= =20 thing, like a toaster, or something. Like you can know what it is, even. = =20 But every so often, I'll have like -- a moment, where being myself, and my= =20 life right where I am is, like, enough." Hi all, > well ive taken a couple of classes on classical composers, ect. and from > what ive read mozart was musically brilliant but lifewise we was a bit > of an irresponsible idiot, and if i remember correctly not very many > people liked him once he grew up....correct me if im wrong...i mean Just wanted to say a few words about this whole 'is Tori Mozart reincarnated?' thing. In my view (and I strongly believe in reincarnation), before we incarnated into this present life (and before all previous ones too) we decided what lessons we wanted to learn in order to help our spiritual progression, and then chose the family and place we were born into on that basis. Now I know that Tori and Mozart are both musical geniuses, and can compose entire pieces without writing it all down etc, but I don't really think that on that basis you can say that she is the reincarnation of him, simply because of those similarities. It could be that when Mozart reincarnated into subsequent lives he had nothing to do with music altogether. But on the other hand, as you said, he was meant to have been a bit of an idiot and no one liked him, and he eneded up dying in poverty. So maybe he decided that he would again incarnate as a famous musician, but this time he'd try to do more to help others, rather than being as self-centred as he was before - which is what Tori has done through her music, as well as through setting up RAINN and things like that, and now millions of people love her. I don't know if she is the reincarnation of Mozart or not, but it's interesting to speculate. What does everyone else think? (tori calendar) Grrrr! About two weeks before Christmas, I order two copies of the Tori Amos 1998 Calendar from CD Now. I hadn't heard anything bad about them, so I assumed they would be reliable... Days went by, I sent them my check, they sent me a brief email reply that they had received payment from me...then nothing...the check was cashed...I got an email confirming my order...the month of January went by. Today, in my email box was a VERY brief message stating that they no longer carry the calendar in their store and my order has been canceled. GRRR. No message about what happened to the money I sent them, no "we will give you a prompt refund" or "please select something else from our stock"...I took a look at their customer service page, and saw nothing about what to do if an order is canceled. I'm going to give them phone call later on today. *plea*beg*ask* Does any kind soul out there in EarsWithFeet land have an extra copy of this calendar floating around that I could purchase? Or does anyone know of another business, web or otherwise, where I can purchase this calendar? Email me privately at ramoth@sonic.net so this won't clog up the list. *hugs* and *faerie dust* DragonGrrl ******************************************************************************* Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty is never old. -Franz Kafka ******************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 16:14:46 -0500 From: Tripp Gwyn Subject: Hungarian Wedding Song I've searched the web for Hungarian Wedding song, but no one seems to have them. He said that he hated her and that she was a real "prick" to him one night when he went to her concert. He said that he held out his hand to shake hers, and she snapped at him and said something like, "who do you think you are that you can shake my hand, honey?" I have never met Tori personally, so I couldn't dispute any of his claims, but I have heard from many people on the list that she is really easy-going and extremely nice. What I want to know is, have any of you experienced such an incident with Tori? I don't want to believe this guy, but he seemed really convincing. ******** - -L- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 17:28:00 -0500 From: Tripp Gwyn Subject: Re: Hungarian Wedding Song Sorry guys, I was talking about the LYRICS to Hungarian Wedding Song.
