Actually, people like Mozart and Bach tend to be over-rated, IMO. Why pick on certain people and say they're the greatest, and lord it over others by saying, "well, s/he's no Mozart". ;-) Alicia writes: > Subject: Re: yup yup yup > > Alanis was influenced by Tori, btw. This is so cool that Alanis was inspired by LE. I think that Alanis must have also been inspired by the spiritual elements of Tori's music. Though I don't think there really can be a one "original" artist in the female musician's movement... I remember Patti Smith turned a few heads, and also had almost shamanistic outpourings (albeit a bit obscene at times), like our dear Tori. Go back further and then you have the great blues singers.... and then there's the whole history of Europe where women as musicians were scorned and called "evil" (read "Women & Music" by Sophie Drinker), and then we go back further and many great musicians and songwriters were female, writing hymns to the goddess Inanna in ancient Sumeria. =8^) Jessie L Ksanznak writes: > Subject: Re: yup yup yup > > Music is her soul. Sure, I can think of a few songs I'd like to hear her do, but I'm wondering something here. First of all, (and I know most people would agree here) I'd much rather hear her do her own material than do a cover. No matter what cover. But secondly, and more importantly, I'm wondering what it is about Tori's covers which we love so much? I mean she's done fantastic versions of Landslide and Lovesong and Summertime and Losing my Religion and Teen Spirit and Case of you and on and on... But they're not original material, so why do we love it when she does 'em? It's not that she does 'em better than the originals do, although some might prefer her versions. Is it that she likes the same songs we do? Is it that we want to hear our favorite songs all done by our favorite artist? So I'm just asking you guys what you think: why do you want her to cover XXX song so much? It's not that she does 'em better {that's a case for debate, and something which would rapidly turn into "but sucks"}, but that she makes them her own. Look at the covers she's done. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is an obvious choice -- that bears very little resemblance to the original, musically. When Tori covers a song, she changes it, she crafts it into something uniquely Tori. Anyone can take a song and turn out the same thing that the original artist did, but it takes true talent to take someone else's song and make it your own. Tori has done this over and over, and it still amazes me to hear her do it again. > Is it that she likes > the same songs we do? Is it that we want to hear our favorite songs all done > by our favorite artist? I dunno. Some of my favorite Tori covers are by artists that I wouldn't normally listen to. I'm not a Nirvana fan, nor an Led Zep fan, nor a Stones fan; and yet her takes on SLTS, Thank You, and Angie are amongst my favorite songs to hear her sing. There are certain songs out there by artists that I do like that I would be very interested to hear her do {because she does it her own way}. > So I'm just asking you guys what you think: why do you want her to cover XXX > song so much? I think part of the discussion stems just from the sheer number of covers that Tori has done thus far. She makes regular use of other artists material in concert. How many concerts went by on the last tour where Tori -didn't- cover something? She apparently likes the covers she's done, and she plays them quite often for us, and it's probably safe to assume that she's going to continue to cover songs. Each tour has brought us more covers, and assuming the trend continues, folks are just voicing their opinions on songs that we'd like her to do. Hell, people have -asked- her to cover songs in the past {IE "Killing Me Softly" and "Live to Tell"} and had those requests fulfilled. Maybe Tori enjoys the challenge of covering someone else's material. I dunno. {And dammit, this thread is infinitely better than " sucks" or whatever. ;) } /nad *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce.
