By CRITICS!!! I think Tori has grown strong enough to take it and stay true to herself, but it has to hurt. I think critics have trouble these days telling the difference between healthy critique and insult. Remember the reviews Tori's had? The really hurtful (at least, to me) ones? It sounds more like critics with no life who are just trying to play around with the heads of people. Why should this >be any different? well, because mike curry and i set precious-things up to be a *tori amos* mailing list, not a mailing list for anything anybody wants to talk about. these past couple weeks, i have been either out-of-town or too busy with year-end sorts of things to pay close attention to the list and its meandering. i'm still not completely caught up, but i must say that i'm thrilled that so many people have joined and that they are participating...but i'm a little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of traffic that has been generated by you guys. i'm sure that this applies doubly for many more people (the number of people who are switching over to the digest attest to this). so, i thought i'd just mention a few things which you can do to keep precious-things vital, but useful. none of these are laws or rules -- just some common sense from experience being part of and managing mailing lists for quite a few years. first, i'm not going to remind everyone what the guidelines for posting to precius-things are. they were sent to you when you subscribed. if you no longer have that message, you can remind yourself what's on-topic and what's off-topic by looking at the precious-things web page: . if you don't have access to the web, send a note to majordomo@smoe.org which says "info precious-things" in the message body and the same stuff will be sent to your mailbox. 1) think before you post. if you are replying to a question, look to see if someone else has already provided an answer. if no one has, do you know that you have the correct answer? wrong information can often be more useless than no information. research what you are saying if it is factual information. 2) don't post trivial or personal messages. is what you are posting of interest to only one person? if so, make sure you send it only to that person, not the entire list. generally, we do not need to know. does what you say progress the discussion? are you just saying "me too" or "yeah, i agree with that"? instead of just reaffirming someone else, say *why* you agree -- build on the discussion! we really are interested in what you feel and think about things -- not just whether you agree or disagree. 3) don't post for the sake of posting. believe it or not, *no* traffic is better than idle chatter. especially if one is on a million other mailing lists (i.e., *me*! ;) ). 4) don't over-quote or use a huge sig or use html mail. all three of the above put an extra load on the mail server by increasing the size of your message. last time i checked there we were approaching 400 or so subscribers to precious-things. remember too that smoe.org hosts a number of other mailing lists. i don't know the exact amount of mail traffic we push through everyday, but it's *a lot*. since smaller messages mean less drain on the system and quicker service, please take the time to: a) edit out any unnecessary quoting of message in your replies b) keep your .signatures to a reasonable length (4-6 lines is okay, 20 is not) c) if you use microsoft outlook or some other html-enabled mailer, turn off the html features (for help on this, take a look at and . (the same goes for winmail.dat files from ie3 mail, vcards from netscape 4 and rich text format.) if you have any questions or need help, please drop me a line. if you want to take issue with any of the above, feel free to send a note to /dev/null. like i said, the above are suggestions and advice, but i think heeding them can go a long way to help keep precious-things a happy *and* useful place. thanks, woj co-listguy (good cop) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 21:49:35 -0500 From: Richard Caldwell Subject: Tori's Club Tour Starts April 18th Tori Starts US Club Tour April 18th Tori will launch a tour of select US club venues on April 18th of this year. Tori will perform with a band for the first time in her solo career in venues that will be specifically selected to be not too big, but not too small. Tori wants this tour to be fan-driven and has requested that tickets be sold only through the box office at the venue. An Internet Simulcast is being considered for one or more dates. This US club tour is expected to start April 18th and close May 6th. Some sources have said that Tori will then play Europe starting in late May and through June, but we have not confirmation of this. Did anyone else think this > or have I lost it completely?? Are those the only two options? Are they mutually exclusive? :-) No, you make perfect sense with that. I tend to be more comfortable leaving most such things open-ended, though. Why tie one's head down to one way of thinking about most of Tori's lyrical imagery? Most people I've heard speak about the reference to "Ed is watching" in Marianne seem absolutely convinced that Tori was referring to her dad, Dr. Edison Amos. I find that I'm more comfortable with not telling myself that such things have one and only one very specific, worldly meaning. I find it to be more wonderful when not attaching narrow meanings to such imagery. And with songs that just poured out of Tori such as Marianne, Not the Red Baron, etc., they seem to contain more images from deep within her than the more worked-out ones--and are thus more likely to not have fixed pre-concepts attached to them. This is one reason I think her songs really do have their own lives, and continue to live, breathe, and grow, nearly on their own. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G.
