I couldn't listen to it for te longest time because it said things that really hurt me and my belief. It seemed very blasphemous. I have now learned to take it as a person expressing feelings that everyone goes through. Tori and I have just come to different conclusions and I can respect that. But musically it is excellent. A song that I don't particularily like musically is Professionsal Widow. I just don't care for it as much as her other stuff. Hi, All! (I sent this in two hours ago and it didn't show up, so I'm trying again.) Great News! ToriNews has returned at last! If someone else posted this to Precious Things already it didn't reach me yet, so you'll understand, but for now--Woo-Hoo! Tori-News is back! CAREFULLY read the rules of ToriNews (below) and decide to agree to them before deciding to subscribe. It's only for--guess what--news about Tori. It's NOT a list for discussion. But as a news list it's an excellent tool, and I'm thrilled to have it back. Many thanks to John Stewart for hanging in there, and to the SMOE folks for housing the list. The info below is the welcome message you'll get when you subscribe. You are not subscribed to the list by virtue of having gotten this meesage from me! :-) (Sorry, I can't contain my excitement.) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ___________________________________________________________________ Welcome to the torinews mailing list! Please save this message for future reference. Thank you. This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need to contact a human. [Last updated on: Mon Jan 12 1:04:03 1998] Greetings and welcome back to ToriNews! It's been a while, eh? Subscription info for ToriNews, a Tori Amos mailing list, last updated 11 January 1998 **Welcome new subscriber!!** Contents: 1. Welcome 2. Subscriptions *ONLY* [no charge of course ] 3a. List purpose [IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!] 3b. What to do if you have a problem 3c. What happens when you post 4. Explanation of other Tori lists 5. No digests 6. No archives 7. Important legal stuff 8. Questions, comments, etc. 1. Welcome Welcome to the Tori Amos *news* mailing list, ToriNews [thanks to Steve, ombo@aol.com, for the name] We started operating on 22 January 1996...and took a rather long hiatus for several months [smile] while yours truly went through the "let's remodel a house!" phase of his life. Fortunately this insane project is nearly done, which will give me back parts of my life, including this one :) Many thanks to the fine folk at smoe.org for hosting this list after it lost its original home at Chihuly Studio. Without them, many, many musicians' mailing lists would not exist. As of 13 July 1997 we had 487 subscribers, from twenty-two countries, four continents, and a whole lot of time zones :) As of this writing that has changed dramatically...please be patient as we get the subscriber list back in shape again. At least you won't be getting the bounce messages now :-) PLEASE SAVE THIS SUBSCRIPTION INFO!! That way, if you want to sub or unsub or want to look up info, you can do so without asking me directly. Thank you for your cooperation :) 2. Subscription Information This list is limited to subscribers only. If you try to post to the mailing list address, torinews@smoe.org, and you are not subscribed, your message will be bounced. So make sure you subscribe *before* you try to post :) If you want to be able to post from more than one address, you will need to subscribe from each of those addresses. Please contact me at stewartj@seanet.com if you have difficulties. *TO SUBSCRIBE*, please e-mail torinews-request@smoe.org with a message body of subscribe. Majordomo will send you a confirmation request, please respond to it promptly, and then you're in! *TO UNSUBSCRIBE*, please e-mail torinews-request@smoe.org with a message body of unsubscribe. Again, Majordomo should send you a confirmation request, please respond promptly, and then you're gone :( *TO POST*, please e-mail torinews@smoe.org and write to your heart's content :) (See #3) 3a. List Purpose The purpose of the list is to disseminate information about Tori Amos...concerts, live appearances, TV/radio gigs, press/articles/etc. Or if you're trying to find someone with tickets to a particular show, or someone who taped something, or have Tori-related rarities to sell or trade, use it for that as well. PLEASE DO *NOT* use this list for discussions of what Tori's music means to you, etc. There is already a mailing list for that (Really Deep Thoughts Right Now) and I'm not trying to compete with that list, which does a great job at what it does best. There is another list, Precious-Things, which also deals with general Tori chatter. I understand that there are different interpretations of "news" about Tori, and I will try to be as understanding as possible. However, *please* respect the intended nature of this list. If you do not, you will be unsubscribed. If you have a question about something you think you want to post, *please* ask me first. Many of our subscribers pay for their e-mail, and are on this list precisely because it doesn't have the chatter that some other Tori lists do. They are also very sensitive to posts here being *news*. Oh yeah...and if you're posting about something related to a particular geographic area, *please* mention the location in your subject line. That way, if you're in New York, people in Australia can just delete your post without reading it if it's about tickets for a NYC show. Think of it as a "netiquette" thing. 3b. If You Have Problems Please let me know! I like to know about bounced mail, delivery problems, etc. If you are having a bad hair day or flunked a big exam or didn't get a raise, I'll listen, too :) If for any reason you get errors while trying to post, please forward them to me, stewartj@seanet.com. This should not be happening now that we will be running under Majordomo. If you have a problem with something that happens on this list, *please* e-mail me directly, stewartj@seanet.com, rather than mailing the list. I know tempers can flare very quickly, but in the long term it's easier to let me deal with things than to drag out discussions on the list itself. "Old-timers" here will tell you I usually get problems addressed quite quickly. I would really appreciate it if you can follow this policy. 3c. What Happens When You Post If you get messages that someone did *not* receive your message, please forward them to me so I can investigate them. That makes the whole process a lot smoother, and me very grateful :) 4. Explanation of other Tori Lists As mentioned above, there are other mailing lists related to Tori. Really Deep Thoughts Right Now (RDT(RN)), a more-or-less no-holds-barred discussion of all things Tori, is one; Precious-Things, a list designed to cut out some of the chatter of RDT, is another; and a third, Tori-Boot, is dedicated to fans looking for recordings of Tori's many performances. *Please* avoid cross-posting the exact same message to all these mailing lists; at the very least, think about what you're trying to accomplish before doing so. A lot of people are members of more than one list, and threads tend to develop across the lists that really don't accomplish much. Your cooperation is deeply appreciated by *all* the list owner folks. NOTE: An easy way to get signed up to these lists is to point your Web browser to http://members.aol.com/jlitges/toria.htm [Thanks Joerg!] For more information about RDT: E-mail violet@slip.net, and she'll take care of you [waves to Violet] For more information about Precious Things, please contact (For the bounce list): precious-things-request@smoe.org, with the word 'subscribe' in the body of the text. OR For the digest: precious-things-digest-request@smoe.org, with the word 'suscribe' in the body of the text. For more info on Tori-Boot: To subscribe to tori-boot: Send e-mail to majordomo@world.std.com The body of your message should read EXACTLY LIKE THIS: subscribe tori-boot To unsubscribe to tori-boot: Send e-mail to majordomo@world.std.com The body of your message should read EXACTLY LIKE THIS: unsubscribe tori-boot To make postings to the mailing list: Send e-mail to tori-boot@world.std.com 5. No Digests The purpose of ToriNews is to disseminate, in a *very* timely fashion, information about upcoming Tori events and items. A digest-based list is great for intellectual discussions, but not so good for quick updates. Because of this, this list will *not* have a digest mode. Please do not ask to be put on digest mode...it's not possible and wouldn't make sense. Think of this list as a "bounce" list...as messages are posted, they will be distributed. No manual intervention on my part...once you're subscribed, you're in until you unsubscribe...or you are unsubscribed, God forbid. [I've only had to do that twice.] 6. No Archives Due to the timely nature of this list, there's no way to archive this list. That shouldn't matter, as RDT digests are stored by some members of that list, and there are several Web sites related to Tori as well. Greg Burrell has an excellent one at http://www.webville.com/~tori 7. Important legal stuff The opinions sent to this Tori Amos mailing list are not necessarily those of the list operator, his employer, or his ISPs; nor do they necessarily represent the mailing list members or those who post here. Questions, Comments, etc. Send 'em to me direct, stewartj@seanet.com, and I'll be happy to reply when I have time. Please feel free to spread the word about this list! Okay on Del, Neil created her before he even met tori. She was based on a friend of his, her name has just totally slipped my mind. You can tell a HUGE difference in Del of before Neil met Tori and afterwards. She makes one small appearance for a family meeting and is introduced, with a hint of her background. She looks a lot different, skinnier, her lips aren't that spectactular, and she looks as if she's a bit in the rough. The next time she's seen is when she's the main character, and wa la, within the first 8 or so pages we've got the lyrics from 'Tear in Your Hand' going on in the background. She's quite a bit more tori-ish, but at the same time, she's still got a lot of orginality. It's cute the way they kinda quote eachother sometimes. as in in the last issue of her story she babbling under a cherry tree saying "Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor.... Twinkle's a nifty word." A frame from that same issue is in "All These Years." Okay, anything else? oh yeah, I never connected this but she has a dog named Barnaby, a German Shepard, same as the ill fated Scrumpy. I was tooling around in Barnes & Noble this weekend, and when you walk into the store, there's a section called "New Fiction" and I was drawn to a book with Tori's face on the cover. It was Greg Kihn's "Into the Pale" (if I'm remembering correctly). I'm not sure if this is the same Greg Kihn as in "The Greg Kihn Band" (you remember the song, "Our Love's in Jeopardy"), but this Greg Kihn has had a previous work of fiction published. So maybe it's a different guy. Anyway, it's a picture of Tori I've seen before, but they don't give her credit anywhere in the book. Instead they have a cover art credit and it's some guy's name (maybe the photographer), but it does not mention Tori at all. I have a question and some replies to other stuff. First, has Tori ever cited Lou Reed and/or Velvet Underground as an influence? I know they've influenced a lot of musicians, and these lyrics remind me kind of hers, particularly of "Mother": "And kingdom's Christian soldiers dear for you/And melting icecap mountain tops for you/And knights in flaming silver robes for you" And they also have a song called "I'll Be Your Mirror" and in the YKTR notes she thanks Eric for mirrors...thoughts, anyone? On that quote issue, I think it's what somebody said her boyfriend said. LIke why should she have to play music a certain way because some maggot-eaten European said so in the 18th century. My least favorite? Well, In the Springtime of His Voodoo sometimes annoys me, as does The Waitress. I just have to be in the right mood for those two. I don't horribly dislike any of her songs. I see where the people who said Me and a Gun came from though, it's just not the kind of song you turn up really loud in your car and sing along to, which doesn't mean it's bad, but it just makes you feel so much. Which is why I don't listen to my favorites much, because I know I'll cry and be all girly over them. :) I think that's it, I don't remember what else...oh yeah, on the pig issue (note my address!) I heard Tori got a pig named Bean but haven't heard anything else about him or if he's the BfP pig. Anyone? Richard? :) That should be the mandatory signature on this list. Love, Sam Most people don't realize that the snowshoe has many uses. For one, it can be used to carry pancakes from the stove to the breakfast table. Also, it can be used to carry uneaten pancakes from the table to the garbage. Finally, it can be used as a kind of strainer to push pancakes through to see if a piece of gold just happened to get into a pancake. - -Jack Handy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 15:40:10 PST From: "Hanna Paulus" Subject: Least fav. Tori song Well as I said before it was worker, but with that skipping your least favorite track, thats really not how it is for me, I skip songs I don't feel like listening to at the moment, like sometimes I'll be dieing to listen to Talula, but other times, I may want to skip that and go right to Not the Red Baron, it just depends what mood I'm in, but it doesn't mean that I like Talula better then Not the Red Baron or vice versa. ~Hanna~ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 15:21:17 -0800 From: rain Subject: tori quote this quote was referring to old composers. tori didnt want to play all these dead guys music she wanted to play something new. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~rain~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > << precious-things@smoe.org > > <<"Who said that?
