[jlovoi@sps.edu (Space Dog)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 3 Jan 1998 00:02:06 -0800 From: Beth Winegarner Subject: Oh my Firstly, I'd like to say that I got my issue #3 of "Stardust" today and came immediately home to read it.... And it has the Tori tree in it! I'm going to be nice and scan the artwork for Mikewhy to put up on the Dent, but basically the sTori is, she's a tree who helps the main character figure some stuff out towards his quest, and gives him a leaf which will help him later on (probably in the fourth and final installment). It's a beech tree with copper leaves -- of course -- and since it's a talking tree, it's living in the realm of faerie. There's a really gorgeous painting of it (all the art was done by Charles Vess), with the tree growing out of a tiny island in a pool which, at night, is twinkling with starlight. She (the tree) says a few Tori-esque things, including: "And it made me feel all warm and squishy inside, from the tips of my leaves to the ends of my roots." The tree in question is actually someone who was transformed into a tree by a kind of spell or curse. She used to be a wood nymph. "'I was pretty cute as a nymph, too,' she admitted coyly." But my favorite bit relating to the tree has to be this one: "'I didn't always used to be a tree,' said the voice in the rustling of the copper beech leaves. 'A magician made me a tree.'" It isn't giving much away to tell you all these things. However, I'd advise you all to start reading from issue #1 if possible. Don't just get #3 'cause it's got Tori in it... it's not going to make much sense if you pick it up in the middle. :) - --------- In the meantime, something odd is happening to me -- I'm really getting into Kate Bush. I mentioned her before, in my comparisons of lily to CaLS... but I've been listening to Hounds of Love a lot and I'm really really getting into it -- like obsessively. I've heard it so many times before over the years, and sometimes I loved it, and sometimes I could not STAND it. Now I'm trying to figure out where to go from here in terms of what to get. I want my own copy of the Red Shoes, and probably Sensual World, and then go into the more difficult stuff, but I'm not sure... *fret* I'd really like her box set but it's way-way-way out of print! - -------- Richard: you live 3 blocks from a Muzak business and you haven't burned the place down yet?? :) Actually, I heard a Muzak version of Jewel's "You Were Meant for Me" the other day at the mall where I work. I was pretty disgusted. On a not-totally-unrelated note, I saw Jewel (and Jackson Browne, Roger Daltrey, Nathan Lane, Ronnie Spector, Debra Winger and Natalie Cole) in a 1995 production of "The Wizard of Oz." Jewel of course played Dorothy, and did a really good job of it, I might add. She's a decent actress as well as a heck of a singer, although her version of "Somewhere over the rainbow" was much more ... dramatic .. than Tori's version. Less subtle. But much of this show was done in a kind of swingy, jazzy style, so Jewel was really belting out the tunes for the most part. Hearing Jackson Browne singing "If I Only Had a Brain" (or Daltrey's "If I only had a heart" or Lane's portrayal of the cowardly lion...) was so sweet. :) I saw at the end that the soundtrack is available through Rhino records. I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before... but hey, if you see this show (it was on VH1 tonight), it's worth checking out. And speaking of checking out... Tori says, "The silver earrings are from a jewelery maker by the name of Jacqueline Rabin. She is an African-American living in London, and she is very talked about. You can find her work in a place off Carnaby street called Jess James. Great jewelry store. all the pieces are in aquariums. without the water." (That was from a Q&A session in the fall of 1996.) She also said (somewhere, though for the life of me I can't find where -- but I'm pretty sure it was in a spoken interview) that she takes them back to Jacqueline from time to time for touch-ups and repairs and has taken to wearing ONLY those earrings simply because they make her feel good. There was just something about them that felt magical and special and strengthening, and she feels wonderful having them on. [I'm paraphrasing here.] A note about the repairs: if you look at the earrings closely now, you can see signs of them having been pounded back into shape a little too often. They keep spreading out and getting slightly larger each time, and they have more and more dents from the flattening tools. Now, I'm not expert on each town you guys live in. :) But "Stardust," as most of Neil Gaiman's work, is a graphic novel, meaning you'll find it wherever comic books are sold. Well, I don't know if they'll have them at every comic shop, but many of the larger ones should be carrying Neil's stuff. BTW, there is a "Stardust" T-shirt which can be ordered/had, but it doesn't have the tree on it. (She's not that big of a character). It's still a nice shirt. Thumbing through the pages of the latest issue of "Q" magazine (I don't know what number it is), they were revealing the results of a poll they had conducted on the 100 best albums of all time. "Little Earthquakes" came in at No.66. They had a little piece on each of the albums, complete with a picture. If I remember correctly, the capture under Tori's picture was "Tori Amos. Never knowingly over-dressed". (which seemed a tad unkind) then there was a piece about the album, and a comment on which the "magic moment" of the album was. (As you may have guessed, I didn't have enough money with me to buy it - so I'm just telling you what I remember). I think the 100 best albums thing was the front cover. I don't know about the necklace but Tori said in a radio interview in 1996 in answer to the same question that the earrings were made by this great little old lady with a small shop in London. Hey! You know what? I haven't posted for like a year. But I just realized all you guys are really funny, so I had to post and add some of my funny. If you don't find me funny, that's OK. I think I'm hillarious. Anyway, I just bought Tori Amos Collectibles (a book of EVERYTHING ever released by Tori or anything about her--everything) and, frankly, I find the whole idea of so many different versions of the same thing re-released over and over and with slightly different colouring on the pictures very amusing and shameless. Now, don't jump all over me, but does anyone actually fall for this and spend all their hard-earned cashola on the same single released in different countries or, a better example, a single which contains nothing not released on any other single or album??? I hope you follow, 'cause I just realized that last sentance was quite confusing. I obviously have enough motivation to comment on it rather than fix it. But I hope I'm not the only one who noticed this. OH, yeah, I just got into Tori a year ago, but I still consider myself a hardcore Toriphile. Go ahead--ask me anything. Well, I don't want to invite an argument, but I think I could defend myself--or at least save vital organs. I don't own any bootlegs. Well, I own many COPIES of bootlegs, but no actual CD's. I read how Tori really dislikes the whole bootleg thing--not recording concerts, but selling them for profit which she never recieves--and I'm very proud to have never contributed to such an atrocity. But do any of you think I'm being silly or wierd? I also don't own any singles, but I have the B-Sides and the equivalent to the Talula UK single where Amazing Grace/'Til the Chicken are not included on the B-Sides compilation. Oh, yeah, is there anything else not included that I may be missing? But I really want to own a bootleg, but don't want to upset Tori because I know I'll be having tea with her one day and happen to mention that I have bootlegs then she'll throw one of her wierd shoes at me and storm out of the bistro. I really want some bootleg videos. Does anyone have anything? I'm looking for concerts. I've got a bunch of TV appearances and all the videos (except some BfP--I've got Caught A Lite Sneeze and that's it!!! i know there's a Hey Jupiter and something else out there, so if anyone can hook me up...) but I want a concert!!! You know, I'm kinda depressed. I thought I was hot stuff with all my bootlegs, but after reading Tori Collectibles and seeing how many there are, I am shamed. I want more, more, MORE. OK, enough ranting and raving. But one last thing: What is the difference between the Tornado and the LP Talula's??? I bought BfP used and I just listened to the Tornado tonite and realized "Hey! What gives? Where's the difference?" and I think I may have purchased one of those first 800,000 copies of BfP. If so, I feel very privleged. Like I own a test print!!! That'd be tr=E9s cool. OK, gonna go. Oh, yeah, I used that subject line to catch your attention. hope it worked, and I hope no hard feelings about my rambling.
