If people want to hear Cornflake Girl, why would that >bother you?? That is one of my favorite songs b/c I can relate to it very You've missed my point. The song wasn't the problem - I love Cornflake Girl too - but you know *more than one song* when you go to the concert. You don't go for *one* song. I saw this at Jewel recently when she played here, and all anyone wanted to hear was You Were Meant For Me - and they were then downright rude during all the other songs (because they didn't know them). What I was really saying was that people should get to know an artist's music before going to a concert. The Cornflake Girl thing was just an example - it seems to annoy Tori (because you often hear her say "Aaargh!" or "Later! Later!" on bootlegs) when people keep shouting for it at concerts. (In fact, I think you can hear it on the Hey Jupiter EP somewhere?) >well. I have been listening to her for six years but I don't think I'm better >than anyone else. Yes I know about the whole poser thing b/c I deal with ppl Ditto. There are hundreds or thousands of people who have more Tori stuff and know more about Tori than me. However, I *do* feel I'm slightly better than those people who jump on the bandwagon on the crest of one song, then as soon as it's gone, they're gone with it - but during the time of that song's release, they claim they know *everything* there is to know about an artist. >like that all the time. I think it's annoying, but if someone really wants to >ask a question about something, why should they not ask??? I've asked many No! People with a genuine interest in the artist are *not* a problem. People who have *no* interest in the artist and go to a concert to hear one song, and then spend the rest of the time ruining it for everyone else are the problem. >questions about various artists b/c I want to find out the answer. Just b/c >people don't share your whole insight on what Tori Amos and her music means >does not make them any lower. That wasn't what I was saying. It's absolutely, breathtakingly beautiful. It's only $19.95 plus shipping and handling which goes for a truly wonderful cause; the support of RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. It can be ordered through Mike Whitehead's wonderfully complete Tori Amos site at http://www.aye.net/~mikewhy/toriamos.html RAINN's business office phone number is 202/544-1034 and their e-mail address is RAINNmail@aol.com. Just in case anyone reading this doesn't know about RAINN it was a project Tori started to get help to victims of rape and abuse. In their own words, RAINN is a non-profit organization in Washington, DC. In cooperation with more than 600 rape crisis centers around the country, RAINN operates a free, 24-hour hotline for survivors of sexual assault. Since its founding in July, 1994, the RAINN hotline (1-800-656-HOPE) has already helped more than 108,000 survivors. Please help. They are still in need of funds. Buying the poster, with Tori's signature imprinted in it, gives you a great piece of art and helps support a very worthy cause. Wishing you all the best year of your lives in 1998. This thread bespeaks one of my main problems with internet mailing lists. Someone says something perfectly rational, such as the above thought, and it gets misconstrued by people who hear something else entirely, and then a big discussion ensues with a bunch of other people reacting negatively to something that no one ever said to begin with. It happens constantly, and it's an enormous waste of time. > What I was really saying was that people should get to know an artist's > music before going to a concert. *This*, however, is something to which I must respond. Someone who I have come to consider a good friend was a freelance music writer until recently. On a given evening in 1994, she had a chance to review one of two concerts: One was Tori Amos, and the other was Barry Manilow. She didn't know Tori's music from a hole in the wall--other than the Cornflake Girl single. Nonetheless, she chose to go to the Tori concert. It *completely* changed her life. Not only has she become one of the most Tori-knowledgeable people I ever came in contact with, but she started saving up for the next tour so she could go see a lot of shows. She dragged her butt to 32 shows on the DDI tour last year. She spoke to Tori only one time, because she was such a shy person, and didn't feel she had anything to say to Tori. I was going to introduce them in Boulder because I knew Tori would be deeply moved to speak with such a dedicated person, but it turned out I didn't need to. Tori ended up going over to her and speaking with her due to what was basically a fluke. My friend used to be so shy that she didn't even like to go to the bank by herself. After Tori spoke with her in Boulder, though, she has a lot more self-confidence, and it was like she had a new start in life--and she's taken advantage of it. So, yeah, if someone is going only to hear one song, basic manners dictate that they not ruin the rest of the concert for everyone else. But I can't even begin to support the idea that someone has some kind of a responsibility to learn anything about Tori's music before seeing her in concert other than how to act once they're there. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Dec 1997 13:09:05 PST From: "Hanna Paulus" Subject: jumping on the bandwagon I agree with what Richard said how people don't have to be fully orienatated with a persons music when they go to see a show. As long as they don't ruin the show for people around them there's nothing wrong with doing so. As he said it will often change a persons life and create a new sence of life, especially with a musical artist like Tori Amos, I can see how her music could change someones life. Because even people who don't care for Tori's music off the CD may find a new likeness for it after they see her show, many people just go to shows because they're curious about them and want to see if the performer is as good\bad as everyone said he\she\they was\were. Oh another message- the YKTR massage I sent was meant to go to RDT (right now) mailing list instead of this one...sorry and bye. ~Hanna~ "I walked into your dream and now I've forgotten how to dream my own dream..."-TA, Mother ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V2 #370 *************************************
