David Letterman's fetish for saying AY-mose notwithstanding, hearing Tori pronounce it on at least one radio interview as AY-miss sealed it for *me*. Some dear friends and intense Tori Folk seem to get off by always saying AY-mose, and I can't say that Tori would be terribly upset about that, just as long as they keep saying her name at all. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. It's something I've always hated - when I've been into an artist for quite a long time while they've been relatively obscure, and then suddenly, they leap into the "public domain" if you will, and you find yourself surrounded by people who *think* they know what's up... Something that's always driven me mad on Tori bootlegs is when I can hear in the background people shouting "Cornflake Girl! Cornflake Girl!".. if they've just come for one song, then why the hell are they at the concert? I know it's their right to buy a ticket, but it really spoils it for everyone else. Granted, it would probably annoy Tori, but I believe (and I don't know if I've said this before) that she should come on and play Cornflake Girl first - which means that the people who only know that have got what they came for and can leave after the first song, leaving the rest of the audience to get what *they* came for... and then perhaps if there's *that* much demand, do part of Cornflake Girl again as an encore or do something interesting with it (like the Dakota version of Hey Jupiter or the "Merry Widow" version of Professional Widow) If (and somehow I doubt it, at least in the UK) Tori suddenly becomes fashionable (we escaped Jewel becoming fashionable here, meaning that I still get to go and see her in venues holding 400 people ) then at least we'll see a surge in interest, meaning a surge in material that we can get hold of, and more bootlegs, more demand, more concerts, more airplay.... OK, we'll get the hangers-on who listen because it's fashionable, and sadly, Precious Things (the mailing list) might become full of mindless questions for a few months (this happened when Erasure had a brief resurgence in the US at the beginning of the year, and the Wonderland mailing list became *so* full of people asking "Is Andy Bell gay?" ) which might prove an inconvenience. But in all likelihood - is the new album really going to be mainstream enough, and the singles get enough airplay to get a *really* big new following? The thing that would be really sad for me is if it *is* successful and Tori ends up playing huge venues, where the acoustics are horrible, or ends up staying in the same size venues, and the real fans can't get tickets any more. (and that's something else I've seen). Anyway, just a couple of random thoughts. Mike Mike Gray - michael@pta15.u-net.com http://www.pta15.u-net.com/mike/index.html ^ Now including Celine Dion, Peach, Gloria Estefan, Tori Amos, Erasure... Why not give "Heart & Soul" by T'Pau a listen? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 1997 09:10:36 -0800 From: Chris Semon Subject: Posers? I think people need to be very careful when it comes to calling people "posers" because they are not familiar with Tori's full range of work. We ALL went through a period where we heard our first song by her and previously had no experience with Tori's music. Intrigued, we searched for more of the same music. What if an "enlightened and REAL" fan had then put us down or tried to shield Tori's music from us just because we hadn't heard it all before? All Tori fans are novices at one point in their life. Rather then making judgements on who knows the most about Tori or who is most qualified to listen to her music, it would serve a much better purpose to play some more of her music and open up a whole new world to the new Tori fan. No one is more deserving then another to enjoy Tori's music, and quite frankly this whole poser thing really smacks of elitism...something I suspect Tori herself abhorrs. If a person enjoys something about her music, they should be welcomed into our flock instead of making judgement calls on how deep their enjoyment goes. I consider myself relatively inexperienced in the whole Tori-realm of the world compared to the rest of the members of the list. However, I will never accept everyone who buys a CD as a true Tori fan. This kind of deals with a personal experience I had in class. One day, as I was kind of humming Tori in my head while sitting through a boring part class, I actually heard someone else humming Crucify. I looked around in a hurry to forge a bond with a fellow Tori fan. However, I ended up looking right at one of the three people in the class that I could not stand. Disgusted, I put my head down and hoped that it was a sign of hope for the guy. However, two weeks later, I realized there was no hope. We were talking about the historian (kind of) Livy, who talked about the early history of Rome. Livy includes in his story the account of a young woman who was raped. She commits suicide and is avenged through Brutus killing the rapist. Anyway, we were trying to connect this story to modern times. One female member of my class mentioned our modern ideas of punishment for the crime of rape. The member of the class who had been singing "Crucify" just blurts out, " Yeah Rape. You can't even talk to a woman without being accused of rape, anymore." One of the other people I didn't like instantly woke up from his constant state of napping in order to agree. Now, Crucify and "Me and My Gun" are on the same CD. How could anyone hear that song and not think that rape is a sad, sad event? That is one person that I will never accept as a true Tori fan.
