Look at artists like Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and many like them.. they're storytellers. They tell stories in song; whether fact or fiction, it's not about them. Honestly, for anyone to take 'One Hand In My Pocket' completely literally and then say "well hey, like, she can't play piano" or "'hey, like, you just can't call a cab like that these days" shows an astounding lack of interpretational skills! Of course, Alanis hasn't completely grasped the notion of irony in "Ironic" - more like "oh, what bad luck, it's pissing it down on my wedding day". I doubt she actually knows what it means and is having a laugh at her audience when they're yelling it though - artists who make fun of their audiences tend to lose popularity rather quickly. Look at U2 - their PopMart tour hasn't done nearly as well as Zoo TV, essentially because people will only have the piss taken out of them so much before they go and find some new mates. > "One Hand In My Pocket" > does not HAVE to be about Alanis. We have all been noticing different things--like Tori's lighter hair color, or more importantly, her new sound. I understand that every artist is going to evolve within time, like Tori has always done, and I do respect that, and I do trust her. I'm looking forward to the new album coming out. The thing that concerns me is how the concerts are going to be. I, like a lot of the people worried about the "new Tori", am a fairly new Tori fan--I only discovered her in the midst of Boys for Pele, and I have never seen her live. One of the things I fell in love with from the start though is the intimacy Tori has had with her audience--just a girl and her piano. And all the emotion. I'm worried now that her concerts will no longer have that level of intimacy--if she tours with a full band. I realize that Tori has changed thru all her albums--that Under the Pink was definitely different from Little Earthquakes and that Boys for Pele was definitely very different from Under the Pink, but they were all great. Even thru all that, though, her concerts have maintained that intimacy. And I just hope it is maintained this time around--I hope the band doesn't take away from that. Because, if it does, I will feel like I missed out on a lot. It makes me sad to think about it. :~) I guess one more factor I'm kind of scared of is the larger crowd she's drawing--that may make things different too. Is Tori still going to meet the fans? Or will it be too much? I don't know... If only I had known about her sooner! Oh well, that's my feelings about it, anyway. What do you guys think? Heck, I discovered Tori during her Little Earthquakes tour in the summer of 1992, and those shows were as intimate as a concert could get. You sat almost in her lap, and it seems like she was at your house playing for you. I really miss those days! As the years passed, things got less intimate. But there was no way to avoid that. As you get more popular you have to play larger venues. There is no way I would deny Tori the success she deserves, and she still strives as hard as possible to keep the shows asintimate as possible. I am sure she will do the same for the new tour. Even if there is a band, I have no doubt that she will do at least a third or fourth of the show alone still, so I still think you will get that "girl and her piano" thing for at least part of the concert. Or I certainly hope so! What *I* worry about is the fact that a band and perhaps more uptempo songs will put the crowd in a party-like mood, and that some people will not know how to shut up again when she plays something like Winter. I don't care what anyone says, anyone who shouts out stuff in the middle of a beauitful song like Winter is being very disrespectful, and I fear we will see more of that during the next concert. I didn't mean that I automatically, catagorically dislike a new sound. I meant just the opposit. What I love about Tori is her constant growth. It would SUCK if every album sounded the same, we need to continually evolve. I'm just expressing some spark of fear, but I know I'll love what comes up, because it'll open new doors for me, teach me to access new emotions. It's kind of like leaving a job for a new one, you have no idea what the new one will be like, it's safe where you are, but your career is stagnating and you know you need to move forward. You bite the bullet, make the move, and end up loving the new job. Personally, I love BfP right away, mainly because I was really looking for something with just Tori and the piano, no guitar, no drum... and that's exactly what it was like (aside from a few tunes--that I like a lot too) Each song/sound has it's own place, home. If you've heard the sample of 'Siren' from Mikewhy's site, you have a good idea of what the whole song sounds like. BUt they sent me some promotional materials as well, and I thought I'd share with you guys what it says about Tori's work on this project. "[Film director Alfonso] Cuaron and and [composer Patrick] Doyle searched out the world of pop, rock, jazz and classical to find artists whose autal approach matched their vision of GE. Tori Amos came on board after viewing a rough cut of the picture. Upon watching GE, Amos was sure she wanted to be involved. "'The film inspired me in a huge way,' says Amos. 'It gave me chills when I saw it, real chills. It touched a place in my heart and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.' "'It's two different worlds,' Cuaron notes. 'One is the classical world of Patrick and the other one is the rock stuff of Tori. So they were kind of afraid of each other. But when they got together, the moment they started music, it was just the same world.' "'When I met Tori, it was as if I'd known her all my life,' Doyle recalls. 'She's so accessible as a person, so grounded. She's clearly very talented, gifted in fact. I was just knocked out by her personality and the energy of the lady. Within twenty minutes, she was at the keyboard and I gave her an idea and said "What about this? Would you collaborate here?" The next thing, she was playing, I was playing, and it was like these two total strangers just playing together. It was really exciting. Her improvisational sense is extraordinary. You give her an idea and she's off.' "The good feeling between the two musicians turned out to be mutual. 'All I want to do is take a bath in Guinness with him,' Amos grins. 'I mean, I just adore Patrick. He brings a whole new integrity to music and film.' "Once involved, Amos needed to figure out how to approach the multi-layered thematic needs that a film score requires. She decided to tackle the project straight from the heart, creating music with the simple goal of matching the emotional content of the story. "'Tori's concern was not the technical side,' Cuaron says. 'Her concern was the character side of it. She was very concerned about the drama, about how what she was doing was affecting the screen.' "'Because things have to be so accurate, there isn't the same kind of freedom,' Amos says, noting the myriad differences between film scoring and her regular line of work. 'You're designing songs to the pictures, and it has to work. I mean, I've seen Ethan Hawke from every angle you can possibly imagine. I just went, 'Okay, how can I have some kind of marriage with this character?' "'There's a romance that's happening between her voice and his character,' she goes on. 'When he's a little boy, I'm the voice in his head. So as he gets older, that's still the voice in his head, reminding him what his feelings are.' "'Tori gives her voice to several scenes in the film,' Cuaron comments appreciatively. 'It's a voice that represents the purity of this child who's growing up.' - ---------------------------------------- From here it goes on to talk about some of the other musicians, but that's the part that deals directly with Tori. Quite tantalizing, isn't it? :) Beth - -- "And I try to laugh at whatever life brings Cuz when I look down I miss all the good stuff And when I look up I just trip over things."
