It was announced recently that Spivak Entertainment, Tori's management, no longer sanctions or supports Upside Down. Once the official fan club, nearly all money that was sent there over the past couple of years disappeared and fans never got what they paid for. The person who ran it said that "someone" who had been staying at his home "stole" all the money out of envelopes and made off with it. Mmmm hmmmmm. So forget that one. RDTF (the "f" is for "fanzine" to avoid confusion with the mailing list) and Take To The Sky are being endorsed as the official clubs now. But RDTF has been in its own shaky state of transition for the past two years. I paid my subscription fee (for two years) back in December of '95, and I've only received two fanzines since. But so have all the other members. They just never got it together at all for the last tour, which was very disappointing. However, they swear that they're pulling themselves together and are currently looking to find a new editor to get the fanzine back in swing for the release of the new album, so I think joining RDTF is a safe bet. They aren't much use for up-to-the-minute Torinews, since you'll learn about anything of interest her on the Web long before they manage to get printed info to you, but the fanzines are beautifully put together and worth having, and sometimes they offer posters or merchandise that you really can't find anywhere else anymore. So I would say definitely go with RDTF. The subscription rate is $17 within North America, $22 for folks living elsewhere. I've not personally seen or had contact with Take To The Sky, but I've heard people rave about the fanzines and how well-done they are. I have seen a few covers, and from the looks of them, it's worth joining for them alone. They're very unique works of art. I recently purchased a whole slew of Tori boots, some of which are really really good. One of the ones I got was the Mixed Up Girl boot, which has a bunch of Tori's remixes on it (copied from her other singles). One of the songs on this boot is God (The Rainforest Resort Mix) and I assume this is from one of her God singles that some of you may be familiar with. I would like to use this remix on a Tori interview/mix tape I am making, but something about the remix just doesn't sound right to me. Since I don't have the original, I have no way of knowing if the copy I have is complete or not - I am thinking it's possible a channel was blown on this song or something, and here's why: 1) Tori's voice sounds very slowed down and she never says anything besides "God sometimes", "don't come through", "pretty daisies", etc, almost like what I am hearing are the backing vocals, and the other channel with the main vocals on it is not coming through. Plus when she sings, you can hear her piano very faint in the background, but at no other time do you hear that. 2) The song consists mainly of tribal-sounding drums (which is very cool) and the occasional synthesizer, but nothing else really. Sometimes the drums go on for a long time with nothing else accompanying them. If any of you have the original remix and know if mine is, indeed screwey, or if you have any insight on this problem, PLEASE email me. I'm really confused here. I know it's not my particular CD, since I have tried it on many other CD-players. If the boot of this song is screwed up, I want to take it back to the store and ask them what the deal is. Thank you so much all. BTW, I am in the Boston area and would love to attend a Torifest here. Keep me posted. Heather ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 09:29:44 -0700 From: Dave Woodson Subject: what she needs is a good defense With regards to the quote Fiona Apple supposedly made about Tori, it was taken badly out of context. A letter by Fiona herself, posted to one of her mailing lists, was posted here on p.t. in digest #294, Oct 20. It is long, so I hesitate to repost the whole thing again so soon after the first time around, but it explains a lot of her "controversial" qoutes and how they have been misconstrued. Her explanation of the "poster girl for rape" quote is this; I do not think of Tori Amos as the "poster girl for rape"- I was merely referring to the danger in both of us being honest about our personal experience, when, as public figures, there is a tendency of the media to label us and reduce our music to simply a reflection of one cultural ill. It wasn't her opinion of Tori she was offering, but an opinion that might be held by someone who had bought a shallow, media driven view of Tori. Actually seeing the quote in context makes it much more clear. There's no need to get pissed at Fiona. It was all much ado about nothing. -Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 13:09:19 -0500 (EST) From: Traumachik@aol.com Subject: I want to start a list (nope, no Tori here) Hey all...I would like to start an email mailing list for the faaaabulous singer/songwriter Syd Straw on smoe.org. Can you shed some light on this? A: Tori Amos, 33, is indeed heard in this modern retelling of the Dickens classic, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke. Set for release on New Year's Eve, the film is still being scored, but we're told Amos contributes "wordless vocalizations that are very evocative and emotional." SHe also recorded an original song called "Siren" for a pivotal scene in the film. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 19:54:30 -0500 (EST) From: Lady Eorann Subject: Re: Starf___er??? [snipped all the Richard Gere stuff] Hello there. First of all, I think it's ridiculous to snip parts of the word starfucker just because there might be minors on the list. The truth is, if they can listen to Tori, the word "starfucker" isn't really going to phase them. So don't mince words here. We're all grown up enough to handle them. Okay, as to the meaning of the word. It's pretty simple (anyone correct me if I'm wrong, though!). It basically means anyone who wants to be "rubbing elbows" with the stars/celebrities. People who gobble up all that National Enquirer has to offer about Brad Pitt and Rosie O'Donnell and all the other current celebs, and basically wants to be "in" with them, but not in a positive, respectful way, but in a pushy way, to get what one wants. Ummm... I don't feel I'm conveying the feeling of the word. Basically it's "fans" who would sink as low as fucking a star just to be close to them. People who don't care for anything more important than catching a glimpse or maybe even meeting their favorite star. They try to hob-nob with celebs, always trying to elbow their way up, even if it means sleeping with someone. Ugh. My brain isn't quite putting it the way I want. Anyone else care to elaborate? Hope this helps, though, somewhat, as crazy as it is... :) Bright Blessings and Lollipops! Yvette. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Definitions are limiting.
