I still have a couple of comments though. > 4. And as I've asked before on this list, if anyone has any idea what it > was that prompted Tori to have performed Songbird those times, and in such > a specific geographic area, some of us would be interested to find out. > [Encore #1] > Landslide (Stevie Nicks-penned Fleetwood Mac song) > [Encore #2] > Songbird (Christine McVie-penned Fleetwood Mac song, Tori back on piano) Actually, I'd be quite interested in finding out why she played two Mac songs in one night! Obviously Tori was doing Landslide a lot on DDI (as well as on some occasions during Pink, as I have a boot from that era with Landslide on it, although I don't know if it was a common cover for her back then). As I posted over on RDT, I think there's a strong link between Nicks' Landslide and Tori's Winter, but that's a topic for another post. :) > The "squeeze my lemon" reference dates back to the oldest of the delta > blues musicians. Robert Johnson had the lyric, "You can squeeze my lemon > until the juice runs down my leg" in his song Traveling Riverside Blues. Not only did they pillage Johnson's lyrics for Lemon Song, but they did their own version of Travelling Riverside Blues as well. I don't know if that song appeared on any Zep albums prior to the singles box set, but I imagine it HAD to. Great song... I could listen to that slide guitar forever, not to mention Robert Plant wailing about getting his lemon squeezed. :) I would like to recommend to any Tori fan who's interested in Led Zeppelin this book, "Hammer of the Gods," which is the biography of the Zep -- the newer version includes information about the Encomium album and the Plant/Page reunion tour, whereas the original ended (I think) after Bonzo's death and the dissolution of the band. At any rate, since Tori draws so much inspiration from the band, not to mention her crush on Robert Plant during her early teen years, it makes sense to read this book on that level alone. I didn't find any real parallels there, but the book does go into great depth about how the musicians in Zeppelin, especially Jimmy Page, developed their style. Since we see how Johnson's work was filtered through Zeppelin, it makes sense to go one further and discover how Zeppelin's influence shines in Tori's work -- and in places it most certainly does. Robert's singing about lemons and Tori's singing about icicles... :) I've always found it interesting that Tori chose to go with Atlantic, who was (and is) Zeppelin's record label. I don't know if she went through a heavy bidding war or if Atlantic was the main interest when she was starting out (YKTR was on Atlantic, wasn't it?) but Tori must have thought it was synchonicity when she signed with them, don't you think? It's inserted into local Sunday papers in many cities around the U.S--maybe Canada, too, but I kinda doubt it. Anyhow, inside the front cover every week they have a column called Walter Scott's Personality Parade. It consists of questions readers submit pertaining to celebrities, and then the magazine prints the questions and answers-- answers usually gathered from official sources, but sometimes when it's difficult to get comments from publicists for the celebs, they reference other sources, too. (I expect most of you in the U.S. already know all that, but we're addressing the world, here.) Anyway, in this week's issue dated November 9, there's a question about Tori's involvement with Great Expectations, from none other than Doug Smeath, who's on the Really Deep Thoughts (Right Now) mailing list! Way to go, Doug! :-) There's also a small color head shot of Tori from the Calvin Klein news conference last December 4. (Photo credit is Renault/Globe.) Doug's question and answer below. (They got her age wrong, but what *else* is new.) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ___________________________________________________________________ Q I'm thrilled about the upcoming remake of *Great Expectations.* I heard that Tori Amos plays a big part on the soundtrack. Can you shed some light on this?--Doug Smeath, South Jordan, Utah A Tori Amos, 33, is indeed heard in this modern retelling of the Dickens classic, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke. Set for release on New Year's Eve, the film is still being scored, but we're told Amos contributes "wordless vocalizations that are very evocative and emotional." She also recorded an original song called "Siren" for a pivotal scene in the film. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Nov 1997 12:18:28 +0000 From: Mike Gray Subject: Re: rare tori songs While we're on rare Tori songs, can anyone tell me about the origins of the following: "Ain't No Sunshine" (Live) "Imagine" (Live) "Sentimental Journey" (Live) Also the solo piano versions of "Leather" and "China". I've got all of these on CDs, but I was wondering where they originally came from. Hi there, I just wanted to ask you people a quick question: which Tori Fan Clubs are still alive? I'm iintending to join at least one of them, and I would also like to know how much $$ you have to pay to join them. I'm not sure RDT is still alive, and i've no clue on UPSIDE DOWN or TAKE TO THE SKY fanzines. Also, can u please name some cool Tori bootlegs out there? I also want to get my hands on a few of them, but i'm not sure where to find info related to them, like prices, quality and track listings. I'd be thankfull for any info or link you can provide me of. Finally, my Tori Tribute Page, CORNFLAKE CITY has been updated with the complete lyrics to Y KANT TORI READ. Please check them out. Probably not, but it certainly is interesting as hell (and she most likely wouldn't be offended, anyhow)! (by the way, I didn't know about peeping tomi or motormaids - cool!) I do know that sometime in either the UtP or LE tour, Tori DID do The Lemon Song - one of the more well-known web masters mentioned having a copy to me once - I won't post his name because I don't think he'd be able to handle the volume of requests, and no guessing please. My point is that Tori did do these publicly - or at least did it in some fashion that someone was able to get a tape of it - hey, for all I know, the web master got a tape from someone who taped Tori singing in the shower (I'm KIDDING!) Anyone up for a November Torifest in the Boston area? This is how it read: "Indeed, she talked about whatever came into her head:her feelings about Tori Amos("a poster girl for rape"), Maya Angelou (her idol), and psychiatric drugs (they help keep her sane). " Well, this is the first time I'd seen this quote and to tell you the truth it just slapped me in the face as the most thoughtless and cruel thing to say about a peer. Especially from someone who tries to sell herself as being an extremely oversensitive individual who despises the thought of people being thoughtless and cruel to one another. That's how it struck me and that's why I was shocked and angered. But then I went backwards a little with the digests just in case this topic had been discussed before and indeed it had, I just caught the tail end of it being new to this list and all. And I can see how it could be taken out of context and misconstrued as a slam as was pointed out. It could actually be completely inaccurate and considering the source of the interview, (was it Howard Stern someone said?), she could have been completely led by the interviewer and the words came out sounding mean. That's a real shame if that's the truth, but I think it would be worse if she really said that about Tori...it would be nothing less than a cheap shot, even if she meant it as meaning she didn't want to be identified solely by her experience with rape. She could have just said THAT instead of slamming Tori outright in the process. I don't know, someone please correct me if I'm taking this the wrong way because I actually have tickets to see her show next week and I'm starting to consider moving close enough to the stage to reach out and slap her once..ok, just kidding, it's not that bad..but I'd really like to get off the fence with my feelings about her as a person and start liking her...I know, I know. She's real real young and didn't we all do and say things we regretted later when we were that age...well I know I did....but SHEESH! Ironically, as I'm sure some of you have noticed, Tori gives her a nice little endorsement in the Rolling Stone's Women In Rock issue. CELEBRITIES! (what are ya gonna do?)
