You know, it's amazing that, being in Boston, where Tori sells out shows regularly, I still have problems finding someone who respects Tori as much as I do. At least that > is my take on the law. (And I have worked with it before.) Ummm... maybe in high school. But I am a film student, and I have a friend that used Frog On My Toe in his 15 minute film for a class, and he had to get legal permission to use it. Because if he didn't, he'd never be able to get into a festival or anything without running the risk of being accused of copyright infringement. He wound up dealing with Tori's dad. (who, BTW, was super nice to him). So yes this can be as touchy as using her likeness on a t-shirt. I'm not attacking anyone, just saying that the previous statement that when getting the rights to a song you will probably deal with Tori's dad is not totally inaccurate, like you claim, Karen. I totally agree that Spivak can be a real pain in the ass to deal with, and I do not doubt how horribly you were treated (which made me very angry to hear, especially since you were giving the profits to RAINN!). As far as getting in touch with Tori, the sad truth is that you will probably have to find a way to meet her (or know someone who does) and hand her your letter yourself. That's what I did. I tried the fan-letter thing once, and only once, and I got a response (a one line response at that!) from RDT, which made me upset and angry, that someone who had no right to read my letter had read it, and saw the personal things I wrote for Tori. Of course, later I thought about it and I realized how silly I was to think that Tori would get my letter through Spivak or RDT, so I did what any intelligent person would do: I wrote a short letter and handed it to her when I saw her after her Miami show. My sister did the same, and, on a semi-related note, you should have seen Tori's face when Yvonne (my kid sister) handed her the note, which was folded in what I term oragami. My sister has a very creative way of folding notes (very much like oragami) and Tori took it in her hand, looked at it curiously (as if trying to figure out how to open it!), smiled at my sister, and put it in her pocket. It was hysterical! Okay, this has gotten too long. Sorry! :} Just wanted to add my 2 cents on these issues. Bright Blessings and Lollipops! About a week ago I did a search for Sandman on the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) and it said that this movie is supposed to come out in Christmas 1998. It said that Tori, Alanis and Sting are contributing to the soundtrack and that Neil's directing. Johnny Depp was being negotiated with about being Dream and Lori Leighton (Sydney from Melrose) was supposedly already signed as Death. I just checked yesterday to see if there was any update, and the whole thing wasn't there any more. Does anybody else know anything about this? PS Johnny Depp would be a good Dream(remember Edward Scissorhands?), but Laura Leighton as Death? I knew damn well I'd seen Eric Rosse and Steve Caton listed as having done background vocals all over the credits in the Little Earthquakes album, and Beenie (Tori's best female friend Nancy Shanks) with her nickname misspelled as Beene in the notes in multiple places, too. As any of you who cares must well know by now (since you weren't stuck at your job without the LE album as I was last night), no voices other than Tori's are listed in the specific song credits for Girl in the CD booklet. This is clearly an error of omission, and not the only time an oversight of this very type has happened in Tori's album notes. First off, for those who said they didn't hear any male vocals anywhere in the song, check out two places--the 2:11 minute/second mark when the "rushin' rivers..." part begins, and then again at the 3:03 mark where there is a male voice which speaks "sit in the chair and be good now." As a trained studio recording engineer (I studied recording engineering at Omega Studios, the same place BT did here in Maryland), although I do think it's possible that some of the layered vocals which begin at the 2:11 mark may be, in fact, Tori's voice which was manipulated to sound like that of a man's (which I doubt because I don't know why she and Eric would have gone to the trouble to do that instead of just laying the track with Eric's *own* voice), it sounds to me that there are others of the layered background vocals which definitely are genuine male voices, and clearly, the speaking voice at the 3:03 mark is also a genuine male voice. By the time LE was recorded, pitch quantization was done electronically, not by tape manipulation. Whoever mentioned the Alvin and the Chipmunks effect was right about that having been done back in the 1950s through a tape manipulation process. The Beatles also engaged in effects such as that in some of their recordings, but things such as lowering the pitch of vocals took a distinctly high tech turn, when, in 1975, a company called Eventide introduced the first of its very successful line of outboard studio processors--their line of Harmonizers. All of a sudden, one could assign any given pitch within a wide range from the original source's pitch by dialing a knob, and even by using a tiny piano-like keyboard. These days, those are just the simplest effects made possible by using such devices, which can come with literally thousands of preset effects. One of the main reasons that Harmonizers came so quickly to be the recording industry standard in adjusting pitch--typically on vocals--was that one was able to retain the envelope of the original sound. The envelope is both the suddeness of the onset--the "attack"--and the diminution--the "decay"--~of the waning sound. (Anyone who ever programmed a synthesizer will be familiar with adjusting the envelope of a sound.) Were you to take a recording of a voice and, using a Harmonizer, shift the pitch up to that of the Chipmunk voices, it would not cause a sound with much in common with the Chipmunk voices created through manipulation of recording tape, because the envelope would remain pretty much intact. Tape manipulation to raise or lower pitch results in a faster or slower attack and decay cycle as compared to shifting the pitch electronically, which is why engineers love the things. Electronically pitch-adjusted sounds keep most of the sonically identifiable qualities the same as they were before adjusting the pitch, so the sound in question retains most of its original "flavor," if you will. Great for sweetening sound, lousy for making Chipmunks. However, there are enough other sonic cues I hear in the background vocals in Girl which begin at the 2:11 mark which make me feel with near certainty that at least some of them are not manipulated versions of Tori's voice. I feel the same about the male speaking voice at the 3:03 mark--that it's not Tori. Having spoken a great deal with Caton, I seriously doubt it's Caton's voice. It's most likely Eric's. When I first listened to Sneeze off Pele, I heard a clavichord. It's quite prominent, even. There is no clavichord listed in the specific song credits for Sneeze though, and it was making me crazy, until I noticed in the back of the booklet for Pele that there were credits for the makers of the instruments played by Tori on the album, and it said the clavichord she played was made by Adam Swainson. Bingo! Now, I *knew* I heard a clavichord in Sneeze. I didn't need confirmation in the notes to tell me that. *Why* wasn't the clavichord listed among the instruments used in Sneeze? I have no idea. As I say, it's quite prominent. By contrast, the only male vocals in Girl don't last much more than twenty total seconds of the entire song--which just may be the main reason they aren't listed in the credits for the song itself. At least the names of Tori's good friends Beenie and Rantz are properly spelled in the Pele notes, as opposed to the LE notes. Anyhow, surely the males voices in Girl are Eric Rosse and/or Steve Caton. And I'm never going to work without a copy of the Little Earthquakes CD ever again. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G.
