NEW ALBUM NEWS A recent item on MS MusicCentral (http://musiccentral.msn.com) quoted Atlantic Records as saying that Tori's next album would be out in March of 1998. No word on title, contents, or any possible tour plans. GREAT EXPECTATIONS The upcoming movie "Great Expectations" has been entered into the Internet Movie DataBase (http://www.imdb.com) and lists both Tori Amos and Patrick Doyle in the "Music By" category. This is an updated-for-the-90s version of the Charles Dickens story and stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke, Hank Azaria (who also does a voice in the upcoming animated film "Anastasia" - shall we play the "Count The Tori Connections" game? :), Anne Bancroft, and Robert DeNiro. This movie is expected out late December '97. Current reports are that the soundtrack will be out mid-November but that seems much too early, I'm guessing early December (in time for Christmas). No concrete info on how much music or how many songs Tori did for this movie. YAHOO! INTERNET LIFE The October 1997 print issue of "YAHOO! Internet Life" magazine contains a music feature titled "The Web's Top 40/18-Page Guide" which lists our very own Tori at the number three spot (p 67)! One of the introductory paragraphs reads, "With each of her albums quirkier than the last, Tori Amos might have disappeared from the pop landscape were it not for her ardent online following, one of the most passionate in cyberspace." While I hardly think Tori would have disappeared, the fans definitely are passionate! A full-page feature (p 76) has a picture of Tori and lists several on-line resources. The "YAHOO! Internet Life" web site (http://www.yil.com) still has the September issue up but you can get the new October issue at US newsstands now. TORI SAMPLED A new CD compilation titled "Urbal Beats" has recently been released. It contains a mix by DJ "Rabbit In The Moon" which samples from "Precious Things". In a related item, Salt Tank has used part of "Me And A Gun" in the "Eugina (Pacific Diva)" mix. This can be found on the album "Science & Nature", the "Platinum on Black, vol III" CD, and the "Eugina" CD single. 1998 TORI CALENDARS The 1998 Tori Amos calendars are out now. A nice big photo of Tori on every month! Sonia Arora wrote: >Hi! I was just wondering if Tori believes in God, umm what her >thoughts are on religion?? etc....just curious.... I believe she does, yes. She has specifically spoken of believing that there is a higher power, anyway. What she *doesn't* believe in is "Organized Religion," the political entity that tells the masses what to think. She believes that if Jesus was the Son of God sent here to die for our sins, he would also have been human and would have experienced life in the same ways as the rest of us. The idea that he was chaste makes no sense to her. First of all, she points out that the "Virgin Mary" wasn't so pure as the Church makes her out to be: she had other children, so she obviously "did it" many times in her life. She was a woman, and the whole "virgin worship" thing has caused a lot of damage to womankind down through the centuries. She also believes that Jesus had a sexual relationship with *and a child by* Mary Magdalene and that, in a literal historical sense, the "Holy Grail" actually was Mary Magdalene's womb carrying the child (the blood) of Christ. So she believes that there are direct blood descendents of Jesus. She's not alone in this belief -- there is quite a bit of fascinating historical study that's been done on this (the leading book on the subject, and one of Tori's favorites, is "Holy Blood, Holy Grail". I would give the name of the author, but I'm too lazy to go hunt for it on the shelf at the moment. But it's very good.) Something that I'm not sure Tori is aware of and that I've always meant to talk to her about is the fact that there *is* a Christian Goddess. This female aspect of the Christian trinity was stamped out by the patriarchal fathers centuries ago, changing Her into the "dove" that is the Holy Spirit. So girls, be aware that there IS a female in Christianity and the political Church purposely took that away from us. The name of the Christian Goddess is Sophia (Wisdom). Even today, when there are *still* references to Her by name (Wisdom) in the Bible, the Church REFUSES to honor Her, even though they are fully aware of Her existence. Recently (over the past 20 years or so), a very few indendent (usually non-denominational) churches have started bringing Her BACK into their beliefs, and you can find many books on the subject. My personal fav is "Wisdom's Feast," and again, I'm to lazy to check the author. Another great one is titled "The Feminine Dimension of the Divine: A Study of Sophia and Feminine Images in Religion" and it's sitting here next to me, so I can tell you it's by Joan Chamberlain Engelsman. But there are many. Go to the library and search for Wisdom or Sophia. Or, you can go to the women's studies section of most bookstores and find Her mentioned in books on religion (also look for things in the section on religion, too). If I go on about Sophia, it's because learning about Her existence had a major affect on me and destroyed my own trust in the Church (especially as far as their regards for women's welfare and enrichment are concerned). It's precisely things like this -- that a Goddess DOES EXIST in one of the world's most-practiced religions, yet the Church is still sweeping it under the rug and disrespecting the female so blatantly -- that cause Tori to rail against the patriarchal Church so vocally. A lot of writing there.... Violet xoxox * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Sex is my religion. I know that > some tori songs might be a little mean towards guys, and yet I still enjot > it. Ummm... I don't think any of her songs are really mean. If you think that because she emphasizes women in some of her songs that means she hates men, well, I must disagree. I don't understand why so many people think she is a man-hater (I'm not accusing you of this! I'm just saying people in general :) ). she herself has said that she wants to bring both sides of everyone (the masculine AND the feminine) into her work. I think maybe she emphasizes women because our society is male-dominated in its values and ideals (even if there are more women int he world), so there's a little more that is hidden from the eyes of people in their everyday lives. I could go on and on about femininity versus feminism, and men versus women in society and other ohj-so-fun topics, but I won't. Anyway, this is just my humble opinion, I hope no one takes offense to it! At any rate, I don't think you should pay any attention to female Tori-philes who treat you as inferior in any way because you're a guy. That's plain silly! Bright Blessings and Lollipops! The best thing about this list is that people post their thoughts, and you know you feel that too, it's just so great to find somebody who does. It's like therapy (to me). I can remember the first time I heard BfP, and then LE. BfP was first, and I didn't read the lyrics until later. LE, I read them right away, and the feeling I got from it wasn't as overwhelming as BfP's. It might have been because of the differences between them, but i think that when you listen to the music first and read the lyrics later, you form your own opinion of the songs, the music may mean something different. So whenever I lend my CD's to anybody, I tell them two things: don't read the lyrics yet, and listen to it all by yourself. At least I feel that other non-EWF around me while I listen to her interfere with the communication between me and me that tori helps to bring, and that makes her music so precious to me. And of course, I only feel comfortable lending them to people who might understand the songs. - -alicia ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 17:07:13 GMT From: aliciau@ibm.net Subject: Re: confused toriphile I'd KILL to have a guy friend who likes tori.
