I am partial to UtP because that was the first one i bought for myself, the one that really brought me into Tori (i had heard her before, I had LE, but UtP really did it for me). Anyway, i feel that with each album we're watching the progression, the growth of an artist. I think LE was her most "radio-friendly" kind of album, but technically I think BfP is her most superior album. At any rate, I am really looking forward to album number four, because I've seen her grow so much since LE, and I can only see her musical horizons expanding further and further every time she records something new. I don't think we'll ever get anything like LE out of her again, though, so don't expect that, because as I said, she's grown so much, so far past that. Anyway, that's my $.02! It wasn't until almost a year later that Precious Things became one of my favorite songs. I used to kind of "gloss over" it when listening to the whole album in a sitting, but then I saw her perform the song on the Little Earthquakes video tape and I don't think I've ever seen a more intense bout of piano playing by anybody before or since. It's a great video (still available in a lot of places even though it's out of print) that has turned on a couple of non-tori friends. I like to "subtley" have it on the tube in the background when friends drop over. They usually start noticing that it's playing and we usually end up watching the whole thing. But, that's all just MHO, of course. I don't think that I can pick a favorite album right now. It really depends on my mood. There are those cutting times when LE goes into the changer, along with the Winter single, NIN's Pretty Hate Machine, REM's Nightswimming single, and the Indigo Girls' I Don't Wanna Talk About It single; I listen to those and just try to stay away from sharp objects or my car keys. Josh present. The best Tori album is without a doubt, Little Earthquakes. Why? Because of the feeling behind the words. When she sings the songs on this album, Tori has this... passion in her voice, and you can tell that the songs all have deep meaning to her. And that feeling is conveyed to the listener. Under The Pink is good too, but that initial heat is absent. And Boys For Pele - I was sort of dissappointed. There are songs I like there, but it just didn't hit home for me. Don't hate me or something. It's just I think that the first is so... real. Actually, I think people's favourite Tori album is usually their first. Because each one has a different style to it, and if you like that style, then you're going to expect that on the next CD. But when you hear the next one, it's different and on some level you're dissappointed. Am I right? Does anyone read this? Hi hi, I think that Little Earthquakes is *definitely* her best album, and not because it was the first disc of hers I got. I think it speaks the most about deep heart wrenching experiences, it's the most brutally honest of the three. I read that after LE she decided to take a step back and not share so much of her inner self for future recordings. She said that LE was like a kind of "diary" to her, maybe that's why it speaks so deeply to me, especially after having undergone quite a few of the same trials and tribulations she did. I also tend to like poetry and literature that speak from deep personal experiences, but maybe that's just me. ;) I like Boys for Pele second, because some of the songs do capture that raw openness ; and then Under the Pink, which although I think it is pretty, I just don't relate to it as much. Certain rarities and B-sides also capture that feeling for me-- In My Head especially, I've been thinking of covering it, but I don't think I could talk my music making mates into it... feh. I don't have the interview right handy, but Tori does profess to reading quite a bit as well. If my memory serves, she said that the guys on the tour always complained 'cause the bus was full of her books. ;) ISTR that Tori is a fan of Sylvia Plath, but I haven't read anything by her myself. And I hesitate to bring this up, but she's also obviously a Neil Gaiman fan. /nad *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce. When I was in high school, there was this very beautiful, very strange girl, who only had one friend, and who no one else spoke to very often. I was fascinated by her, and we took to talking. We found certain shared interests, etc. Then one day, when we were on a school trip to Northern Florida, she gave me her Walkman and told me to press play and just listen. Mother spilled through the speakers. I listened, enraptured, trying to take in every nuance in the music at once. I went ahead and listened to the rest of the tape, and later I got my own copy of LE (which I sadly later lost!--but fear not, it was replaced almost immediately after I got UtP). However, I was just 15, and not that well-developed as far as my musical tastes went, so it really took the release of UtP and in particular the song God to really turn me into a true Tori-phile. God really spoke to me at that time (i was trapped in a repressive Christian day school--yech!), and I was hooked from that day forth. That's it. My story. You asked for it! ;) Bright Blessings and Lollipops! LE. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Definitions are limiting. Limitations are deadening. In a sense, i see LE as more simple (not a great word, but the only one i can think of. it's been a loooong day at school and my brain's not working that well right now:P), at least musically and lyrically it's less enigmatic than UtP and BfP. It's more easily accessible, and it goes to the heart of some very personal subjects. > IMHO, the most "radio-friendly" album is UtP. {At least, it's by far the > one I hear the most singles from. You're lucky if you've actually heard God on the radio! Here in the cultural wasteland that is So. Florida, we're lucky if the local college station plays SATY every once in a blue moon! I wonder if there's anything we can do to try to remedy the lack of Tori content on the radio? I suppose none of her albums are very radio-friendly at all, mostly because the lyrics aren't clear-cut ("I want you... ooo...ooo" or something of that disgusting type!), her songs you have to sit and think about to really understand and appreciate them. And most people are not up for that. They'd rather sit and hear the Spice Girls whine about "if you wannabe my lover..." Sad, isn't it? > It really depends on my mood. That's 100% true. LE has gotten me through some serious stuff. I ride the waves of anger (esp. Precious Things), sadness (Winter, Mother, etc.), frustration (China, Leather, Tear In Your Hand) until reaching a certain closure in Little Earthquakes. it has yet to fail me. UtP was my first love. And BfP still challenges me at every listen to try to make heads or tails of it, and just when i think I've got a handle on it, it slips right through my fingers again. What can i say? I love them all. Bright Blessings and Lollipops! LE. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Definitions are limiting. Limitations are deadening. Well, let's see... I think my favorite of her albums is by far LE. I identify most with it and it is what hooked me to her. I am bi-polar and was living at home (an abusive one at that). She was an escape. She convinced me to stop being silent and get out. My favorite song: geez! It's a large tie between: Winter, Precious Things, LE, SATY, God, CfG, Icicle, Hey Jupiter (Dakota Version), CALS, and Muhammad My Friend. My favorite Bee-side: Honey, deinfatly. Her best album: well, all of them. Favorite Video: Tie between God and Hey Jupiter. :) Raven - --- - -Life is like a messy room. >On Mon, 8 Sep 1997, Lady Eorann wrote: > >[snip] > >> I think LE was her most "radio-friendly" kind of album, > >I really don't think of LE as -at all- radio friendly. {Esp since I've >only heard one song from that album once on the radio.} I think of LE as >the most -listener friendly-, but not radio friendly.
