Just so y'all know. Grayzone is a legal firm that SPECIFICALLY hunts down and proscecutes Bootleg Dealers and manufacturers, so their page is a bit one-sided... I was just reading a article about this the other day in WIRED. I think it was the January 1997 issue... Their version was more neutral. Of course, this doesn't change the fact that a lot of boot dealers have been scared out/put out of business since the busts. - -- Jason Bilsky fuzzbox@world.std.com http://world.std.com/~fuzzbox "I'm in love, I'm insane, I'm a pheromone, hormone, mystery train" -Lauren Christy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Aug 1997 21:04:02 +0930 From: FLOOD <9606523y@MAGPIE.MAGILL.UNISA.EDU.AU> Subject: Re: Tori's English place TTFN is an acronym for Ta Ta For Now, which I picked up from a Batman comic that I read about three years ago. Around here {Atlanta}, everyone seems to be back to business as usual. For a period of 3-4 months earlier this year, -no- stores were stocking boots [1]. {Atlanta got hit by a big crackdown. One day, all the stores had boots; literally the next day, none of them did. It was very strange.} The prices around here are about what they've been for boots, too. *shrug* Maybe I'm just lucky enough to live in a good market, I dunno. /nad [1] Actually, my favorite store still had their supply of vinyl boots, which I found strange. *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce. I've read everything I can find and still > > don't feel like I know 1/8 of what you do! If the question is "what is meant by 'ashre' in "Muhammed my Friend", I had thought that we were still at the point of wondering and not gotten to knowing yet! Richard Handal and I both thought perhaps she means "Ashera" which wouldn't be way out in left field, but is by no means certain. The descriptions of the Hebrew meaning also made sense. It *is* interesting to me, however, that similar elements come up in other music as well. Ashera was quite obviously hinted at in Laura Love's latest CD, _Octoroon_, in the song "Can't Understand". Laura Love does "Afro-Celtic" music (for lack of a better category) which is really cool, though quite different from Tori's music. Though she does spirituals as well, the song "Can't Understand" has the lines (the "he" in the song is God): in another incline, in another place and time in another reported point of view is a hill and a tree just as sacred as was he oh I just can't understand... As we discussed in earlier posts, the Tree on the Hill was thought to embody Ashera in old testament times. On another note of awareness of these issues, not specifically dealing with Ashera, but with the demonization of Salome (and women) in the Bible, Susan McKeown has a scathing reply to the "new order of the old testament" in her song, "Salome". This is released via Prime CD on Sheila-Na-Gig music (the Sheila's were prominent on Irish churches, and featured a woman with her legs apart, labia spread, symbolizing the womb, death, and rebirth... though information on these Sheilas is spotty to say the least). Recall also P. J. Harvey's song called "Sheila-Na-Gig", which reportedly she wrote without knowledge of the mythology / history, but was struck by all these *interesting* statues on churches... Anyway, an excerpt from "Salome", on the _Bones_ cd by Susan McKeown, is as follows: So let your crusade begin against the devil and the demon within Wherever you wander casting out devils and condemning the sin And if God's on your side Then there's no hope for us is that right You can go call up your guardian angels with their faces of fire They'll give you all the sayings to keep us dumb and blind She wants your head on a plate And she'll do more than dance to get it ... A great song, in my opinion... > Oh, the deeper I go into all this the more frustrated I > become, as I realize how much I need to quit my job to be > able to study all this ten and twelve hours a day if I'm > ever gonna stand a chance of really knowing anywhere near > the amount that I would *like* to know about it. That > realization genuinely pains me. As far as learning about Tori, well, that's what we have the list and her music (and articles) for... the journey is the reward (or the fun is in the learning). If the *it* you are referring to is the mythology / religion stuff, however, then don't worry too much - the experts don't know either, and they've spent a lot of time than you or I have on these things. > These lists are for sharing, though. And it certianly is > not about having a contest as to who's a bigger fan or > anything like that. The competitive thing some people have > put on this for them is disturbing to me, to say the > least. I can't abide that. I just leave all that alone. Let > them compete with themselves. I think that we've all seen what overly competetive attitudes do (have done) to us and the earth. Since so much of "western" (europe, america, etc.) behavior is very competetive, we tend to compete when there's no need. We are, however, human, and a certain amount of competition occurs just because of the drive to survive. Especially in this world, where physical competition of old (e.g., who can survive the cold winter or find the food) has given way to mental competition (who has the best grades / job / business skills), overly-competitiveness rears its ugly head. Also, people who are *not* as competetive tend to play down their interests / strengths so as not to attract a power struggle with the more competetive types (who'd love to try to compete with someone who acts competent). > But honestly: when all is said and done, the main thing > about Tori for me is the feeling. I get an overwhelming > amount of the feeling by simply listening to the > music. Understanding gained from knowing all that other > stuff is pretty much icing on the cake for me. I say as > long as you keep hold of the feeling, you're doing > alright. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. I see music as a spiritual thing (as many of you do, I know) --- a part of the overall quest for understanding the meaning of this life (and lots of other stuff -- another topic). Great artists like Tori help me to better understand the feelings I have, and what I share with others... she seems like she pulls these images out of the deep dark earth, like a tree pulls up water, and puts them out there for us to enjoy, understand, and contemplate. She reaches her roots into the caverns of the underworld, and raises her head to the stars, and sings with her heart. yeah. I also am intrigued by what people have done in the name of religion. A real eye-opener was Mircea Eliade's three-part "History of Religious Ideas" -- if you want to see what these crazy humans come up with, take a peek! But mostly, I see the spiritual more in the experience rather than the analysis. Religions have a knack of taking something originally inspiring and beautiful and turning it into dogma and justification for oppression..... oh well. I better stop, before I get *too* TOO off track here. Sorry for the rambling nature of this post.... Thanks for all the interesting discussion around this! - -Richard (Holmes) @ \@/ Richard A. Hello Mr. Zebra! I have a question you all may be able to answer about Tori for me. I'm really not trying to be perverted here or anything, I'm just curious. Tori talks sometimes about "losing her virginity at an inanely young age". I have a feeling her Robert Plant fantasy never materialized and I have just wondered when this was and who was involved. I never heard of any serious relationships before Eric, but I guess if she was that young it may not count as a relationship. Does anybody out there in cyberland know the dirt on this? So anyway...don't think I'm this big sicko or anything; I've just wondered that. Thank you and it appears I've got a place to go now so I'll catch a ride with the moon to take to the sky!
