Nice to see you here :) My suggestions: Blood Roses Dew Drop Inn, boulder CO (double set) the quality and selection of various radio/live performances on blood roses are unmached, and dew drop inn is the best audience recording I have heard, and has TONS of great stuff, unlike some other double cd sets (Pa) which gyp you on the 2nd cd. If I were you I'd give rainy day records a call. They are fantastic, and I have gotten most of my cd's from them that I have mail ordered. -j ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 1997 12:07:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Neil Young Subject: Re: tori vs. fiona I totally agree! It is the best soundboard recording I have heard of a Tori show. The majority of Tori boots are audience recordings and the balance between the piano and Tori's voice never seems quite right. Purple Rose does the best job I've heard so far. I've just seen the Sandman comics, and it's funny, but one of the characters, Delirium (once Delight) is a bit very much like Tori, A redhead with green/blue eyes. Read some description of hers: She smells of sweat, sour wines, late nights, and leather. Her realm is close, and can be visited; however, human minds were not made to comprehend her domain, and those few who have made the journey have been incapable of reporting more than the tiniest fragments. [snip] In early 1991, while _Little Earthquakes_ was an album-in-progress, Atlantic Records sent Tori off to London to work with their colleagues at East West Records. It was there where she saw the movie, "Thelma and Louise," wrote "Me and a Gun, and met her photographer, Cindy Palmano, and acquainted Neil Gaiman with her music. The following is quoted from _Tori Amos The Authorized Biography, All These Years_ by Kalen Rogers: Tori's friendship with Neil Gaiman, the author of _Sandman_, D.C. Comics fantastically popular and unusual series, began in a slightly less direct fashion [as compared to meeting Cindy]. After including a reference to Neil and to the Dream King, the main character in the _Sandman_ series, in "Tear in Your Hand," Tori had a friend deliver a tape of the song to Neil at a San Diego comic convention. Neil, who receives many tapes from fans which he says usually "magically become blank tapes" remembers, "I listened to the first three or four tracks, and I was in love. It wasn't _Little Earthquakes_, it was sort of half _Little Earthquakes_ and half what wound up being B-sides -- things like 'Flying Dutchman' and 'Take to the Sky' and 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Upside Down.' But it was very obvious that musically I was a fan by the time I'd finished listening to the first few tracks. In fact it was ages before I spotted the 'me and Neil'll be hangin' out with the DREAM KING Neil says hi by the way' -- that came much later." After listening to the tape, Neil, who lived in London, called Tori up, and the first of many wonderful conversations commenced. Tori now insists that the two knew each other in a past life. Neil states, "we were old friends immediately. Whether you want to view that as fact or metaphor, that's very much true." One of the few eyewitnesses to Tori's early gigs in London, Neil remembers the first time he met her in person when he was one of an audience of four people at the Canal Brasserie in London's Notting Hill. The other three members of the crowd were, according to Neil, "a roadie person," a reporter from _Melody Maker_, and Lee Ellen Newman. The owner of the brasserie was also present, but as he was having dinner with a few friends around a table he isn't counted. Neil recalls, "Tori waved at me when I cam in -- recognizing me, and sent straight off into 'Tear in Your Hand.' It was really lovely. She performed "Me and a Gun" -- it was stunning." A review of the Canal Brasserie performance appeared in the October 12, 1991, issue of _Melody Maker_, and reviewer David Stubbs proclaimed that, "Live, Tori's music makes for absolutely compelling, but uncomfortable listening... I felt like I've cheated on my wife, although I haven't. Honestly." Gaiman as since used Tori's song lyrics and quotes from their discussions in the _Sandman_ series, and one of the main characters, Delirium, has taken on more than a few mental and physical attributes of Tori's. Neil says, "Delirium was created before I met Tori, but the steal shamelessly from each other." end of quote Hope that helps. For information about all known bootlegs, check out the Tori-boot webpage at: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/alley/4370/tabdnew.html Hopefully, your local store that stocks boots will let you listen to it in the store before you plunk down $20-$30 for a single CD or $45-$60 for a double CD. If you're stuck with mail order, though, the list above is a pretty good resource. Personlly, I recently picked up "Dew Drop Inn Boulder", which is a 2CD set. It has all of the last DDI show, and highlights from the previous night. The sound quality is quite good, and the setlist is great. Some folks have mentioned things like "Precious Rarities" and other such "counterfiets". These CDs are actually taken from -legit- recordings {mostly collections of b-sides}, and, for the most part, you can easily get those same songs on the legit thing. {One exception to this is any counterfeit that has "If 6 Was 9" and "Strange Fruit", from the very hard-to-find UK ltd Cornflake Girl single. The only boot that I've seen with this is one called "Over the Pink".} And be aware! Just 'cause a song is listed on the CD doesn't mean it's there! There are a good number of boots out there where the setlist is inaccurate, either missing songs or completely misnaming songs. For finding out the correct setlist of a boot, the webpage I listed above is invaluable. If you're stuck with mail order, I -highly- recommend Rainy Day Records. They're currently located in Atlanta, but they're moving to Key West, FL. {If any of y'all are down there, give them a warm welcome. They're absolutely wonderful folks, and always stock a good number of Tori boots.} Their toll-free number is (800)636-6166. Note: you won't be able to get ahold of them next week, due to their move, but you can get ahold of them now. :) Good luck with your purchase! /nad *************************************************************************** * Nadyne Mielke, CS majour, Southern Tech, Marietta, GA * * * * "I regret to say that we of the FBI are powerless to act in cases of * * oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate * * commerce. I would like to mention that the above aren't really "bootlegs". the are more like "counterfeits", and are just compilations of b-sides that are almost all easily available- ESPECIALLY "some more for pele". I would advise against buying any of these compilation type dealies, as these are the ones that truly screw tori out of money and piss off the record companies. I agree, that if you can't find if 6 was 9, etc. on the hard to get out of print singles that it isn't bad to get the compilations with that on it, but there is no excuse for getting the pele b-sides compilation as all of those singles are easily available, and most from little rarities are. "Berlin '96" has to be the best Tori bootleg I've ever heard. It's all soundboard and features some truly great performances from Tori and Caton. Only 1 CD though, and I'm not sure it was widely distributed in plates other than Europe. Well worth the find though. Worst Tori bootleg - "I Love Toffee Apples". A truely grotty audience recording from the UK leg of the UtP tour. Great music, but the sound quality's shite. It's out of print anyway. Oh, and "Ultra Rare Tori" deserves a mention too. It's got all of the YKTR album on, speeded up and distorted, but it has got such oddments such as "Ring My Bell", "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout" and "Little Drummer Boy" from various charity tapes, and some odd live versions of "Ain't No Sunshine", "A Case Of You", "Imagine" and "Sentimental Journey" which sound like they've been lifted from a video tape. Crap quality, but historically interesting, and the first chance I ever got to hear YKTR till the bootleg was rereleased in England.
