(sorry, reflex there.) i've been listening to tori since LE and ani for almost a year now (& and it's _difranco_ -i'm not picky, but she's got these obessive fans... they'll kill you.) really, ani's primary instrument is the acoustic guitar, and while she uses it in a very unconvetional way (open tunings galore and capos and just the _weirdest_ chords.) her musical style is _completely_ different from that of tori. ani's message is much more polictical, too. (tho you wouldn't know just listening to her latest "i kinda got... distracted." - sorry, inside joke.) i hate to make labels, but take indigo girls, stir in some tori, a heavy dose of bob dylan, some backbeat poetry, and sense of groove and rhythm that would make motown jealous and you have ani. sorta. _HOWEVER_ if you enjoy tori (i'm guessing you do.) you would probably like ani, too. both are strong talented womyn who have this _beautiful_ gift of music. my suggestion is to get ani's latest release, it's called "Living in Clip". it's a live double CD that is unlike any live CD you will ever hear, and it is simply incredible, sice ani is primarily a live and not studio musician. it covers a wide range of her stuff and is an excellent showcase for her talent. if you can't find "clip", grab what you can find: she's got like 9 albums now and has been recording for as many years. so, have fun! go listen, best way, y'know. you have any questions, drop me a line, i have almost all of ani's stuff. :-) noah mclaughlin: llmclaug@monumental.com narkim@hotmail.com "will we burn in heaven like we do down here?" - - sarah mclachlan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 23:07:57 -0700 From: dilbert@metro.net Subject: Tori T-shirts Burning Airlines has TONS of Tori Tees... I'm afraid the days of her even *seeing* much of her mail is a thing of the past. I remember Tom Richards of the Florida-based fan club posting to RDT sometime over the last couple years. He described what goes on with her fan mail. Almost all of it gets forwarded to the fan club, and they try to deal with it as best they can themselves. He said they only forward a tiny bit of it on to Tori herself, and they try to help people who have real life problems for which they are seeking advice. This wasn't surprising to hear, as this has been one of the traditional functions of fan clubs for a long time. > Does anyone know where I would send this to? I think the best place to send something to her is through her management. Tori Amos c/o Spivak Entertainment 11845 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite 1125 Los Angeles, CA 90064 Maybe they'll actually forward birthday cards to her. In that posting I mentioned above, Tom Richards said the fan club was beyond totally swamped, since Tori at the time had been receiving around 1,000 letters per week. You can imagine how much time it would take for her to read such an enormous volume of mail. She wouldn't have time for anything else. She needs to remain focused on writing and recording, and when it comes out, she'll be plenty busy promoting her next album and touring to support it. It has to be that way. There's only one of her. If it's any consolation to you, I know that she deeply feels all the love and affection from us. If you ever had a chance to talk with her on the tour last year or even just see her dealing with other fans, then you may have seen close up what I'm talking about. We love her, she feels it, and she loves us back. IIRC, fog machines and things like that are way more harmful to a singer than one person smoking from a few feet away. I've been onstage with fog machines and they are a pain in the ass. I don't think we need to worry about Caton's secondhand smoke. I mean, come on, Tori is a person just like you and me. If someone offends her by smoking around her, she can move or ask the person to stop, just like anyone else. - -Karen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Aug 1997 05:20:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: tori w/ a band?? Rae said: > Someone mentioned that there are rumors of tori touring w/ a band next > time. Yes, and it seems to be a pretty high-placed rumor, too. But it *is* still just a rumor. > . . i hadn't been aware of this. . . i thought she was pretty dead against > that for her shows. Hmmm. . . . I know. As recently as July of last year she was talking about liking not touring with a band. But if the rumor is true, it's probably because she was being so exhausted by the tour last year, and is thinking that having others to take some of the pressure off her will allow her to get through another tour in one piece. My own thinking on this has done a one-eighty over the past year. Previous to having spoken with her before a number of shows last year I had the thought that I wanted to let her know that I believed it would be a big mistake for her to tour with a band. Soon after forming that thought, I saw an old quote from her talking about how she doesn't crave to have a band with her on the road, etc., and figured I would be wasting precious time with her to mention it. After I heard the rumor, though, and started to see how much the tour was wearing her down on various fronts, it started to make sense to me that she would be looking out for herself if she could play larger venues with a band. A lot of people who've been seeing her live since the early days complained that she was playing in venues which were too big for their liking *last* year. A hell of a lot of people got to see her live last year in those places, but she had to put on 187 concerts to be able to do that. She was on tour from February 23 through November 11 last year. That's a show more often than every one and a half days for nearly nine months. For much of the summer she was doing seven shows a week--with two of them being on the same night! I'm sorry, but that's *insane*! Traveling around most of the tour in a bus traversing hundreds of miles in a day, one day after the other, with a small city of around 30 people on the tour with her, doing phone interviews with press on the phone a lot of the time for the town she was going to be performing in a couple weeks hence, staying in hotels of varying quality, meeting fans for a typical half hour or longer before the soundcheck in the afternoon (at least it came to be that long when she got into the summer), performing live for nearly two hours most shows, stopping to meet with fans *again* as she left the venue, then piling in the bus again so she could start it all over again the next day--a seemingly endless cycle--I don't even know when she found the time to *eat* some days! If she can figure out a way to perform before a similar number of people next time as she did last year, I say more power to her. Maybe the radio will love her next album so much that she won't *have* to support it so much through live shows, and she would be able to not have to play before as many people. It could happen. If she tours with a band next time I can't say how interested I might be in that. That's one reason why I made a point to see a lot of shows last year. But I can't imagine if she has a band with her that she won't play a set or a third or so of the concert solo, too. She knows we expect a lot from her, and she expects a lot from herself, too. I have a lot of faith in her, so I'm sure whatever she decides to do about all this will make as much sense as possible for all of us. And I'll try not to judge her decision too harshly if it seems not to make sense to me, because you know, she has much more information about why she does the things she does than *I* ever will.
