There is a strong rumor from a VERY reliable source (that I must keep anonymous) that Tori has plans to enter the studio in August to begin preliminary recording on a new album. But to be honest I have no definitive proof of this. It is simply something I find very likely. As for Tori taking a break, she is currently working on part of the soundtrack for Great Expectations, and I imagine she is actively writing as well as she stated in a few recent interviews. I will go out on a shaky limb and say that we will see a new Tori album either in February 1998, or the middle of the year! The Great Expectations Soundtrack is due in the Fall 1997...so we will indeed get new Tori music this year! I'll play along. I honestly see little point in speculating--it'll come out when it comes out regardless--but what the heck. I never understand why media cover the "horserace" aspect of elections anywhere *near* what they do in the U.S., just as I see little point to huge amounts of time spent speculating as to the potential outcome of sporting events, and that *also* seems to be quite the pasttime; but here goes nothing, anyway. Some edumacated guesses from me. :-) Michael Whitehead said: > I have nothing definite, but I would say that Tori has already written > the majority of what will appear on the next album! Well, seeing as how she was performing more than a few songs or pieces thereof on the DDI tour; either slipping them in as "stealth" songs posing as improvisations in the middle of known material, or playing them at soundchecks--yeah, you *bet* she's written most of the next album already. She needs to do mainly the arranging and organizing of it, certainly, not the composing of it. But that's no small portion of the process--it promises to be an even larger part of the process with this next album than it has since Little Earthquakes. (For different reasons, of course.) And I must say, if she can even *begin* to translate 25% of the transcendental sense of flight, and even just the sheer gorgeousness of the piece she was working on at the September 9, 1996 Boston soundcheck, folks are gonna go ga-ga over the thing when it comes out. I am familiar with more types of music than almost anyone (a hell of a statement to make, but I'm not bragging when I say that), and I *never* heard anything like the soundcheck material that day in Boston. She played for what must have been about twenty minutes or more, stopping only like twice for mere seconds to catch her breath, then starting up again right where she'd left off. As*ton*ishing. It was like she was Peter Pan and we were Wendy and *BAM*!--off we went together, fast and furious. It was, to quote the late, great Frank Zappa, "beyond audience comprehension." It was spacey in some ways, but full of rolling, intertwined melody: and on the Bosendorfer, it came in great crashing waves all over the lot of us standing there outside the tent as we wallowed in it. Ten seconds of that stuff and I was reminded, "Oh yeah--*this* is why I drove 450 miles for one more concert." > There is a strong rumor from a VERY reliable source (that I must keep > anonymous) that Tori has plans to enter the studio in August to begin > preliminary recording on a new album. And if she goes into the studio then, she'll be somewhere between five and seven months behind the time in 1995 when she first went into the studio. So, all other things being equal (which we have no way of knowing anything about one way or the other), then that puts her on a release schedule of somewhere between June and August of 1998. What's more likely in terms of the more desireable time of year to release an album? June, in time for the summer? What about the tour schedule? She's supposedly to have a band on tour with her next time--are they gonna want to *begin* a tour in June? Perhaps. They may be booked into larger summer venues. I hope to heck she doesn't do a ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY-SEVEN date tour next time! It's more strain on her than is healthy. I think she got the message loud and clear on that during the DDI tour. She's *got* to play larger venues next time, or risk her health even more than she did this last time out. Surely, she's one of the most purely ambitious musicians in the business today. She's not fooling around--she wants her music to be heard! With nearly zilch radio support as has come to be the norm with the release of her albums, she has to get her music heard one way or another. Plus, she *wants* to play for us--she knows it means a lot to us, and it means a great deal to her to be able to commune with us on tour. I mean that on different levels. And I've heard a number of people who saw up around ten shows or more on the DDI tour saying that they were planning to see even *more* shows next time out--somehow; anyhow. She has too much of a road constituency and is too aware of that to abandon us on a tour, so I wouldn't expect a mere handful of shows. Plus, she's a self-professed road dog. So, I'm expecting between, say, seventy-five and a hundred shows in larger venues (around the world, hopefully), with the band to help take some of the strain off her in an overall manner; and, not coincidentally, take some of the strain off of her wrist and vocal chords. (I'm not planning to go into detail about the vocal chord thing. I already spoke a number of months ago about the wrist thing. She needs to watch herself, though. Let's just leave it at that for now.) And no harpsichord. Do many of you have any idea how difficult it is to keep a *new* harpsichord in any semblance of tune--let alone a 200-year-old one--even when *not* schlepping it all around to high heaven? I'd expect her to do between 40% and 50% of each concert solo, and the rest of the show with the band. Roughly. (Hey, why not go far out on a limb while idly speculating?) :-) > I will go out on a shaky limb and say that we will see a new Tori album > either in February 1998, or the middle of the year! I'm not expecting February unless the great Fairy Godmother of Mixdowns lands in her production studio to help her out. But that could happen. :-) That woman does nothing but proffer one surprise after the other--always. That's part of why she's completely fascinating, and why we think about and discuss her endlessly--some of us for what seem to be many years, now. > The Great Expectations Soundtrack is due in the Fall 1997...so we will > indeed get new Tori music this year! And I think that's a *marvelous* preparation for her to be able to produce a much bigger-sounding album next time. This soundtrack thing is just what she needed. I'm hoping it will be a true collaborative effort along the lines of the Paul McCartney/Carl Davis Oratorio from 1991. (Davis is a reknown composer of scores for film and television, with a strong accent over the past decade or so on reworking scores for so-called "silent" film. He's an American expatriate living in London.) If she can get some pointers on the larger ensemble thing through doing this soundtrack, that's a wonderful thing. I know she's craving it. At the start of the DDI tour I was dead set against her ever touring with a band. She said as recently as last July in the Vancouver weekly newspaper The Georgia Straight, dated July 18: "There isn't a moment when I regret not having a band," she says. "I never turn around and say, 'Hey, where's the drummer?' I really like the improvisational aspect, and it keeps it interesting for me. People sense when something's stale. That's why I change the show every night." But I came to see that it has to be that way. I know lots of folks who've been following her since the Little Earthquakes era already feel that the whole tour thing with her has lost more than a little something. But, from what I can tell, she's playing better, writing better, and tuning in to the audience better than she ever has. It'll be okay. She'll *make* it be okay. I completely trust her sensibilities. There you go. Anyone else? Have fun with it. God, it's been a late night at work for me. And now I've rambled like a total idiot, I'm sure. I'm sending this anyway, then going home. Or at least to Starbucks. ;-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. I got the impression that she was doing the WHOLE THING (and with a full orchestra too) but I don't know if all the tracks will be instrumentals or not. The movie and soundtrack are due out by the end of the summer. Someone posted about the release of the Unplugged album a few weeks ago(was it out?) and I have one. Because of the less than perfect sound quality however, I wonder if what I have is a bootleg. It is copyright 1996 by D2P Inc. (Dedicated to Perfection). The CD is titled Unplugged and Unreleased and above the track list it declares "Recorded Live MTV". The track list is as follows: 1. Cornflake Girl 2. Blood Roses 3. Silent All These Years 4. Icicle 5. Caught A Light Sneeze 6. Somewhere Over the Rainbow 7. Hey Jupiter 8. Voodoo BONUS TRACKS 9. Little Drummer Boy (radio promo) 10. Winter (percussion mix) 11. Happy Phantom (out take) 12. I don't know if any are legitimate recordings or if they're all bootlegs, but here's what I've seen: "Unplugged Girl"- can't tell you much about it, but that was the name and I remember that the tracks seemed consistent with the show. I don't remember any bonus tracks, but it's been a while since I've seen it, so it could just be my memory that's fuzzy. I also saw another disc that I think was just called "Tori Amos: Unplugged". I didn't look too closely at it, but I think (THINK!!!! I could be wrong, it's been known to happen!) it had a full body shot of her on the cover (it might have just been a face shot), and the typical post BfP style of title (you know in the little boxes along the line on the far right of the cover). Anyway, I could be wrong about these, but I think that's what I've seen. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
