RAINN DAY On April 29 the United States Congress declared Friday, May 16 to be "RAINN Day". RAINN is the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network founded by Tori. The goal of this day is to raise awareness of the work being done by the non-profit organization on behalf of victims of sexual assault. Hundreds of US television and radio stations have been asked to interrupt their broadcasts at noon (local time) to play a pre-recorded public service announcement by Tori. This message includes information about RAINN and will be followed by her song "Silent All These Years". You can get more information at the RAINN web site - http://www.rainn.org I don't know why they've chosen "Silent All These Years" rather than "Me And A Gun". And, as far as we know, Tori will not be making any special appearances anywhere in conjunction with the event. GOING AWAY FOR THE SUMMER? Hey all-- Here's an interesting tidbit of info for you all: My dorm was putting on a "Guess The Straight Person" program tonight. Basically it was a mock game show where gay/lesbian, straight, and bisexual volunteers were asked questions and then the audience guessed who was what orientation. Being bisexual myself, I volunteered. At the end of the program, when people had finished voting, I was UNANIMOUSLY voted (16 out of 16) bi. A lot of people there already knew about me, but when I asked the others what made them think I was bi, they said that it was my response to the "what is your favorite music" question. I had replied "if you guys don't know that Tori Amos is my favorite (I'm pretty well known around here for that), where have you been? I also like NIN and the Indigo Girls." Anyway, at the end of the program they said that it was my enthusiasm about Tori that gave me away! How about that! I've been listening to Tori for a couple of years now and only came out to MYSELF about a month ago! I find it weird yet interesting how Tori got to be equated with bisexuality. Please write back with any comments/insight! Last week, I left a phone message for the editors at RDT Fanzine letting them know that fans were talking about taking drastic steps and asking them to please say something on their Web page that might calm people down. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but they've done just that (thanks to Greg Burrell for letting me know about it). :) I have always been completely happy with Missy and Richard, and even when they've been behind, they have ALWAYS come through with my stuff in the end. I tried to defend them on this whenever I could. Now, they are speaking for themselves....... An Open Letter to Tori's Fans As you can see from our beautiful new web site, reports of our death are highly exaggerated! Many thanks to Ray Caramanna, a true friend and supporter who did all of the graphics and much of the work putting this new site together. We'd like to take this opportunity to address some of the questions that have been circulating about RDT and to explain our current situation and future plans. Please feel free to circulate this information wherever you feel appropriate. The Problem When we started Really Deep Thoughts five years ago, we really thought we knew what we were getting into. We had seen fanzines and fan clubs for other artists stagger along or fade away. We didn't want to fall into that same trap. Our theory was simple: concentrate on the fanzine and don't get distracted by anything else. We weren't going to do membership kits, merchandise, or secret decoder rings - just the fanzine. Well, that worked for a while. Of course we got started on the Internet, so we always wanted to have a presence there. And we wanted to keep you as up to date as possible, so we tried to send out updates whenever news warranted. For those who wanted the very latest news, but didn't have an Internet connection we offered a telephone news line. Then there were those great Tori books from Music Sales that nobody could find so we started offering those. Then there were posters and pendents and T-shirts and so on. We did a pretty good job of keeping up with all that for a while. But as Tori's popularity grew and our own free time became more limited, we fell more and more behind. We just could not keep up with all the demands. We won't go into all the details. That would sound too much like we're making excuses. The bottom line is that right now we're not providing Tori or her fans with the kind of fanzine they deserve. The Solution, or So We Thought We thought we had some ideas on how to fix that at the end of last year. We got help sending out subscription forms, and we got Ray Caramanna and Greg Burrell to help with page layout and news editing respectively. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Ray and Greg did everything we asked of them. Which wasn't nearly enough, as it turned out. We didn't give them enough autonomy. They couldn't do much but wait for us to come through with material to do something with. Meanwhile, sending out more subscription forms had brought in even more subscription requests. Which would have been great except that we didn't have any time to deal with them because we were busy with merchandise orders. So somehow we managed to go from trying to stay focused on the fanzine to not being able to get anything done with it because we're so busy with all the peripheral things we were doing. Obviously something needs to change, and that's us. A New Plan We've always done as much of the fanzine work as possible, because we love doing it. But the only way to do all, or even most, of the work with something like this is to base your whole life around it. We did that for a long time, but nobody can do it forever. Some people try, but that's why so many fanzines disappear. We now believe that the only way to get this back on track and make it work for the long term is to reduce the fanzine into a set of tasks that can be handled by people with lives outside the fanzine and find the right people to handle those tasks. Breaking out the graphics and news editor jobs was a start, but we need to give those editors more to do and allow them to do it. But it will take more than that to get us back on course. We need to make a major change in the way we approach the fanzine. We can't continue to approach it as one or two people with occasional help from a few others. We need to approach it as a team dedicated to producing the kind of fanzine we set out to do in the first place. In order to make that happen we have decided that we will find someone to take over as editor of RDT by the end of 1997. That doesn't mean we're getting out of the fanzine. It just means that we will be concentrate our efforts on the job of publishing the fanzine, which is more than enough work for two people. This wasn't an easy decision. Coming up with content for the fanzine and putting it together is a lot more fun than licking stamps and updating databases, but we're not getting that job done right now anyway, so it's time to let someone else take the reigns for a while. Full details on the editor's job will be available soon. Please hold all correspondence about the editor's job until we post details on what will be involved and how to apply for the job if you are interested. Unfinished Business We're happy to report that as of this week we have one big hurdle behind us. We have mailed the last of our outstanding merchandise orders, including refunds for those who have requested them. If you do not have your merchandise within ten days please send us email so we can check your status. Please be sure to include your full name and address. We still have a lot of subscription requests oustanding. We are going to keep those on hold while we concentrate on finishing our 11th issue. Issue ten is old enough that we feel most people would consider it a rip-off to get that as their first issue. Speaking of rip-offs, we're very sorry to see that some fans have applied that term to our efforts. We can understand how some might arrive at that opinion, given our slug-like progress of late, but please know that we do everything we can to be as fair as possible to the fans we try to serve. As a rule, we do not deposit funds until we are ready to send something. In cases were people have complained that we have cashed their checks and not sent them anything, we usually find that we really haven't cashed their check at all. Yes, we've been slow and we do make mistake sometimes, but the fanzine has it's own account, so none of that benefits us in any way. When we do make mistakes, we do our best to correct them as quickly as possible. Wrapping Up We hope this has helped to clear up where we're at and where we're going. Over the next few weeks we'll provide more information to help clean up the loose ends. We welcome your feedback, but please know that our priorities will be on fixing serious problems and working on the new issue, so we may be slow in responding to other questions. Finally, we would like to thank all of you who have been patient and supportive through all of this. We couldn't do it without you. Sincerely, Missy & Richard Caldwell Thank goodness they're still around. :) They also mention on the site that the Lilith Faire, which is being organized by Sarah MacLachlan to promote female artists, "has chosen RAINN as one of its two featured charities (the other is LifeBeat, which does great work on the AIDS issue)." John Stewart has repeatedly said that mentions of other artists ARE allowed here on ToriNews if they pertain to Tori in a valid way. Common sense. When someone uses space here for snide comments like, "Well, then should we talk about Trent?" please respond to them PRIVATELY instead of feeding into what they've just been guilty of. John trusts us to use good judgement here, which is why he does not moderate this list. Please don't abuse that trust. He shouldn't have to babysit us. RAINN Day is tomorrow, remember.
