I'm finally on a bit of a break from work, so since no one else has responded yet, here you are. (I feel more than a little bit like the kid in class who raises his hand all the time, but oh, well.) This is very emotional for me. Thank you, Tori. We love you. Richard Handal, H.G. XOXOXOXO <>====<>====<>====<>====<>====<>====<>====<>====<>====<> http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/97/04/29/y0010_y00_6.html Tuesday April 29 3:00 PM EDT RAINN Day set for May 16 Radio/TV to combat sex assault with "Call to Action" WASHINGTON--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--April 29, 1997-- -- Noon broadcasts part of nationwide awareness campaign -- From inside the U.S. Capitol, it was announced today that May 16th will be the first-ever RAINN Day. This nationwide "call to action" will dramatically raise awareness of the work being done by the non-profit organization on behalf of victims of sexual assault. Hundreds of radio stations and television outlets have been asked to interrupt their regular programming at noon (local time) that Friday to play a request that could save a life. National cable outlets MTV and VH1 have already confirmed their participation and support. Stations that answer the call will play a public service announcement from Atlantic recording artist and RAINN co-founder, Tori Amos. The specially recorded PSA will include information about RAINN, which operates America's only national hotline for sexual assault victims. The toll-free, 24-hour number is 1-800-656-HOPE. Amos' message will be followed by her song, the poignant "Silent All These Years," originally found on her "Little Earthquakes" debut album. It was the lyrics to "Silent All These Years" that, in so profoundly moving those in Tori's audience confronting issues of abuse, prompted the artist to launch RAINN. For that reason, "Silent All These Years" has served as the musical touchstone for the RAINN mission. The PSA & song, made available together on a promotional CD, will be shipped May 2nd to radio stations across the country; a video version will be made available for television on May 14th via satellite. RAINN Day was announced today at a press conference in the U.S. Capitol by Reps. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) and Darlene Hooley (D-OR). The announcement was followed by a reception in honor of RAINN; the Honorary Chairs of the reception were Rep. Molinari and Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD). Among the 35 Honorary Co-Chairs honoring RAINN are Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX), House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO), and Rep. Vic Fazio (D-CA). Initial funding for RAINN was provided by the Atlantic Group and Warner Music Group. In January, cK Calvin Klein launched "Unlock The Silence," a yearlong promotional fundraising and advertising campaign on behalf of RAINN. Additional support has been provided by NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences), MCI and the Jacobs Family Foundation. RAINN receives no government funding. Every two minutes, someone is sexually assaulted in the U.S. Only 32% of these attacks are reported to the police. The aim of RAINN is to change that reality. Since it was established in July, 1994, RAINN -- which automatically and confidentially connects callers to the rape crisis center closest to them -- has aided over 142,000 survivors of sexual abuse. 628 rape crisis centers nationwide are now part of the RAINN network. RAINN is based in Washington, DC. RAINN's Board of Directors is made up of a cross-section of business people, experienced non-profit organizers, and counseling professionals with a background in sexual assault issues. Tori Amos chairs the RAINN Advisory Board, which includes Representative Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.), Calvin Klein, and Atlantic Senior Vice President Vicky Germaise. The song you're describing is "Fire on the Side". It's from the Y Kant Troi Read album. I'm surprised she did that in concert. I've only heard of her doing Etienne or Cool on Your Island. Anyway, I've got a copy of the album. This was one of the Girls that really confused me (like most of BfP) until I was able to really relate to what Tori was singing about. BfP is about finding your own fire, as Tori said, she was trying to steal fire from the men in her life. I found myself doing the same thing with the women in my life. I thought if I was constantly in love, I'd be happy. Well, as the saying goes, "you can't love anyone until you love yourself." The thing that turned it all around for me was discovering my bisexuality (2 weeks ago today!). It's not that I found out I had twice as many people to steal fire from, it's that I began to see myself for who I was and I really did start to love myself (ie I found my own fire). That's when Doughnut Song made sense. For me, the chorus was really where it came together: "You've been wasting my time, this time" (OK this one's obvious) "Said you never learned to take" Tori is speaking to her men saying, "Look. I've been trying to give you all I am, and I just want you to take it but you won't!" Next, "and if I'm hanging on to your shade I guess I'm way beyond the pale." This is Tori's realization that she doesn't need whoever this guy is. He's pulling her down but she's holding on and therefore allowing herself to be pulled down (hanging on to your shade). She realizes if she's getting pulled down and allowing it, she's already dead (pale). In fact, she's more than dead since she's still alive (if that one made any sense!) which is why she's WAY BEYOND the pale. That's my take on it. I could be wrong, it's been known to happen. Peace, Love, and the Goddess-- Mark "Butterfly, they like you better framed and dry..." -Tori Amos "I'll cross my heart, I'll hope to die but the needle's already in my eye." -Trent Reznor "If you lie to yourself about your own pain, you will be killed by those who will claim you enjoyed it." -Alice Walker ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 16:47:32 -0700 From: Chloe Sparkle Subject: Album Art Specifically, Boys for Pele. OK, I've heard everyone and their mother talk about the pig picture inside, but what about the pig picture on the back of the album? On the front of the album, you see Tori, rifle in hand, with death, the cock, on her left and life, the snake, under her on the right. My take is that the front symbolizes Tori about to take control of her own life, about to find her own fire. MAybe she is so mad at herself that she couldn't find her woman's worth until now that she is sriking out violently, thus the rifle. But then comes the back of the album. The snakes are still there, but the dead cock is gone and she's holding a pig. So I think Tori has come to terms with her life, found the nutruring aspect of herself, and is on the path of healing. But the one thing I haven't found meaning for is the children pressed up against the window. Is it because it's the back of the album, the children is the house are the songs contained inside? I'd looooove to hear everyone else's ideas on this pictures. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 19:07:27 -0500 From: Starbucky Subject: Re: Album Art The pic on the back of BfP DOES have the cocks on it, they are just cut out. She has her life back and the gun is gone and we watch/listen, constantly trying to get in closer, to her and anything she will let us see/hear which being that it is Tori is quite a bit. Up till Doughnut song, on my first listening to BfP, I knew I liked the album, but nothing had quite hit me as hard emotionally as in LE. But when Doughnut Song came on, these unexplainable tears just started welling up. a side note on the "breakup song" theme, also - doughnut song is about the same length through the album as "cloud on my tongue" on UtP and "Tear in Your Hand" on LE, and I always associate them all together as the three "breakup songs". so, here's the lyrics, interespersed with my comments: (sorry, typing them in gets me more in the right frame of mind to write about them..) hand me a trick and a kick and your message - --> "a kick" - kick me out the door, leave me a note well you'll never gain weight from a doughnut hole - --> this comes from someone else, i've forgotten who now, but a doughnut hole is empty, and the analogy is to an empty relationship she wasn't getting any "weight" out of anyway. then thought that I could decipher your message there's no one here dear no one at all - ---> i understand, there's nothing left in this now... and if I'm wasting all your time this time maybe you never learned to take - ---> i'm not wasting your time wanting to be with you, you just don't know how to get anything out of it... and if I'm hanging on to your shade I guess I'm way beyond the pale - ---> i'm having a hard time letting go of you, i guess you're telling me that means i'm a little crazy, etc and southern men can grow gold can grow pertty blood can be pertty like a delicate man copper to steel to a hinge that is faltered that let's you in let's you in let's you in something's just keeping you numb - -->i don't really know about the southern men part.. maybe a more specific reference than i can figure out?) the broken hinge seems to be saying "you let me in, even if you didn't mean to... but now you say you don't feel it too.. you told me last night you were a sun now with your very own devoted satellite happy for you and I am sure that I hate you two sons too many too many able fires - --> this part is obvious to me, at least... you've found someone else to hang around you instead of me, and i feel torn about it... and if I'm wasting all your time this time maybe you never learned to take and if I'm hanging on to your shade I guess I'm way beyond the pale - --> in the song, I think that the second time around, there's also a line that says "maybe you're wasting all *my* time, this time" which makes me think that the realization is dawning, she's ready to accept that it's over and it hasn't been good for her, either... just my thoughts. i'm glad to see discussion happening about song interpretations again. - -abbe ps: on another thread, I also remember nocturne's page being the first tori page on the web, but back then there weren't really any search engines, so it's hard to be sure. plus I knew him personally, so it's certainly the first one *I* found. :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 20:46:33 EST From: "so much more than everything..." Subject: Doughnut SOng perhaps not breakup song, per se, but an ending song.... i wne through a big change in january, and left someone behind, and i remember her crying to me in her room saying that she never knew me...and lyrics started going through my head the thing is...she never took the TIME to know me, she only talked about herselfand created the "me" that she wanted to talk to, thus "and if i'm wasting all your time this time, i guess you never learned to take" i think it's a realisation from afterwards, that the two never knew each other, or that the one never knew the other "hand me a trick and a kick and your message, you'll never gain weight from a doughnut hole" - -- i thought that was more of an example of discourse, ie: what was said when the relationship "ended" - they used to talk and now he's just saying that afterwards (or SHE'S saying - meaning Tori) that the other won't be carrying any baggage around "copper to steel, to a hinge that is faltered, but lets you in" - -- copper is a natural metal - and what pennies are made out of, steel was a man made material and was prevelent in the north during the industrial revolution in the united states (thus the southern men reference) and copper grows a protective layer when they get old thus: "and southern men can grow old can grow pretty" and i agree with what was said about the hinge... that the two sides tried to come together to make something equal, but what happened is that one entered the other's space -- you might be a general term here "and if i'm hanging on to your shade, maybe i'm way beyond the pale" - -- she's only seen one side of him (ie: the shadow, just as a side) and she's overestimated him in things that he could do or would have done for her.... i think that's it jordan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 21:51:03 -0500 (EST) From: Charlie Poole Subject: Re: album art Hi All, On Wed, 30 Apr 1997, Lanna Chidester wrote: > I personally think that the kids pressed to the window on the back of BfP > are us- the fans- watching her pull her life back together through the > songs therin contained. I believe that the children represent the songs because Tori has so often referred to her songs as her children and never knowing, before a performance, which one of the girls will come out to play. Richard, raise your hand again and give us the definitive opinion. Lanna, thanks for your post. As many times as I've looked at the photos on the BfP CD insert the children's faces at the window never registered. I feel soooo negligent and unobservant.
