The reason woj and I established this list was to give people a more focused (and therefore lower volume) alternative to the already established really-deep-thoughts (rdt) mailing list. My name`s Lisa, I`m 18 and I live in Norway. I`m extremely new to this list.. I`ve been a fan of Tori`s since I was twelve, first song I heard was "Winter" and I remember thinking ; "Yes! That`s it! That`s what I`m gonna do!" Taking up piano, that is..Needless to say, my musical career bombed completely because of lack of practice..but oh, well..at least I had discovered one of the greatest artists in the world. Tori has done a lot for me trough the years; her music has gotten me trough some pretty rough times, she has inspired me to write and to sing, and she even introduced me to my favorite comic book series, the Sandman, which I am addicted to.. Now, I know this isn`t an e-mail exchange program or anything, but I would really like to hear from some people out there, who share my musical interests..or just feel like writing a couple a words.. Besides Tori, I like a lot of "girlsingers" like Ani DiFranco, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Chantal Kreviazuk etc.etc, NIN, Garbage, the Cure, David Bowie, Scheer and a whole bunch of others. Well, then. I`ll continue enjoying the list and I hope to hear from some of you soon! Oh, and Jodi; how can I subscribe to the Ani DiFranco-list??? I just wondered if anyone had any tapes of Tori-shows that they want to distribute to a Nordic fan?? I don`t have much to trade with, but if we can`t think of anything you would have in return, I can pay you. What do you say? I would be interested in receiving anything, especially since I`ve never had the pleasure of experiencing Tori live. Kind regards, Lisa G, Tori-phile in Norway "Go on girls; solo!" I think it sums up the idea of a "woman with experience" - I killed a man - code for the hard life, but also that we're all together ( women are maybe all together?) - all watching the same star... I think Twinkle would have made a great b-side along with alamo (heard that the stars were in order..) - if that's how it goes. Notice that on the cover of BFP, Tori kinda looks like the girl from Thelma and Louise (the red head i forget her name) - and that movie was also the muse that got her to write MAAG - so I basically think there are relations here - I can't quite peg it. - --- A tangent. Songs like "till the chicken" to me are like kitchen songs. If you guys have seen the orange book, it really compliments the cd booklet, and (to me) gives the impression of a town. This woman living in the west - - in her house, feeding her pig, out at the local gas station, out in her carriage/car, out at the back of her house, kneeling on that old mattress - - the cows in her background. The cow shot must be the back yard of her old house. So when you hear songs like "till the chicken" or that's what I like, it kind of makes me feel like she's baking bread, or taking a break from what ever's happening in life, and is just lounging about in a relaxed and happy way. Maybe Mr. Zebra is a primer for these sorts of ideas. Maybe BFP is like walking into a town, learning the town, and listening to her songs, discovering what is hidden in the wood. It's too bad the orange book wasn't sold along with the cd. It would have cleared a lot of things up. jen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Apr 1997 10:38:15 -0400 (EDT) From: jennifer Subject: Twinkle I get a bit of the "Thelma and Louise" vibes from this song. I've just recently finished reading a book about Marilyn Monroe and in this book is a short telegram that Marilyn sent to Robert Kennedy and his wife. It read: DEAR ATTORNEY GENERAL AND MRS. ROBERT KENNEDY: I WOULD HAVE BEEN DELIGHTED TO HAVE ACCEPTED YOUR INVITATION HONORING PAT AND PETER LAWFORD. UNFORTUNATELY I AM INVOLVED IN A FREEDOM RIDE PROTESTING THE LOSS OF THE MINORITY RIGHTS BELONGING TO THE FEW REMAINING EARTHBOUND STARS. AFTER ALL, ALL WE DEMANDED WAS OUR RIGHT TO TWINKLE. When I saw Tori last September, it was on the evening of the eclipse and she put a picture of one up while playing the song. She's magically delicious! As to my interpretation of the song, well, here it goes: I think I agree with the person that said that it goes back to the days of having to play "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and all of that good stuff. To add a little bit more, although it may be reading into the lines too much, I think that it is a perfect resolution to the trilogy that was talked about. She talks about a "boy so hard" but says "But I know a girl twice as hard", which could mean that she's moving on to a new stage in her life where boys shouldn't matter so much . . . namely Eric. With "I Killed a man T", that could also mean ending the obsession with me. It also could be an abbreviation for a manatee . . . maybe. I can't explain that. "Twinkle" is a beautiful song and a gorgeous finale. bye. becky ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Apr 1997 23:51:15 EST From: greeting the monster in our easter dresses Subject: twinkle twinkle little star, how i wonder what you are... just kinda hanging out, doing too much work and was listening to tori when i saw this thread....cool.. my roommate (and model for most of my photographs) says that Twinkle is the best song to listen to when you're lying in bed looking out the window at a tree, and i said when you're falling asleep in a town where you know no one and you're watching the rain on yr windowpane but i think that it is about her finally passing on beyond what she had kidded herself into being - attatched - i dunno, she said in the interviews that it was all about her going through bad relationships with men (all the others after eric) -- which is her Pretty Hate Machine -- and about knowing a girl twice as hard, that she's been through as much as the strongest man what the part about killing a man is, i dunno...maybe a reference to someone she met in Iona (hell, it could happen) or a reference that women can take over can be stronger than most - i dunno this is depressing me, i gotta go jordan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Apr 1997 21:48:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Richard Holmes Subject: Re: tori hate page Jeannie Cook writes: > man...the girl who made that page is seriously bitter. most of > my friends dislike tori...and i usually find the reason for > that dislike is they (esp females) are uncomfortable with her > "rawness" and her honesty. women in society are taught to > conceal their emotions, sexuality, and just about everything > else. and tori rejects all of that. Yeah, but what's weird is I like a *lot* of the other female bands she has on her women & music page. But some of the other stuff she says (like "I like to kick puppies" & her big animal rights stuff...) make me wonder what she's up to. I think she was abused as a child (some of the stuff on child abuse, and her own writings), which could explain a lot of her hostility. I plan not to even check it out even just to look at it. I'm sure she gets an enormous kick when she gets the stats for how many times her website has been visited. From the interest I've seen as exemplified by the talk on this mailing list alone, if this amount of interest is anything like an accurate barometer of the interest of Tori fans *not* on this list, she must be getting more hits on her website than most of the *real* Tori websites! Incredible! Look at this--even by complaining that people are discussing it, now *I'm* discussing it! How awful! She must be sitting back from her computer screen and reading all the messages people send her, counting all the hits generated by her site and totally laughing herself silly! This girl could go into marketing--if she isn't already. My goodness. :-/ I bought the recently published Tori Amos Collectibles book Saturday night, and I have a ton of comments on it. Might take me a few days to get them all together and post them, but at least that will be relevant. I'm not complaining about the wasted time and space here discussing that website, but I couldn't sit here and read this any longer without mentioning how incredibly bizarre I find all this attention she has so easily generated for herself by making that website. It's like catching fish in a barrel. Let her have her freedom of speech in a nice little vacuum I say, and she'll wither on the vine.
