I basically agree with your post, Charlie, but feel the need to make one important amendment. Two words--Judy Garland. It's funny that I had not consciously made a connection between Tori and Judy G. until reading Missy Caldwell's wonderful ediTORIal in issue #10 of the RDT fanzine. (I always said my three favorite female vocalists were Judy Garland, Rosemary Clooney, and Lydia Lunch.) Missy quoted at length from a Judy G. review, and one could have very easily thought the review was of a Tori show. I have since been somewhat concerned from time to time that Tori might burn herself out with similar speed. (Judy died quite young--I believe she was 44 or 46.) I certainly hope not. BTW, Judy's 1963 double album of a live performance at Carnegie Hall is one of the most personally connected and emotional records ever made. I suggest it highly to anyone. The emotion will absolutely *drip* from your speakers. Both from Judy herself as well as from the audience. Judy wasn't nearly as technically capable of a singer as Tori is, but the emotion is powerful. For me, though, Tori simply compounds it by not only being better technically as a vocalist than Judy was, but by her near virtuosic pianism. And then there's her composing.... It's possible that a few other women musicians before Tori have elicited such screams as well, Joan Jett comes to mind. I never attended a Joan Jett concert so I can't tell you for sure. But I know that some of her fans have been known to get rather boisterous, too. (I always thought it was hilarious that Joan went to high school two miles east of where I grew up, and Tori went to high school about six or eight miles northwest. Something in the Montgomery County, Maryland water?) But Judy's fans were the only ones who, so far as I am aware, ever came close to expressing the adulation that Tori's fans do for her. > This may be the price of fame and maybe we should be thankful that it's > Tori who is eliciting this response. Amen. > > (sorry for the long post...) > > Megan, please don't apologize for a very interesting post that really > wasn't very long. :-) Ditto from me. :-) Love you madly, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Mar 1997 02:50:22 -0500 (EST) From: Traumachik@aol.com Subject: Judy G., Tori, and fandom Tori burn out as quickly as Judy Garland? I'd like to think not! Bear in mind the condition Judy was in at the time of her death, as a speed-freak trapped in an unhappy marriage (if I remember correctly). Tori seems to have a handle on who she is and where she's going in a way Judy didn't. So I don't think that's as much of an issue. The "Screaming" thread is making me think a bit about my definition of fandom, and how I identify it and such. To me, a "fan" in the truest sense is a person who takes in what an artist does without putting that feeling into something else. (The "something else" doesn't have to be artistic, btw.) But how do you define giving back? Tori fans make me think this even more than any other fan group, because so much of what happens with her depends on the fans. Reading about the ToriCon in one of the newsgroups didn't give me any info about what you could find there, though I heard much about the personal habits of the people who attended (not that there's anything wrong with that). There's also the somewhat off-putting thought of the First International Church of Tori, or someone I used to know that erected a shrine to Tori in their bedroom. I'm not trying to judge these people, because my belief is that you should make yourself happy and not hurt anyone else, but I did want to put my ideas out there and find out what everyone else thought of fandom. Thoughts, folks. - --Chelsea ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Mar 1997 03:23:00 -0500 (EST) From: Coyote42@aol.com Subject: Re: Obnoxious Screaming Fans Bob wrote > Some people are obviously obnoxious, but the concert wouldn't be same if > we all quietly sat and politely clapped. I believe the screaming in the middle of the song is VERY rude, especially if you're sitting next to the person doing it. But at the end of the song, that is when you should go crazy and as the first note starts agian or if she starts talking, shut-up and listen. I do not know how many times I have missed her sTories because someone had to scream "I love you MYRA" . How rude. Thanks. I've never heard about any controversy over Here. In my Head, and Tori's never told why she got into trouble over Sugar, or with whom she got in trouble, as far as i know, but my guess would be that her boyfriend got mad at her because of the song's content, which is about meeting someone you know you'll never spend a great amount of time with, but just knowing that you'd have a wonderful affair with them if you had about 25 minutes. Of course, this is just my guess, and no one should take it too seriously, because i could be completely wrong. But wouldn't most people be a little jealous if their girl/boyfriend wrote a song about wanting to sleep with someone else? I would. -=-laurie ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :: He opened up the roof with a shotgun blast :: :: Uncle Frederick's farm :: :: He gave us all a twelve gauge view of the big blue moon :: :: -=-Over the Rhine :: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Mar 1997 13:01:33 -0500 (EST) From: Delirium Subject: RAINN ads- the writing on Tori's hand You can make it out on the SATY single as well... turn the picture upside down... it says "salem" right above her thumb and "paper ice cream" above that... Exactly. The photo is from 1997, but the copyright says 1977! (That's a difference of 20 years, which is hardly correct.) "I'm a New Yorker.
