Ya, I am on couple lists where people have specifacally made reference to the "screaming teeny-boppers" at Tori concerts. It gets sorta embarassing, too, because everyone points fingers at me. Hey, I fit the description: Teenage girl who loves Tori... I must be one of those uncontrolable screaming children at the concerts! No way. And why is it only at Tori concerts where this scenario is so typical? Of all the concerts I have ever attended, I have seen very excited and adrenyline-pumped fans, but they dont constantly interupt the singer. Maybe because Tori is someone who really communicates and appreciates her fans... and they know it! I really respect anyone who is a honest fan of Tori's music because I think they have an understanding genuine to only certain and special people. I give all these people credit. (That would include all of you.) But why are they not smart enough to (puh-lease) keep their mouth shut so we all can listen to her sing? I sit in stadiums and music halls and I wonder, "Who let these people in here?" To anyone who may be a "new" fan or not that I think its very aggrevating to take liberty to profess their love to Tori (or any artist for that matter) by screaming out during songs or when the artist is talking. There are other ways. I have to admit that even I have felt a srtrong inclination to scream out at concerts... but no, I restrain myself. :) Sorry I was pretty much babbling. I wanted to say something about this during the BFP tour, anyway. ~Kimmy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Mar 1997 21:52:09 -0500 From: Bob Moyer Subject: Tori Screams On the other hand, when not excessive, the screams you hear tend to open the dialogue up between Tori and the audience. One of the most incredible things I've ever heard at a Tori concert was at Constitution Hall when someone yelled "WE BELIEVE IN YOU, TORI!" She then whispered back, "I believe in you, too." Some people are obviously obnoxious, but the concert wouldn't be same if we all quietly sat and politely clapped. - -- -Bob rahvin@wam.umd.edu http://horatio.dorm.umd.edu *)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*) "if i could start again a million miles away i would keep myself i would find away." -Nine Inch Nails ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 22:04:03 -0500 (EST) From: Delirium Subject: Re: here in my head Sometimes I think there should be a pamphlet on "how to behave" or something like that passed out at Tori shows... with tips like "Don't throw things at Tori, Don't yell out a request when she is telling a story..." Alot of these "kids" are accustomed to attending shows where people yell and scream. HOWEVER that is just not appropriate when seeing Tori Amos... its one thing to applaud a song or yell "THANK-YOU!" if she played your request... but it seems like these "kids" yell just to be heard. At a concert in Tampa (the first one of the us ddi tour), she stopped after the first verse of Crucify because people were screaming during the song. She started screaming (mockingly) and said that she was excited, too... That she wanted to take us on the ride of our lives. It took a minute for the audience to calm down, and when we could tell that she was getting pissed, the audience hushed some maniac EWF's who were still screaming. She said, "Let me sing for you tonite," and then started into "Losing my Religion". It seemed kind of awkward for a performer to have to hush the audience. It also seemed weird that she stopped right in the middle of a song because people were too loud. (Has Tori done this anywhere else?) She apologized later for giving us a hard time and explained that she likes to get excited with us, but during the songs she needs to hear what she's doing because if not, "then I fuck up, I look stupid, and then you get bummed out". [sTORI snipped] > (Has Tori done this anywhere else?) Yes, she has but not so forcefully. The screaming is so loud, especially at the beginning of her concert, that she does have trouble hearing what she's playing. I understand the adulation coupled with the excitement of "Oh my god, it's really her and she's really going to play." Nevertheless, it is very annoying to those who came to the concert to *actually* hear Tori sing and play. For many concert goers seeing the performer(s) live is more important than hearing the music; after all they've heard the album. With Tori, however, each concert is different, each piece is played a little differently, and each song is sung with some variation. Like all people, Tori's girls come to the stage in different moods each performance. To many of us that is exactly what we enjoy about Tori's concerts. Tori comes to play too, not to just be seen. For others a concert venue exists to express your adulation. Any of you remember a Beatles concert? Elvis? Frank Sinatra? Rudolph Valentino? In these cases the hysterical screaming *was* the reason. Note that the above are all male. Although there may be others, Tori is the first female performer that receives the hysteria formerly reserved only for the male heartthrobs. This may be the price of fame and maybe we should be thankful that it's Tori who is eliciting this response. > (sorry for the long post...)
