Keller" Subject: Tori/Joni The problem with referring to Tori as "Joni Mitchell with a piano" is that Joni Mitchell herself plays piano; off the top of my head I'd recommend checking out "Rainy Night House" on =Ladies of the Canyon= as well as "The Same Situation" (a particular favorite of mine) and "Down to You" both from =Court and Spark=. Actually makes the comparision with Tori seem stronger (as do Kate Bush's "Man with the Child in His Eyes" and "Under the Ivy," her main piano-only songs). Vanity of vanities, there is nothing new under the sun, saith =Ecclesiastes=, and it's true: no performer is totally unique. Every performer, however original or innovative, has forebears and influences. So no one is diminished by having them. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 10:37:27 -0500 (EST) From: jennifer Subject: Nancy Shanks O.K who is this girl? Of Tori's friends, I know of Marianne (obviously), and the girl who "bells for her" was written for. Any info on how these guys are friends would be good. Thanks. Because there are so many people speculating about the whys of this situation, I thought I'd share what I learned about the subject of white t-shirts vs. black. The RAINN/Calvin Klein ads with Tori show her wearing a black t-shirt. She wore this same shirt on Dave. Naturally, fans want the shirt in black. It's been said several times -- here and on other Tori lists -- that "RAINN can't produce the shirt in black because it's too expensive." This is NOT true. The cost is the same to purchase and/or print on either a white shirt OR a black shirt. Kim's parents owned a graphic arts and printing company and they did both all the time. Kim also designed and had black t-shirts printed for his last company. He says when there ever *is* a price difference, it's the black shirts that cost less to buy (I'm guessing this is probably because white is more easily accepted therefore more usable, and black -- appealing to a lesser number of people and selling slower in some places -- can sometimes be found at discount; believe it or not, there's a surprising number of people who will not wear black). So, Kim says, "Most likely what has happened is that a trial run of a few shirts was done in black and a few in white, and Tori was given (or picked out) one of the black ones. Then either playing it safe or just because they liked the white better, RAINN/Calvin decided to mass-produced in white (a BIG mistake since they should have known that the fans would want one like Tori) in one size only (increasing the chances of selling them all). RAINN or Calvin Klein or whoever simply doesn't want to pay to produce more shirts until the existing ones are gone. Chances are, when they make more, they'll be in black." Personally, I think this is true. They just don't seem to be as readily available as the white ones, for some reason. "I'm a New Yorker. I've been reading this list for a while and was wondering if anyone has received their t-shirts from RAINN, yet. I didn't know if there was a delay in receiving the one I ordered or if it was just taking a while to get the shirts out. Thanks much!!!!
