I've often wondered this too. I've also noticed that tori has been compared to just about everybody, prolly because she can't be *classified*. critics always seems to need to put people into these little generalizations -- everyone is like someone else. fortunately for us, tori isn't like anyone else... anyway, i'm sorry if this is not the place for this kind of discussion, but i think this is somewhat relevant to tori because she even talked about this in a "Q" (or was it "Vox"? the one with bjork and pj harvey...) interview: in the music industry, female artists are always pitted against one another. i think that this is beginning to go away now, probably because a lot of women mucisians are realizing it and embracing one another's talents (sarah mclachlan's upcoming lilith fair, for example). plus, this doesn't seem to be true between male artists. now, comparing kate to tori prolly has nothing to do with this, but has anyone else noticed this? (sorry again, but a feminist will be as a feminist will be -- i'm not giving any kind of doctrine here and won't try to, but this is part of a much bigger socialization...if anyone disagrees, etc., email me privately. i enjoy debate/discussion. :) thanks for lettin me tug on yer ears, lurve, feather ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 1997 09:34:23 -0800 (PST) From: Richard Holmes Subject: Re: Anastasia . . . I am assuming that you are referring to Nicole Blackman's review of the concert as this is the only review which is connected to mikewhy's page that references Trent and Tori. While it's certainly OK to trash a reviewer's comments, please give credit where it's due. The review was not on mikewhy's page. It was on the SonicNet Web Site with a link from Mike's page. He even stated that he didn't like some of her comments (nor did I, for that matter). Even if I don't like some of Blackman's "cutseyisms" and completely disagree with some of her "conclusions" I do think her reviews are creative and well written. However, your and my interpretations of her review are not the same. For those of you who haven't read the review, I'm quoting the pertinent paragraph below. Vaulted Show Reviews http://www.sonicnet.com/sonicore/reviews/vault.pl?f=1&id=229&t=2 "Heavy is the Head That Wears Faerie Dust" Tori Amos live at Madison Square Garden, New York -- January 23, 1997 Nicole Blackman reports [large snippage] Spinning back to the harpsichord, Tori's playing a bit of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" as the intro for her next song. As if her repeated NIN references in songs weren't enough, she makes it plain here tonight in her set-up to "Caught A Lite Sneeze," which contains the lyric "made my own Pretty Hate Machine," in a sly reference to NIN's debut album. While many have speculated on Tori and Trent's relationship (he appears on "Past The Mission" on Little Earthquakes), her cover is both a sly in-joke and, somehow more troubling, the way ex-lovers or friends throw pretty grenades. "I need a big loan from the girl zone," she cries a capella and thumps on the piano, then swings seamlessly back to the harpsichord. Nicole Blackman is obviously no Tori fan and it's also obvious that she knows little about Tori's music but do you know for sure that there's no "sly in-joke" reference here? What made you feel that the reviewer was saying that the only reason Tori sang Hurt was to rub it in Trent's face that they weren't an item anymore? Tori certainly uses those "in" lyrics in her songs; Neil for instance. Just my .02 worth. In Tori, Charlie - -- +-------------------+-----------------+--------------------------+ | C.W. I've also noticed that tori has been >compared to just about everybody, prolly because she can't be >*classified*. "classifying" tori seems like a pretty subjective thing to me, but i dare say that she is probably compared to a fair number of people because she has been influenced by a fair number of people. while her music is definitely her own, i think it owes something to the music that she has enjoyed over the years. take "precious-things," for example: the opening riff was directly inspired by nine inch nails. >critics always seems to need to put people into these >little generalizations -- everyone is like someone else. comparisons serve one good purpose: to put the music that they are reviewing in some kind of context for those who are unfamiliar with it. yes, a fair number of lazy critics use canned comparisons as an easy way out to avoid doing their job, but they have their uses. >anyway, i'm sorry if this is not the place for this kind of discussion, >but i think this is somewhat relevant to tori because she even talked >about this in a "Q" (or was it "Vox"? the one with bjork and pj >harvey...) interview: in the music industry, female artists are always >pitted against one another. i don't think this is a real phenomena as much as a perceived one. because the percentage of women in popular music has historically been small, for whatever reason, women may appear to be playing off each other. i highly doubt that majority of women in music are actively trying to out-do each other, but the fact that radio stations and record labels have had limits on the number of women they are willing to play or sign sure makes it appear like they do (or makes more ambitious women actively attack other women performers). >i think that this is beginning to go away >now, probably because a lot of women mucisians are realizing it and >embracing one another's talents dunno if it's as much this as it is just an increase in the "acceptable" number of women that the media is willing to suffer to be rock stars. see above. woj ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 1997 16:59:53 -0800 (PST) From: Mark William Biscomb Subject: Classifying Tori-- Hey Everyone-- Well as much as I agree that Tori is in a class by herself, I have run into the problem of friends and family asking me what kind of music Tori sings and I don't always have a disc or tape handy.
