I am in the middle of revision for a Contract Law exam, which does manage to drive one out of one's mind, but the REALLY horrifying thing is that my best companion of over a year, the "Boys for Pele" CD, has decided to submit its resignation, after a loyal, exhausting service. Now, revealing cracks and scratches on its surface, it is reluctant to play the likes of "Hey Jupiter" and "Horses" without interpretory "jumps". The only thing to be done, before spending stlg15 on a replacement copy, was to refer back to "Under the Pink", to which I haven't listened in yonks. I simply forgot how beautiful it was. ..Anyway...hang on in there... the point of this e-mail is to ask simply ANYONE who knows what the hell "Space Dog" is all about to share their knowledge. It's the song I now play mostly, though I don't have a clue as to what it is about. All I know is that the grapefruit is supposedly winning! Sorry for blabbering on too much. It's the best excuse for not revising. Toodles, Doron, Manchester. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jan 1997 11:54:55 -0500 (EST) From: Adam Segal Subject: lifetime anyone? hey! "way to go, mr microphone show us all what you don't know" how she used music as a medium to help her poetry as the beat poets did...but taking it in a different direction and other things, as wondering where she was "had she gone moved into a trailer park" referring to patti's long graceful step out of the music business but i could be wrong it's what i know ~jordan~neverquite~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jan 1997 13:57:24 -0600 From: "Damon Schmidt" Subject: Re: neil gaiman > Damon Schmidt wrote: > > Yah, they sell it at Dreamhaven books in Minneapolis! As someone else mentioned, the Sandman comic books focus on the Endless-- the title character -- the Sandman -- is the embodiment (or whatever you want to call it) of Dream... he's the Lord of Dreams. Most stories involve Dream, his siblings come into play from time to time. Other times you may barely see Dream at all in an issue. Neil Gaiman wrote/scripted the entire series. A variety of artists did the art-- Neil handpicked artists to fit each story or story arc. All issues of the Sandman have now been collected in trade paperback collections, available at comic book shops and some bookstores, for around $19.95 US for each. There are several collections, all with nifty introductions by various Cool People. The neat thing about getting into it now is that the series is done, so if you get caught up in it, you can quickly beg, borrow, buy, or steal the collections of all of the issues and find out what happens. Gaiman still plans to do occasional Sandman spin-offs, but the main saga is out there. They're also being reprinted in single comic issues if you prefer to take the whole thing at a slower pace. Tori Amos did the introduction for the Death: The High Cost of Living collection, which is sortof a spin-off miniseries from Sandman proper. It might be a good introduction to the series... but I recommend for a peek at the series itself-- the collection Dream Country. Otherwise, if you want to dive in in consequetive order... start with Preludes & Noctournes (the very beginning) or The Doll's House (where Gaiman started to hit his stride, IMHO). You can peek in the collections within the first couple of pages to find out which issues of the comic they collect. :-) As always where Gaiman is concerned, I recommend his other work, besides Sandman, as well. Much is also available in trade paperback (some easier to find than others): Mr Punch, Signal to Noise, Violent Cases, The Books of Magic (the original miniseries of it, I mean), Black Orchid. There's also a collection of his short stories, poetry, and other writings-- Angels & Visitations -- which is really great. Plus the CD of Neil reading lots of stuff from Angels & Visitations... And then there's the music of the Flash Girls... with some of their songs written by Neil as well as other cool people. :-) Info on the Flash Girls is available at http://www.player.org/pub/flash/flash.html and http://www.apocalypse.org/pub/signal-to-noise/ If you have trouble finding any of this stuff, you can email the folks at Dreamhaven Books who carry most (if not all) of his stuff. Their email address is dreamhvn@visi.com. Hope this helps. Laurel Krahn (laurel@pobox.com) http://www.pobox.com/~laurel/ "Lilacs blossom just as sweet / Now my heart is shattered. Ok, heres the deal. I am on the Paula cole list, and in one of the letters someone said something about "Tori changing her rape story" a lot. He doesn't think Tori was really raped. He still thinks her work w/ RAINN is great though (good!). I confronted the guy and I asked him about this. Well, we straightened out one story, but he said this, too: "Between recordings she and her beau/producer split up and he said the story wasn't true" Obviously this is Eric Rosse, and at this comment I said something to the effect that I wouldn't think Eric would do something like that. I admit, I really know nothing of the guy, so it could be a bad part on my judgement or...maybe it is true, maybe its made up by the media....endless possibilities. Also, this guy also said, "Tori has cited that the reason for their split was that while they were touring he had 'A woman in every town'." (He said his source was either Q or Mojo from an article from 1 1/2-2 years ago) Now, I think it was this list we were having the discussion not too long ago about whether Tori was really raped or not because there is some FAQ floating around saying that she "escaped". IMHO, I think she was raped, I mean listen to her interview with Dateline, listen to MAAG...*she* says she was, duh, and I have totally put all my trust into this Queen of Nerds as I'm sure many others have. I'm more or less curious about the stuff like what Eric said. If he did say that...well...WHATTA A$$HOLE!!! As far as I know, Eric and Tori are not on bad terms. Eric is also working with Pet so I am sure that they still interact quite a bit... also I know that tori refers to their break up as something like 'the parting of soul mates' and how he taught her alot..... i really don't believe there is much animosity there... and that Tori is certainly not bitter. I doubt that she would reveal anything to an interviewer about a man in her life, she is a very private person. Also in the 1994 SPIN she speaks about how she doesn't like to speak about her violent experience to satisfy someone's sick voyerism... she revealed what happened in ONE interview... i believe just to set the record straight about things. That interview has been typed by a nice person to the list a few weeks ago. theres my spare change, Kristina "Ive said my say in bits of time, within the strict of simple rhyme, upon a stage of dancing words, as vagrant as the flight of birds...." -Ken Nordine "Devout Catalyst" "If truly his heart was made of icing and I wonder how mine could taste.." -Tori Amos ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V2 #21 ************************************
