I must be missing the point. Are we trying to say that Tori would disapprove of being "validated" by Playboy? Are we trying to make a disparaging comment about that fine magazine? Has she made any public commentary on this subject? (serious question) Richard> Mike's comments: Mike> > Is it really important that Tori win this award, best Mike> > artists as voted by Playboy "readers"? I realize my Mike> > position may not be popular, but I hope she does NOT win. It is not any more important for her to 'win' an Playboy award than it would be for her to win any other media outlet's award. I would be more offended by Tori winning an MTV or VH1 (or maybe People magazine) award. These outlets *both* (all) objectify the artist, as it's pretty clear that _musical integrity_ isn't among their priorities. At least Playboy is a somewhat independent voice in musical matters. Richard> It would be somewhat of a cognitive dissonance if she did Richard> win, I think, at least for me. A cognitive dissonance? Why? Mike> > If Playboy magazine makes you uncomfortable in any way I Mike> > urge you not to vote. If Playboy magazine makes you uncomfortable in any way I urge you to get over it and find something actually *worthy* of your discomfort. _True Action Detective_ anyone? How about _Fangora_? Or _Soldier of Fortune_? Mike> > I simply can't promote this Mike> > magazine in any way. Bullshit! I'm *ABSOLUTELY* certain that this phenomenon would not be even *REMOTELY* affected by whether or not there existed a Playboy magazine. It is rude & sexist to leer at women on the street. It is *not* a victimization of women that MILLIONS of people worldwide like to gaze at the image of _woman_ uncovered. Richard> On the flip side, if you're not a barbie / playmate Richard> clone, or past a certain age, you're "invisible" despite Richard> your credentials... Playboy has absolutely nothing to do with this effect either. Sorry. Find a new (_real_) enemy. Playboy isn't it. I read (past tense) Playboy for a dozen or so years during which time I never had anything short of the utmost respect for women; *never* leered at them or treated them in a untoward manner. Playboy does *not* objectify women any more than they do themselves. *Men* objectify women. *You* probably do, to some extent. Incidentally, my opinion of Playboy TV is *not* as kind as my opinion of the magazine. The *channel* needs some work; they *do* occasionally (hourly-ish) cast a bad light on women, imho, with their playmate-giggle-fest phone-somethingerother advertisements -- "Hey, big man. Call me at 1-800...." whatever it is. Puhleez. Not that I ever *watch* that channel, mind you.
