I talked to a friend of mine and she told me it was a re-run, but it was a good one! I thought Tori did a great job! Scott ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 96 11:56:55 -0000 From: chuck n joe Subject: thoughts Hey gang! Back to the thread about songs that Tori's never played live... Has anyone ever heard her do "Humpty Dumpty"? A lot of people think of that song as just being a throwaway but I love the way she turns a children's fable into a drama of sexual politics! He said " Oh, anything you want I can give" She said "I wanna take your picture... just for me" He said "Anything" She said "Up there baby....Get on the wall, babe".... and of course the ending: She said "I like custard in the summer! Oh baby what it takes to be Queen!" Other thoughts lately: Does anyone know what classical music Tori likes to play, if any? Lately I've been noticing a lot of undercurrents of various classical composers in her writing, mostly a strong Russian/Eastern European influence). Some examples of this: Precious Things -intro (imagine a full string section playing this! Very Shostakovich-ian!) Flying Dutchman -string arrangement (Korngold was a composer of many movie scores and the arrangement here owes a great deal to his style, i.e. the way the swelling strings give the effect of waves on an angry ocean. Anyone ever see "The Sea Hawk"?) Not The Red Baron -intro (major Prokofiev influence here with the resounding, solid, heavy, at-times-dissonant chords) Blood Roses -of course the sound of the harpsichord immediately brings Vivaldi and Bach to mind Yes Anastasia -intro (like Scriabin beneath "If you know me so well..." into more of the booming-chord-"here-comes-the army"-style of many of the twentieth century's Russian composers. This echoes the subject matter quite well. The string arrangement again echoes Korngold.) Of course Tori doesn't write the string arrangements herself and the mimicry of Korngold's movie-music-style lies mainly with David Lord and John Philip Shenal. However what they have chosen to highlight in her music falls in place with the aforementioned influences and IMHO they've done outstanding work on their scores. (As an aside: Korngold started writing classical pieces at the age of 10; His musical style was formed before he started composing for films. It is only because we're so used to hearing his music in so many different movies that his works have been unfairly saddled with the "sounds like Hollywood" tag!) Does anyone remember way way way back around p-t-digest # 3 or 4 someone (Meredith was it you?) writing about a comparison between Tori and Mozart (esp. the fact of both having been child prodigies)? At the time I thought that it was one of the most absurd things I'd ever heard! After all Tori is a pop musician! But the more I've listened lately, the more I hear echoes of these various composers in some of her work... Which brings me to another thought: Recently someone told me (or did I read it here?) that Tori had announced the "the girl and her piano thing is over!". So what do you folks think she'll do next (after a much-deserved rest)? My bet is that the next tour will feature Tori on keyboards, a guitar, a percussionist and various stringed instruments (maybe a quartet). Subject: i have a little bootleg right right...i was at Venus records in New York while i was home over break and bought (seemingly) Tori Amos's "In the Breeze" but managed to get Goddess within it....being the music snob that i am, i looked at the record labels and realised that this was definitely not the same CD, and it wasn't but Venus didn't have In the Breeze now i quite like Goddess, it has the best version of Crucify and Blood Roses that i've heard, but i was wondering if anyone out there has the packaging for it but has the In the Breeze CD, because i'll gladly trade you packages thank you now ~jordan~never quite~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 1996 14:45:44 -0500 (EST) From: Rob Bowell Subject: Re: thoughts On Mon, 2 Dec 1996, chuck n joe wrote: > > Does anyone remember way way way back around p-t-digest # 3 or 4 someone > (Meredith was it you?) writing about a comparison between Tori and Mozart > (esp. the fact of both having been child prodigies)? > At the time I thought that it was one of the most absurd things I'd ever > heard! After all Tori is a pop musician! Well, wasn't Mozart pop for his day? Y'obt., Rob Bowell Everything I say is a stupid lie. I won't tell the truth even when I die. Seems kinda likely... I'm hoping for some eastern influences (hurdygurdy pleeze) and folksy-cum-ambient a la Loreena McKinnett/Enya/Sarah or as I like to call them "Lorenya McLannad". Then again, I suppose that's been done already, but arguably not with Tori's eclectic songwriting or varied style.
