However, I think (and I'll admit I'm coloring this through my own athiestic perceptions of things) that she's against the institution and marketing of the god concept; applied god, if you will. It's been used to do a lot of grandly horrible things (the Inquisition) and banal horrible things (making women feel dirty for being horny). Personally, I feel much the same way she does, but I've also got something against the god industry for impinging on our secular culture (why is there a reference to the Christian god when a secular President of the United States is sworn in?), and for, in my opinion, misleading children about the nature of the universe. The reason I put my personal beliefs in here is because that's where I'm coming from when I listen songs like "God," "Mohommud My Friend" and "Crucify." I also believe that's where Tori's coming from, but am aware that they're so much a part of me that I'm probably just projecting that. I also believe Crucify seems like a different thing to me.. I mean obviouisly it uses religious concepts, but it doesn't seem so much to be opposing the world's "god" or religion at all... but rather using what is said was done to jesus as a metaphor for what we do to ourselves... not necessarily saying factually that jesus was anything, but drawing upon the story, fiction or non-. I really appreciate how tori can be inspired on one hand, and frustrated on another, with different aspects of something, because rarely is anything as cut and dried as most paint it to be. It's usually one way or the other, but with tori it's often all ways at once and youre left a whimpering heap on the floor. Or something. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Josh Sutterfield Musician/DJ-Wannabe/Student/Biped Jester Shot Fluid MaLjaMiN joshu@umr.edu http://www.umr.edu/~joshu - --- Grammar? Well, part of what she's talking about isn't just things we do to ourselves. We grow up in an environment that breeds guilt in us. The primary source of that overwhelming guilt and drive to martyrdom can be, and I think is in her case, derived from rigerous religious indoctrination. I think that's why she used the christ imagery, because she got trained on a drive for self-crucifixtion by the models and mores she was taught in Christianity. > or the other, but with tori it's often all ways at once and youre left a > whimpering heap on the floor. I don't even know that she's against that much. I think it's more the idea that God is _exclusively_ male that bugs her. She seems to want balance. I don't want to speculate on her motives. This is what i understand from reading interviews. -=-laurie ______________________________________________________________________________ Come... dry your eyes, for you are life, rarer than a quark and unpredictable beyond the dreams of Heisenberg; the clay in which the forces that shape all things leave their fingerprints most clearly. There are reasons why certain darkness or evil gets generated over and over again in the same spot. And so I don't assume to know why that is, but I trust it, and go for it. That's why I went to Taos [for Under the Pink]. Eric made me go to Taos, because he was drawn there, and he kept saying 'you must come, you must come, you must feel this place.' When I went there, the minute I was there I knew it was right for recording Under the Pink. " Taos to me, it's a tidal wave waiting to happen. But it ain't happening yet. There's the horses, and there's the bridle, and it wants its head. And it's pulsating, but it's not ready to blow yet. There are a lot of people there who are containing the energy instead of letting it blow. so obviously my next step is to go to Pele..... " Under the Pink was very much about I was not ready to blow open my relationships with men." That's from the May/June issue from this year. It also has great insights on BFP, where it was recorded and what it all means. If you want to order back issues e-mail me personnally and I will send you the info.
