However, I'd like to speak to what Neil represents to Tori, and why she uses him in her music. Neil writes about dreams, and I think it's a pretty easy/simple/quick step to think of Neil as personifying, for Tori, the wonderous and dreamy. The sublime power of imagination to terrify and simultaneously uplift us. Neil -is- the Dream King that he writes about, and, I think, personifies release and freedom from care (she runs to him when her relationship goes to shit in Precious Things) in the speaker's life. My mom always used to tell me that Angie D. had really nice legs which were insured for something like a million dollars. So when Tori is talking about someone whose skinny legs could use sun in the beginning of the song, she's looking critically at someone else. Then, she looks at herself in the same way she's been looking at other people and she realises that she doesn't have perfect legs either (ie that she is not perfect) and so she's trying to pretend she's strong, because she's falling apart but doesn't want the other person to see and then pity her and then come right back to help her again. People on rmta have said that Angie Dickinson was in an abusive relationship for a really long time, and then she left, which took a lot of strength, but i can't really comment on that because i don't know anything about her personal life. > On the Not the Red Baron topic, when Tori played Portsmouth here in the UK > she segued Red Baron into an improvisation about the Dunblane shooting (on > the day of the show a tragedy occurred in Dunblane, Scotland where a gunman > broke into a kindergarten class and killed many of the children) which > would suggest that Red Baron is, at least in part, about the death of > someone you never really knew. (a) Time Out ran a few lines in its diary last week, asking "Is Tori Amos a couple of keys short of a full piano?" This was prompted by Amos telling a journalist that she had been visited by the ghostly presence of Anastasia Romanov, who wanted her story told in a song. Amos recounted the same incident to me. It had happened in October 1992, she said, just before a concert in Richmond, Virginia. She had food poisoning at the time. "I was feeling so sick that I wanted to be put out of my misery. And then I get this presence. It's like a light, a blueish-greyish light . . . The message was, `You need to learn something out of writing my story'." Czar Nicholas II and his family are said to have been executed in July of 1918, but a young woman showed up in 1920 claiming to be Anastasia. She said that a Polish soldier had helped her escape the massacre. There's still controversy over whether or not that woman was the actual daughter of the czar. Tori told this story at many of her shows but is it true? The following is an extract from a review of Tori's San Diego show on June 25 by Anna Marie Barkdoll as posted on MikeWhy's Dent page: 'Right before she sang "Frog On My Toe' she told the story of how she wrote the song after drinking margaritas and finding a piano, then she played a few bars, laughed and said, "No, no, that's not how the song goes." Laughing even harder she said that the story about the margaritas was a lie. She said, "This whole tour I have been telling people this story, and its not true. I made it up. I just thought I would tell all of you the truth, I don't know why." Then she did an endearing little shoulder shrug, threw her hands in the air and continued playing.' I think with Tori you have to say no way is Red Baron about only one dimension of death - all the deaths you list all feel right in the context of the song, which is what I love about her lyrics. I was thinking about the related songs thread and I noticed that ribbons come up alot in Tori's lyrics (Mother, Mary). So even the prettiest red ribbons is ambiguous. Its AIDS, but its also something to do with childhood? Maybe like the death (or loss) of the dreams of love/relationships/life that the child Tori wearing those ribbons had? Or maybe its the loss of that child and then it ties in with the Poppy don't go themes? Black Swan also relates the child (gumdrops and Saturdays) with the breakup (did Eric call by the way) which leads us back to Red Baron being about the death of a relationship as well as literal death??? Hmmm..... If I should at this point stop rambling and enter into private correspondence about this let me know and I'll shut up! I'm going off to think some more about lyrics now. Hope you all enjoy it and have a great day!:) Cathi *********************************************************************** Kibbutz Music Review #1 -- Tori Amos "Hey Jupiter" I picked up the latest in Tori's seemingly endless series of CD singles and EPs on a weekend trip to Tel Aviv, after first hearing of the release on the Net and hearing the actual songs in Eilat, on the Red Sea, the week before. This release is advertised as a "Special 5-song E.P" on the cover, which pictures Tori leaning against a tree branch, with some rather artificial stars behind her. The back artwork is quite lovely, and relevant: a photo of Jupiter's Great Red Spot with one of the smaller moons in orbit above the planet. This doesn't really matter to me (I would buy almost anything with Tori's name on it, and I'm probably the biggest fan within a hundred miles of Sinai) but I appreciated it; Cindy Palmano's art direction is again excellent. The remix of "Hey Jupiter" is not the out-and-out deconstruction that some of the weirder "God" or "Professional Widow" mixes were, but this is certainly a major revision in the song -- Whereas the original was a rather spare piano balad, this version removes the piano and substitutes and slow, but somewhat grating sample loop which recurs through the song. In addition, the striking, wordless 'woo-hoos' in the chorus, which bear more than a slight similarity to Prince's "Purple Rain," are looped and relooped towards the end of the song before leading into a rather surprising and melancholy organ solo which seems entirely original to this remix. The closest touchpoint I can think of for this remix is Nine Inch Nails' "Something I Can Never Have," with the essential ballad within the song placed over a scratchy and deliberately off-putting loop. This song is still fundamentally graceful and lovely, as was the original, but there is definitely more of an edge on the mix this time. I quite like it but still prefer the original. Two of the b-sides make their second appearances on Tori singles, including a live version of "Sugar" (originally from the Little Earthquakes period) and "Honey" (from the time of Under the Pink). Their appearance side-by-side could be deliberate -- sugar and honey, yes. Sugar is one of my favorites and I still prefer the original, although this version has an amusing story about the song's genesis, and a seeming putdown midway through of someone in the audience. "Honey" has one of the better one-liners of Tori's brief but celebrated career - -- when we died, I tried to bribe the undertaker -- and is cleverly augmented by some lovely guitar noises from Steve Cator. Both are lovely pure-piano songs that are fine distillations of what I find most essential in her music ... but then again, I am most pleased when the credits next to her songs read, in total: Bosendorfer, voice - Tori. The version of "Professional Widow" is called the Merry Widow Version, and boy there ain't nothing 'merry' about it. It is performed solely on organ or harmonium, and the fact that I first heard this on Halloween more than made up for the lack of trick-or-treaters in Israel. This is frightening, Vincent Price stuff. Haunted house music for a rainy night in Seattle maybe. Towards the end Tori unleashes one of the most fierce and unnerving vocals I have ever heard, something that a Diamanda Galas fan would appreciated. The almost unheard (subconscious) joke during the song is the tying of the lines about Mother Mary to a brief aside moments later saying "Let it Be" -- John Lennon would have been pleased. Track five is the total clincher, that made this disc worth 39 sheckels many times over. You hear fans screaming "Sugar," "Mary," or a host of other requests, then Tori's mouth opens and the crowd falls immediately silent, as she begins "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I have no idea when this version was recorded, but this is now a staple of her live shows, and is absolutely stunning. I don't believe that much of the piano is previously arranged in the song, it seems to be played as improvisational bridges between Tori's hushed singing of the lyrics. For all the fans who KNEW what song they had to hear, Tori has just shown that she knows better -- the audience at the venue, and the listener at home, are in awe.
