OkToriFest Wrap Up Special thanks to everyone who attended and helped out with our fourth annual OkToriFest celebration. A brief account of the evening's activities is on our web site at . We'd like to thank everyone who attended for helping to make this our best OkToriFest to date! The day kicked off with an assortment of B-side tracks as Toriphiles arrived and got to know one another. Everyone helped out by bringing in a variety of munchies and drinks and "The Chili Guys" (Mike Strait and Scott McDonald) once again provided hot chili for everyone. This year they even added vegetarian soup to their menu. Mike, Scott and Mandy Hienbaugh also helped us put together a huge collection of Tori stuff for fans to peruse. It wasn't long before requests started coming in for the first video of the evening. Was it their first look at "Hey Jupiter" or "Talula" they were calling for? No, it was a replay of Tori's stunning appearance on David Letterman from just the night before. Tori's angelic image did a great job of displaying the four foot video screen to it's best effect (and vice versa). From there it was into an assortment of other videos, most notably all the music videos from Under The Pink. Next up was an assortment of tracks by artists recommended by some of the Toriphiles in attendance. The eclectic tastes that seem typical of Tori's fans were in evidence as we touched on artists from Fiona Apple to Frank Zappa. We even found room for a few tracks from two of Tori's highly recommended opening acts, Bill Miller and Willie Porter. The videos for "Caught A Lite Sneeze," "Talula," and "Hey Jupiter" then graced the screen leading up to our Tori trivia quiz. Teams of four attempted to tackle a set of trivia questions that ranged from easy to downright cruel. Kudos to Kevin Highnight who formed a one man trivia team based on his MVP performance in last year's trivia quiz. After answering 22 questions and guessing 10 taped song fragments, one team edged all the rest by only a few points. The winning team of Lyndi Burton, Menley Barrett, Keith Klitses and Jane Rockwood got to pick their reward from our prize stash of Tori odds and ends. As long as we were awarding prizes, we awarded Mike Gehrman with one of the orange Boys For Pele photo booklets as a thank you for coming the furthest to this year's fest - all the way from Chicago. Then came a few words from Tori herself. Although Tori has never attended an OkTorifest, she knows all about it and was happy to record a special message for those who came this year. A WAV format sound clip of the message is available on our web (http://members.aol.com/rdteditor/rdt.htm) site in the OkToriFest section. Tori's OkTorifest Message I wanna say hi to everybody that's there. Missy and Richard are here with me right now, say hi, guys. Hi everybody! The tour's winding down right now, so it's a little sad. I'm gonna miss everybody. It's never as good as when we're on the road. No matter what I say, that's the truth. Things just aren't as magical. So take care of yourselves and when I see you in a couple of years, hopefully you'll have new stories to tell me and, um, hopefully I'll have some new ones too. Okay. I'll miss you. Bye. From there it was back into more Tori videos, including some fascinating interview footage that was distributed as part of the Boys For Pele press kit. With the hour getting late and folks with long drives home starting to get on the road, pizza seemed to be just the thing to top off the evening. As we treated ourselves to pizza, Michael Strait treated us to some live music, including his cover of Tori's "The Wrong Band." With the fire dying down and the fans starting to look a little blurry eyed it was finally time to wrap things up. With everyone pitching in, we had things torn down and packed up in no time. With the place even cleaner than when we'd arrived, OkTorifest '96 was just a pleasant memory. But we were already starting to think of ways to make next year's fest better still. We hope we'll see you there on October 4th, 1997! Really Deep Thoughts - http://members.aol.com/rdteditor/rdt.htm - The Official P.O. I've heard wonderful things about Willie Porter so I'm hoping > he's still opening. I'm sorry to have to inform you that Willie's last show was on August 8 in Atlanta. Some people like his replacement, Josh Clayton Felt, but I'm not one of them. In fact, I find JCF's "songs" too easily stick in my head as many lines of lyrics are repeated, (seemingly ad infinitum), and also due to the excruciatingly slow tempi he employs. After two shows in his presence, I refuse to even go into the venue until he's offstage unless I have to use the men's room or I have someone to talk to as a distraction. (Tori's T-shirt table woman since 1992, Kelly has served nicely for this on occasion.) :-) JCF only plays about 35 or so minutes, then it's safe to go into the venue without sonic risk. You can then enjoy the Zep Tori has programmed for us. She comes out after D'Yer Maker around 75 minutes after the start time of the show, so 9:15 is typical for an 8pm start time. Others like JCF. They're welcome to him. I hold no grudge against them. Maybe his appeal is beyond me, and I'm stoopid. Wouldn't be the first time. But many agree with me, if not quite as strongly. To me he's a walking Valium. Save your flames. We'll agree to disagree, if that's alright. I was planning not to tell my true feelings about him publicly, but there you go. Brutal honesty, in all its glory. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Date: Wed, 16 Oct 1996 13:56:27 -0500 Subject: Re: Willie Porter MaLjaMiN writes: > Hi, I'm seeing tori in Springfield MO on Nov. 4, and I wonder who will be > opening... Josh Clayton-Felt, former lead of School of Fish (moderate hit with "3 Strange Days" - an abridged version of which he has started sometimes working into his routine) has taken over the role. Willie was pretty good, if a bit too ingratiating (only worked in "St. Louis" about half a dozen times when he played here; I hear he did much the same thing elsewhere). By the third or fourth time I saw JCF opening for Tori I quite enjoyed it and look forward to it again. Just another point of view. And speaking of opening acts... For those who don't follow Richard's example and avoid his opening act. But if you've never heard him at least give him a chance. He is an accomplished guitarist with a very silly sense of humor. I've heard him three times and enjoyed his music. For those of you who have seen Bill Miller and Willie Porter, Josh's music is different from both. So Richard, yes we agree to disagree.
