Tori concert on Saturday and It was really a surprise. > She played lots of non-album cuts. 'Mary' and 'Song for Eric' suprised > me. What you list as Mary was really Marianne. She did a sensitive, heartfelt, but not "big" version of it, (struggling not to cry at least two or three times during it, BTW), which she followed by a short story about when she and Maryanne (the girl on whom the song Marianne is based), used to cut classes from junior high school and go to Maryanne's house and drink when her folks were gone. (Maryanne's house was on the street right behind Eastern Junior High School.) She began the story by speaking over soft, well-spaced opening chords for Case of You by saying "Maryanne was a gin girl." She told how they used to cut the history class of Mr. Havass, who they called Mr. Have Ass. She said the class was four girls and 30 boys, and she named the other two girls in the class who would cut with them. I won't name them here. Song for Eric was a bit surprising, but not unheard on this tour. And it was gorgeous. An emotional way to end the show: from Marianne to Eric. > Haven't seem them drug up since '92. 'Song for Eric' is about her 'ex'. > Suppose they're back together? They aren't, no. Tori is otherwise involved, currently. Confirmed by her as of a week ago, anyway. > It's not like she's making the shows any longer. Last tour she was > playing 90-100mins, this tour she's playing 90-100mins. Actually, she had been pretty consistent about playing something resembling an hour and forty-five minutes per show on this tour until recently, when she's often trimming it down closer to 95 minutes. You are right on the money when you say that she played for 94 minutes on Saturday. She hit the stage at 8:44 and left at 10:18. On the previous Pittsburgh stop of May 30 Tori hit the stage at 9:10 and left at 11:02. That was an hour and fifty-two minutes. > I think she should get with it and give us more for our money. I'll admit that she's getting a bit strained at this point of the tour, but she's still human. I wouldn't judge "more for our money" by time, though. I never felt ripped-off from a show of hers. Even when her wrist is bothering her she puts her heart into it. I would like to see her jump in with some of the brand new material she's been working on. We've been getting some snippets slipped in, but I think she's at the point with it that she could just say that she was going to play something new, and go for it. People would love it, and she'd get a needed confidence boost on the new material. The new stuff I heard at the Boston soundcheck is astonishingly gorgeous, though quite different from her previous works. But people are gonna love it, (she was like *soaring* when she was playing that stuff, and I was right there with her), and she's going to have to make the leap eventually. Anyone who sees her over these next couple weeks please suggest this to her, and I plan to do the same when I see her in Baltimore at the end of the month. Wish I'd had the chance to say that to her Saturday, but it was all I could do to get her away from me. ;-) > She has 3 albums an EP, and a lot of b-sides. Melissa Etheridge, Elton > John and Bruce Springsteen play for OVER 2 hours each show. Well, they also have bands. They also don't have as grueling a tour schedule as Tori, and play larger venues. You wanna see Tori in a 20,000-seat venue? Didn't think so. > At least Tori can try to approach the 2 hour mark. Again--she had been playing 1 3/4 hours pretty much every show of this tour until just recently. On April 28 in D.C. she played for over two hours, and again, in Pittsburgh in May she played for an hour and fifty-two minutes. I don't think that's entirely true anymore... I think a lot of the reason she performs the song is for her audience. When she gets on that stage and performs there's a certain amount of selflessness... The songs ask to come through her and she allows them to in her voice. MAAG seems to want to make an appearance constantly. It's a healing song. It breaks barriers. And if anything, that's what she there to do. I don't knowif this makes any sense. I hope so. I wonder if Tori includes the song for its entertainment value. She's spoken in many articles about how fans continue to write her about that song and how comforting or healing it is for them. She's also mentioned that she finds the song healing. In "Tori's Story," she said, "'Me and a Gun' is *not* about him. It's more about me forgiving myself. That's why my music now is so therapeutic, so cathartic for me. I made a commitment not to be a victim again, by writing and by singing as often as I can 'Me and a Gun'." In an Australian television interview (NOMAD), transcribed by Raic@music.macarthur.uws.edu.au, she said, "And the hardest part is performing it every night because, although I know I'm safe, a part of me has to go to that place to sing it. And what this whole process has taught me is, I'm not a victim. Although when I go in and sing it every night, there's a certain energy I bring to make it very real and then after the performance is over I can go and have a ICECREAM and have a life and say, 'this is over. I can talk about it and I have love in my life.' And it's really important to get to that stage." > b-sides. Melissa Etheridge, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen play for OVER 2 > hours each show. At least Tori can try to approach the 2 hour mark. I > wouldn't image anyone complaining about her playing two hours instead of 90 According to an interview she did for The West Australian in December of 1994, she has problems with her wrists. She did the UTP tour in spite of the pain, and apparently she's willing to do this one, too. I can understand if at this point in the tour it may be becoming a bit much for her. I suppose we're lucky she's willing to tour at all. She could be a studio artist, like Kate Bush (who herself has good reasons for not wanting to tour). The new stuff I heard at the >Boston soundcheck is astonishingly gorgeous, though quite different from >her previous works. Yeah.. I heard snippets of her new stuff at soundcheck and loved it. I swear one of them had the word "sacrifice" in it quite a bit. Anyway, I really doubt she'll start playing new stuff on tour. At the last interview here in Seattle one of the DJ's asked her if she does that and she said she has 60 some bootlegs and she's not ready for some of those songs to be on disc in ANY form. ~Angie ------------------------------ From: John Wolfe Date: Tue, 17 Sep 1996 22:36:51 -0400 Subject: Bootlegs debate Okay here's my current delima. I"m going to order one of the new boots from this tour, but I can't decide which one. So here's the delima, one is great sound with pretty good songs, just not Blood Roses, by second fav, but has GREAT quality. THe other has GREAT songs, but only good sound quailty, plus it has some random Tori mistakes that would make it way cooler. I'm not wild about paying 50 dollars for something that is going to sound like it was recorded from a helocopter. Anyway, let me know what you think.
