Just thought I'd share two more connections between Tori of the YKTR period and Patti Smith during her peak period in the years 1975-1978: Both concern Etienne trilogy, the masterpiece of YKTR and to me the album's centerpiece. The song is interesting in that 1. it is divided into three parts, and 2. it ends with a bagpipe solo. It should be noted that Land, the center/masterpiece of Patti's first album Horses was similarly divided into three parts (i. horses, ii. land of a thousand dances, iii. la mer (de)). And the title song of Patti's resurrection album, appropriately titled Easter, ended with a stunning bagpipe solo. I think it's interesting to note these influences to gain a larger appreciation of Tori and her musical heritage. ------------------------------ From: meredith Date: Mon, 16 Sep 96 22:41:27 EDT Subject: New RDT and other things Hi! Well, that's what I get for giving up: I came home today to a brand new issue of _Really Deep Thoughts_ in my mailbox. This one was definitely worth the wait. The layout is stunning, J.D. Considine's interview amazing (is this the same one that appeared in the Baltimore Sun the week the album came out, I wonder?), and the pictures and doodles wonderful as always. Hopefully we won't have to wait as long for the next one, but if the quality stays this high, I'm sure that will be worth the wait, too. :) Here's an interesting tidbit for everyone to chew on: I was looking through the latest BMG Music Club catalog (I get the Classical version, but they enclose special things from the other flavors of the club from time to time), and found a brochure called "Landmark Albums", purporting to list "four decades of music milestones". The list includes everything from Joni Mitchell's _Blue_ and Richard and Linda Thompson's _Shoot Out The Lights_ to dubious choices like AC/DC's _Back In Black_ and REM's _Out Of Time_ (I guess you have to cover all the bases if you're gonna have a prayer of pleasing everybody). Most notable, however, is the listing for _Little Earthquakes_! The blurb reads as follows: "Marked by an intense intimacy that makes the listener a participant rather than an observer, 'Little Earthquakes' unrelenting emotional immediacy and subtle eroticism introduced the public to the powerhouse that is Tori Amos. From the harrowing, a cappella _Me And A Gun_ to the harmonically complex _Silent All These Years_ and _Crucify_, this classically-trained performer displays an unbridled passion, in both her singing and her remarkably 'physical' piano work, that is as shocking as it is gorgeous." A bit over the top, but hey -- at least it was included. :) (The two glaring omissions from the list, according to meth-n-woj, are Kate Bush's _The Dreaming_ and David Byrne/Brian Eno's _My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts_, but hey, you can't have everything...) +========================PLEASE NOTE NEW E-DRESS!!!!!======================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | Boonton, NJ USA http://remus.rutgers.edu/~woj/meth | +==========================================================================+ | "There's a god up there, and god I wish it was mine" - Susan McKeown | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ From: Richard Handal Date: Mon, 16 Sep 1996 23:00:12 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: New RDT and other things Meth wondered: > This one was definitely worth the wait. I understood that it was to be nearly the entire phone interview he did with her, not the Sun article simply reprinted. Richard Handal ------------------------------ From: "Joseph A. Tori concert on Saturday and It was really a surprise. She played lots of non-album cuts. 'Mary' and 'Song for Eric' suprised me. Haven't seem them drug up since '92. 'Song for Eric' is about her 'ex'. Suppose they're back together? The show was good except my usual complaints..... A) She ruins Precious Things with her vocal 'gymnastics'. It was better on the UTP tour. B)Does she have to play MAA Gun _every_ show? She plays a varied set from show to show to 'keep it fresh' and I suppose to keep her sanity, too. But in every show there it is, MAA Gun. Sure, the song has it's 'message', but give it a rest! It makes her seem like such a martyr. She doesn't play her 'signature' songs everynight, which is very good. MAA Gun is becoming tired. After seeing her several times, It's like, "She could be playing song 'xxxxx' here. I've heard this before." It's not like she's making the shows any longer. Last tour she was playing 90-100mins, this tour she's playing 90-100mins. I think she should get with it and give us more for our money. She has 3 albums an EP, and a lot of b-sides. Melissa Etheridge, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen play for OVER 2 hours each show. At least Tori can try to approach the 2 hour mark. I wouldn't image anyone complaining about her playing two hours instead of 90 mins. Tori Amos- A. J.
