It's been a while since I've been able to catch up on mail. I was in Chicago for much of last week, including last weekend, during which time I found and bought a copy of the _Cornflake Girl_ book. Anybody else have this? Am I wrong in my assessment that this book contains the best collection of Tori pictures this side of the Andromeda Galaxy? Yow! I can't talk about the text, as I haven't actually read it yet. :) Sounds like I didn't miss anything on the Tori chat. What a bunch of morons. I'm sure Tori has an even higher opinion of us net.denizens now. :P :P :P woj opined: >i stayed up way past my bedtime to catch tori on letterman last night >and was a little disappointed. the choice of song was nice (i wonder if >she, as usual, had no idea what song she was playing before walking out >on stage or if the producers had her pick the song in advance), but the >performance was flat and didn't really impress me. Hmmm. I drove like a maniac to get from downtown Chicago to my hotel in Rockford, Illinois in time to see Tori on Letterman, and got into my room just as Dave introduced her. I was ecstatic that she performed "Muhammad My Friend" -- that song has settled quite comfortably into the role of my favorite song on the album, and I wasn't expecting her to play it at all. I don't think her performance was any more flat than any televised perform- ance given by a woman who has got to be suffering jetlag from a transcontinent- al flight after a month and a half of touring who is now stuck sharing the stage with a buffoon like David Letterman. I have seen her do better, but then again, it still wasn't disappointing. Definitely worth doing 80 all the way up the Tollway. :) Neile added: >I did like her beating again the piano for percussion and the movement of >her hands in the middle. Seemed more expressive than she can usually be >with a camera. I noticed that, too. I liked the beating on the piano -- it confirmed my suspicion that the little rapping sounds at the beginning of the studio version are from her knuckles (or her mood ring, which was conspicuously absent on the telecast) hitting the piano. >I'm beginning to think that if I can't see her in a small club anymore I >would like to see her out from behind the piano sometime with a band. I >think she'd have fun--that's the one thing about "The Big PIcture" >video--she really seems to be having a blast. Yeah, but then who would play the piano? Without Tori at the piano, her songs would really be missing something -- her own personal piano style is so much a part of the songs, you can't just have someone else play the parts and expect it to work as well. >Funny, I never thought this before but the girl-and-a-piano thing has to >be intimate to work and it just isn't anymore. I'd wait until you've seen her on this tour to make that judgement. On the last tour, Tori proved capable of taking a 1,500 seat theater and giving it the atmosphere of one a tenth the size -- I'm not saying she'll be able to do that everywhere this time around, but she may surprise us all. I already know from experience that she can do that with the Palace Theater in New Haven, so I'm not worried about either of those shows. It will be interesting to see how she handles the Paramount in NYC, though. A lot of it depends on the audience, too... in the end it may be obnoxious audiences that bring her down, not the intimacy of her performances. Lucy noted: >I was thinking. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see Tori play her piano, along >with a full orchestral accompanyment? So many of her songs have strings and >horns and stuff in it, I think it would be great to hear that all put together >live! I think that could really work, but I don't think she would need a full orchestra. She would only need maybe a brass quartet and a string quintet to pull everything together nicely. Hell, if the Pretenders can breathe new life into their old music with a string section, anything is possible! :) Karen inquired: >Which songs in particular would you like re-arranged? Even though I'm not Lucy, I'll put forth a few suggestions here. :) I think "Precious Things", "Girl", "Honey", "Sugar", "Little Amsterdam", "In The Springtime of His Voodoo", and "God" could be really, really intriguing with the right string arrangements. And of course "Flying Dutchman", "Little Earthquakes", "Yes, Anastasia", and "Marianne" already have their wonderful arrangements. Miguel reported: >Seen in the crowd at Tori's MTV Unplugged tape session: Oh, geez. >It was an excellent experience, maybe more so since Tori was rusty on >the piano to begin the show, taking a break during mid-PRECIOUS THINGS >"to find the girl who has been playing the piano for 30 years" That's really bizarre. I've never heard of that happening before! I wonder what was up? >She became stronger as the evening went on, and I think the MTV people >weren't too happy she kept playing new stuff during the encores. But >I'm sure this will be a point of discussion on the list for weeks to >come. I can't wait to see the finished product. June, is it? I must say, though, that while I had the chance to be in the audience for this taping (alas, life intervened :P), and despite the fact that those who have posted about it here enjoyed it, I'm not too upset at having missed it. I know several people who have had the misfortune of being in the audience for various eMpTV tapings, and they have all said it was a singularly unpleas- ant experience. All the interruptions, the "you have to do that again, the lighting on your butt wasn't right", that sort of thing. And I hear there was a dress code for the audience? "Casual, no suits." Goddess forbid anyone do anything to tarnish eMpTV's oh-so-hip image. Everyone in the US, set your VCR's to catch the "Talula" video on 120 Minutes tonight... Someone, please confirm or deny > this and get back to the list. I can't provide official news -- but MTV's WWW site has absolutely no record of this, and that seems pretty much like a 'no' on that one. I'd be surprised if they were able to get Tori back on there again. Tori's a bit computer-phobic, it seems.
