Hi Toriphiles, I know this is clutching at straws, but does ANYONE have or know where I can get a tape of the show Tori did at Newcastle City Hall, UK on the 5th of March this year, cos I was there and I REALLY need a copy! I've tried all my usual local dodgy record stores but to no avail. If anyone's heard of a tape going round, please let me know, I've got lots of stuff I can trade. Thanks, Paul :) ============================================================================ "I'm trying not to move, it's just your ghost passing through" - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- St Aidan's College, University Of Durham. http://www.dur.ac.uk/~d550du ============================================================================ ------------------------------ From: mfgr@bart.nl Date: Tue, 26 Mar 1996 20:46:44 -0100 Subject: Tori Amos in Haagsche Courant 2/2/96 Hi! The following article, which I've tried to translate into readable English, was published on February 2, 1996 in the Haagsche Courant, a local Dutch newspaper in the city of Den Haag (where I live). This, and many other Dutch articles will appear in my forthcoming Tori Amos site on the Web. (Yes, another one!) I do hope you like this - if you do, I'll send more to this list. =================================================================== The fire-offer of Tori Amos After a false start in 1988 with her group Y Kant Tori Read?, Tori Amos debuted powerfully in 1991 with "Little earthquakes". Four years on the American musician has lost nothing of her willfulness. Her fourth album "Boys for Pele" is one of vehement emotions. Tori Amos, eyes closed, lips tight against the microphone and her red hair partly put away under her black headphones. Heartwrenching pains sound through what she sings, but also tender passion, as if the inventive, colorful improvisations make her happy. Tori seems totally locked up into her own fantasy world, being stared at by three cameras, that do their work for the television program "2 Meter sessions" from Jan Douwe Kroeske. Then the musician stands up and says to the small group behind the glass in the control room of the Bulletsound Studio in Nederhorst den Berg: "I would be less bothered when you look at me whilst I'm making love, instead of now. I can't cope with this." Muffled laughing. Little later Tori sings her new single "Caught a lite sneeze" a- capella. The song, sung with lots of air makes for a nice atmosphere. "Sneeze" comes from her fourth album "Boys for Pele" and she's got reason to be pleased since it entered the British charts at number 2. Despite this, she states that life isn't kind to her today. "Look at my hair!", she exclaims despairingly. Since the release of "Under the pink" in 1994, Tori Amos (32) is emotionally drained. The breakup with Eric Rosse, now eighteen months ago - "eight years in love. We were soulmates" - has gotten to her deeply. The vampire-like story of "Blood roses", the first song she wrote for "Boys for Pele", is an accurate, be it fragmentary, story of their rather suffocating relationship. The minister's daughter talks softly, almost whispering, when she tells of her more than one hundred dates long tour around America in the summer of 1994. "Under the spotlights I could live a little, but when I left the stage, I wasn't much more than a body. There was not much left of any rational thinking. The only thing I wanted to do was live, really live. Not as a musician, but as an independent woman. That wasn't real easy. Eventually the real value of life is an individual activity. There's no manual for that. Then, like the person in "Blood roses", I claimed my freedom. I won't talk about it too deeply, but we agreed that we both needed to express ourselves individually. Our lives had become too much entwined. But, we did also grow up together." Suddenly, cheerful: "Since then I've discovered so many sides of myself that were hidden. I've become a different person altogether. Maybe it's my christian upbringing, that I kept myself so trapped for so long. It's as if my blinders have fallen off. I look at the world differently now." Pain Tori drops a long silence. "After Eric I've pulled in many other men into my life. Many of the emotions, which you find in the compositions on "Boys for Pele", were fed by those relationships. The past two years have not been the happiest of my life. But, will I ever be totally happy anymore! I've desperately tried to fill the hole that Eric left, but with those other men the edge of the ravine came closer. They had no problems licking every inch of my body, but they never gave any real tenderness, real loving. Eric was my soulmate, with him a part of myself went out of my life. Honest. And instead of searching for myself in me, for those lost values, I tried to find them with others, especially men. Until I realized how I lowered myself. I tried to use those men as my energy source, like the Hawaiians wanted to please Pele, their volcano god, by offering boys to it. But, only when I found my own strength, those songs came." Womanhood "Boys for Pele" is an album filled with vehement emotions. There's a place for bitterness and anger, but also for tenderness and forgiveness. For her sometimes desperate feelings she used unconventional imaging or wordsketches. "They're a reflection of the emotional search for my womanhood. I plucked them right out of the air and translated them. All those sketches kept bothering me, until they fitted together like pieces of a puzzle. Even the place on the album was decided by them. Thus, it's more a novel than a collection of songs. Sometimes I worked very instinctively. I used strings in "Father Lucifer", but that didn't work out at all. Then I asked the National Giard of Louisiana to march on the music, but when everybody was finally ready for it, those men had drunk so many Budweisers, that they couldn't walk in their places anymore. And using only the harpsicord in "In the springtime of his voodoo" turned out to be too little of an instrumentation, so I asked Manu Katche to play with me. Piano and drums in one take, together with vocals. I'd never tried that, but it worked." Church She spent four months in Ireland, where she recorded in a church in Delgany and a 'fantastic humid Georgian house' in Cork, to finally move to Louisiana in the deep south of America. "I thought, if I want to get in touch with the hidden part of my womanhood, then I'd best do it in church, where those emotions and truths were suppressed or 'cut away' from the first day onward. In the church there's only room for one truth, their truth and that's what made it important to me. I visited lots of churches, but acoustically Delgany turned out to be the best one. We recorded the biggest part of the album there, in what I would now describe as the tempo of a slug. In New Orleans we only recorded the gospelchoir and some other small business." "Boys for Pele" was recorded in lots of freedom. That's because Tori had taken on the role of producer for the first time. "I've felt like a chef cook all those months. Nice work, as long as it was aout the music. All those other business that you get involved with when you're a producer have driven me to despair at times. Dish But the music kept on being a challenge. It's like finding the right ingredients of a dish that you're preparing. I mean, when we (the engineers Marcel van Limbeek and Mark Hawley, with assistance of Rob van Tuin) put the sound in "Beauty Queen - Horses" through a Leslie-loudspeaker, we were content. I knew, that I had to record those songs that day, so the guys had put, by way of an experiment, the Leslie and microphones on the graveyard of the church, covered with a cloth to protect it from the rain. The result had exactly the resonance I was looking for. The sound of that trash- harpsicord - normally, it's a very decent instrument that is used in baroque mostly - worked very freeing. I felt like my study of the instrument started to be fruitful. "Blood roses" gained strength when we steered the sound of the harpsicord through a Marshall. And using the church bells was, of course, wonderful. "Father Lucifer" didn't contain drums, although Manu Katche almost begged me on his knees to play them. I used only bass. But it's the trumpet of James Watson that makes the whole feel of the track. Frequencies "I didn't really think too much about the arrangements. They were dictated by the material. The pilot conversation in "Red baron", for instance, was introduced when I was playing some piano and Marcel and Rob started talking about frequencies. I said, keep talking and that conversation was recorded together with the piano. I think that marriage worked as well." How it'll be translated on stage, Tori doesn't know yet. Or she does: with lots of improvisations, through which all of her hidden meanings in compositions, arrangements and even her breathing gain strength, without losing intensity. These are movies of baker baker, God, Pretty Good Year & Cornflake girl. I did manage to get the 0,5 Mb file of Baker baker, but the big ones, those of 20 Mb and higher, are just plain unobtainable! I even tried it at work, where we have an ISDN cable to get straight on the Internet, but it just stops midway through, and it's not because there isn't enough diskspace. Is there anyone who has these files??? I will add dates to this list as I receive confirmation. If your city isn't listed then it means they either haven't made plans for your city or are not ready to announce it for some reason. Neither RDT Fanzine nor myself have any inside information on potential shows. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHEN IS SHE COMING TO (MY CITY)? If its not on the above list then we don't know yet. Keep watching on-line regularly. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHEN DO TICKETS FOR (MY CITY) GO ON SALE? If its not on the above list then we don't know. Tori's management and record company are not involved in ticket sales, they don't have that information. They leave that up to the individual show promoters. I am updating the above list from people telling me when tickets go on sale so please help contribute information. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HOW CAN I KNOW WHEN TICKETS FOR (MY CITY) GO ON SALE? Your best bet is to call the venue and your local ticket agency. They will usually deny any information about the show. That doesn't mean the concert isn't gonna happen, it just means they are not ready to announce it. They will often deny any knowledge of the concert right up until the day they begin selling tickets! Keep calling every few days. Typically the agency will make an announcement a few days before tickets go on sale. For example, in the San Francisco bay area, new ticket sales are announced on Friday and start selling on Sunday. And when you find out, please help your fellow Tori fans by spreading the information. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HOW CAN I GET GOOD SEATS? No, I can't get you good seats. No, Richard Caldwell of RDT can't pull strings and get good seats for you. No, we can't get you backstage passes. Just take your chances in line or on the phone. Good luck! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WILL THE SHOW SELL OUT? Yes, most of the concerts have been selling out within an hour so you want to be at the ticket outlet when sales start, don't plan on going later in the day when the crowd dies down. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE SCHEDULE SHOWS 3 CONCERTS FOR (MY CITY) BUT THEATER DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE SECOND SHOW? A concert promoter will often hold back the second show until after the first one sells out. This has been done for some of the Tori concerts. If you call the theater or ticket agency then they will deny any information about a second show. However, it will usually go on sale minutes after the first one sells out so you might want to hang out at the ticket outlet for a while. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE CONCERT IN (MY CITY) IS SOLD OUT, HOW CAN I GET TICKETS? 1. Post on-line asking if anybody has extra tickets to sell. 2. Keep a close eye on-line to see if anybody has extra tickets. 3. Call a local ticket seller/broker. You will pay a high price. 4. Look in the newspaper ads. You will pay a high price. 5. Keep trying the ticket agency, sometimes tickets are returned. Especially on the day of the show - often extra seats are freed up or unused tickets are returned to the box office. 6. Go to the theater and buy from somebody selling on the street. I've bought great Tori seats for below face value just before the show. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DO TORI'S FAN CLUBS HAVE SPECIAL TICKET OFFERS? Unfortunately, no. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHERE CAN I FIND THE LATEST TOUR INFO ON-LINE? If your area is served by TicketMaster, then you can check their web site for concert and on-sale information: http://www.ticketmaster.com Other sources: 1. Read the rec.music.tori-amos newsgroup 2.
