Ullwer" Date: Wed, 20 Mar 96 15:20:39 +0100 Subject: Tori in Duesseldorf Hi there, it looks like a very big building, the 'Philipshalle' in Duesseldorf. Oh yes, indeed, it is - not only from outside. When we entered the venue at a quarter past seven on March 19th 1996, the entrance hall was crowded with people. Big business on the merchandising table, T-Shirts for 50 doitschmarks (about 35 bucks), but, sorry, no posters. We took place in a three-stone-throws-distance away from stage, a little bit above the ground. So we had a nice overview on the masses, I didn't count them but they were at least two thousands, maybe three. At first I didn't care to realize that this could cause any trouble, even when Willie Porter appeared. I'm accustomed to television, where you at first can get an overview, and the important scenes will be shown from a better position or in slo/mo. Unfortunately, there was no slo/mo at the Philipshalle... So we enjoyed Mr Porter's talented guitar play and his comments on his first show in Paris (basis for the tune called 'fear') and some remarks on his song 'Rita', which was presented by him in a German TV-Show already a few months ago. Later on he asked the audience: 'Who's in favour of Michael Jackson?' and some ten people showed up. He repeated his question, maybe because of the language barrier not all understood him correctly. The second time about eight people showed up. He then asked: 'Who's in favour of Stevie Wonder?' and played 'Superstition', changing his style from Wonder to Jackson. Though he told us two or three times, who where the two guys which accompanied him, I forgot their names within a few seconds time. Half an hour after his gig, Tori appeared on stage in front of the stars to the tune 'Son of a preacher man' by Dusty Springfield. She began with 'Beauty Queen' and fell directly into 'Horses'. Then followed: Losing My Religion Blood Roses Little Amsterdam Space Dog Cornflake Girl Doughnut Song Leather Precious Things Not the Red Baron Icicle Caught a Lite Sneeze Silent All These Years Talula Me and a Gun ------------- Putting the Damage On Winter ------------- Mr Zebra Smells Like Teen Spirit Hey Jupiter. The acoustics didn't give reason to complain about, in contrary to the venue she played last time in Duesseldorf, during the UtP tour. I remember that gig very well, especially the crystal bits of lights reflected from Tori's eyes - something we missed this time. We didn't get a look on her face at all, we were much too far away. I couldn't even recognize the colour of her hair - and isn't it important for you guys, is it? I think she wear that lilac long shirt, maybe similar to that in the video for 'Talula'? Tori didn't say very much, introduced Steve Caton as 'This is Caton. He played on all the records. Appearantly we were together, long time ago, in a band called 'Y Kant Tori Read' - but we won't talk about it. And now I have to stop talking, cause his guitar wants to begin the next song...' When she was told by the audience: 'We love you, Tori', she answered: 'And I love you, too. Alles klar...' She seemed to be in a not so bad mood, exept for MaaG, which took a lot of power from her - imho it's not by chance, that she plays it at the end of the first part of her concerts. I must admit again, I had my difficulties to get fully into her. This doesn't mean that I didn't like the show, however, it grasped me not as much as expected. Please, try to think of the first time you had LE in your player and listened to MaaG! Maybe I'm too simple, but I will never forget what Loreena revealed for me, when I heard her covering Tom Wait's 'Greensleeves'. Tori is able to do it for me, I know that! And I know that is not just me, even she felt a little bit uncomfortable in this large hall, as she told us. So I wonder who's responsible for that? Hopefully they'll think over and change their policy for the next tour... Otherwise I don't feel as if I want to see her again under this circuumstands... Bye for now, this was Wolfgang speaking. - -- "I leave you these words behind Wolfgang T.
