The early 80's had some interesting female vocalists, but I kind of "gave up" on current rock around the time Heart released `Never'. Then in 1992, while flipping through radio channels while driving, I heard `Crucify' and knew it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. LE changed my perception of music, and replaced "After Bathing at Baxter's" as my favorite rock album. `Bells' on UTP essentially became, and still is, my favorite Tori song. (Did anyone else hear it on "Shickele Mix" in July of this year? Peter likes it.) Already having an appreciation for the harpsichord from my classical music interests, BFP was an interesting step. I stopped reading the mailing lists just after FTCH came out, and was relieved that TVAB sounded like music as music, not painful stories of Tori's life. It seemed that after practically 10 years she had finally achieved what she set out to LA for. (I don't yet have SLG as her covers never to seem to have her personal "magic" in them, but plan to get it soon.) The only radio formats I listen to consistently to, to find other enchanting artists, are shows like Echoes, New Directions, PM Jukebox, Highway 61, Celtic Connections, Thistle and Shamrock, etc. I found Maire Brennan, who has especially come to life with her Celtic Christian albums. And next on my list to explore is Happy Rhodes, who seems to be known to many Tori fans from way back. So, as for analyzing SW, I've only scratched the surface, and want to give what I have so far. First of all, isn't this the only album with a song having the name of the album itself? As for my initial comment a few weeks ago about feeling like it was 1992 again, musically the solo piano versions of `Pancake' and `Virginia' have a `Crucify'-like intensity, and even some tie-in lyrics: `Virginia' - "wait for their savior to come" `Crucify' - "looking for a savior" `Pancake' - "messiahs need people dying in their name" More vague: `Virginia' - "and with a 'goodbye' there she goes" `Bells' - "and there goes her friend" The intro to `Pancake' is very similar to BFP's `Blood Roses'. Also interesting is `Liquid Diamonds' on FTCH while SW has `Carbon'. (`Carbon' also sounds like what I would call classic Tori, from the LE - UTP era.) An interesting issue now is what constitutes the "real" version of a song. I found that, especially in the case of my two favorites, `Virginia' and `Pancake' that the various October solo piano versions are better than the CD versions. (And I just have heard one of those live `Scarlet Walk' versions on some radio show during October, while I had my computer apart and wasn't listening very carefully, as I wasn't aware that Tori even had a new CD out, until something in the Sony list caught my eye.) The SW CD does have a "commercial" sound to it. E.g., there aren't the dynamic jumps like in `Pretty Good Year' on UTP, making it the first one that can be simply played from start to finish without "surprises". (Either sonically or emotionally.) The rock and roll energy in the CD's `Pancake', while very nice unto itself, is very different than the focus of the Oct 2002 solo piano live versions. And as my final comment, I should add that `Operation Peter Pan' is also one of my favorites from the SW production. _________________________________________________________ Reed Darsey / Grand Bay, Alabama, USA / eFax 520-569-6961 1st month Free!
