Here is what the NPR web site (www.npr.org) says: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 Her fans have been called "frighteningly obsessive," but for singer-songwriter Tori Amos, they're a source of inspiration. Amos joins Morning Edition on Wednesday to talk about America, borrowing stories from her fans and her latest album, Scarlet's Walk. I think Howie Day was a terrible opening act. It was almost funny. Here he is, the guy and his guitar, while super-over-produced music blares from the speakers. There were several times when he just stopped playing the guitar, oddly enough, the music still played. When he (finally) walked off the stage, his last song was still playing, vocals and all. Kinda funny. Tori packed in a ton of songs, including A Sorta Fairytale, Wednesday, Mrs. Jesus, Pancake, Crucify, Silent All These Years, Hey Jupiter (beautiful) In the Springtime of His Voo Doo, Baker Baker, Here. In My Head, Spring Haze, Cornflake Girl, Precious Things, Lust, and so on. She did her cover of The Cure's "Lovesong" and I thought I might die of happiness. The only complaint I have is that she really didn't interact with the audience much. Except for a small dialogue about people in Ohio burning down their houses (Ohio State University had beaten U of Mich. in football the ngiht before, and they rioted to celebrate), she didn't have much to say, not even responding to shouts from the crowd. However, this did allow her to pack in more songs, so it was all right. And she was her usual little gracious self, waving and smiling and blowing kisses at the end. Two encores, and not a lot of waiting for them (I hate the idea of encores, but that's another story). All in all, this is right up there with the best show I've ever seen. ~~julie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 04:07:10 +0000 From: "Stephanie Rae" Subject: Tori survey! here's a Tori survey for everyone. all questions refer to Tori Amos of course. it's short and fun so give it a try. don't worry. 1. Haha,,,ok, i never write to this list ever but, after last saturday night i feel mega connected to other Tori fans...you guys are great! Okay, well, the Columbus show was soooo crazy...I swear to God, it was such a chaotic fun night. I dragged my boyfriend along (he isn't really a Tori fan but, I didn't have anyone to go with me! I don't know any Tori fans around here :(. ). We drove for about an hour and a half to get to Columbus which is so funny b/c I have never been willing to drive anywhere for another artist before...but, I love Tori! We got there and I bought a short, tour book, and necklace. DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK THAT THE TOUR MERCHANDISE THIS YEAR IS RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE? I love Tori but, come on, $65 for that 3/4 sleeve shirt?? I loved it and I wanted it so bad but, I definetly couldn't afford it. I talked a little bit to other fans which was fun and new for me b/c, like I said before, I don't know any Tori fans really. There was such an amazing mix of people there. A lot of gay couples, gothic chicks, straight couples, older people, some teenagers... just...wow, all different kinds of people and they all seemed nice and it was great. We got to our seats and yeah, it turned out we were in the very last row so I was a little disappointed but, it was a pretty small place and there wasn't really a bad seat in there so it was ok. Howie Day was...hmm, okay. I mean, he was interesting and he seemed at ease with the audience making a lot of jokes and stuff. Tori came out and was amazing. She was wearing some crazy dress and she looked great. At first she didn't interact with the audience much just like u guys have been saying but, she eventually warmed up to us. It was a great concert. I loved every song she played; it was funny cuz I kept turning to my bf going, "oh my god, no, i looove this song," like everytime she started to play. The funniest thing ever was that she ended with "Tear In Your Hand," which was so amazing and appropriate and great. When she started to sing, "It's time to wave goodbye now" some guys screamed, "nooooo!!!" and someone was like, "we looove you tori!" it was really funny she stopped for a second to laugh but then kept going. It was great to hear her laugh. :) After the show a ton of us waited for her outside the exit. It was freezing and we waited for a long time. Eventually this guy came out and on his right was a girl with pajama pants on, a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and pink fuzzy slippers. I knew it was her but, obviously she wanted to be left alone. I watched her walk right past us. Barely anyone else noticed her. I saw her peek over past her hood, smile at us, and pull the hood back over her face and keep walking. Hey, atleast she smiled at us. :) I was like, "hey, that was her..." Sure enough, 10 minutes later the security lady goes, "hey i don't know about u guys, but, i'm going home. you can stay if u want but, she's gone." I was like, "I knew it!" I wish she could have talked to us but I understand if she was tired. She looked so cute walking around in her pink slippers! Anyway, that's my Tori stori thanks for reading it if u got this far. Luv u guys, Amanda ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 18:57:13 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Handal Subject: Howie opening for Tori Hi, All, There seems to be ongoing confusion about Howie Day and the nature of his music. Howie plays acoustic guitar and sings. Every sound coming from the stage and the speakers is one he has made live on the spot--there are no tapes of anything. When he performs live he has a variety of pedals on the floor in front of him which allow him to feed the sounds from his guitar and his vocal microphone through echo devices which can be set to repeat anywhere between one time and endlessly, to slowly fade away, etc. He carefully constructs his songs as he plays by adding specific parts through these looping devices--deciding to stop some of them at will by pressing the pedals again--as he continues to build each piece. It's fascinating to watch him play strummed chords and set them to loop as he then adds percussive effects by hitting his guitar in specific places to get a variety of sounds, each one placed with great care and consideration to produce a full arrangement together and to not conflict with one another as they repeat. Sometimes he builds the percussion sounds first and then joins in strumming the guitar. Sometimes he gets multiple guitar loops going at the same time with multiple layers of vocals and then plays the low string on his guitar live without looping it as if it were a bass guitar. Although he obviously has specific things in mind for each song he seems able to make a lot of decisions about each given performance spontaneously. He's quite crafty about all of this, and from what I have heard, is well respected in the music community. Nothing about him or his music is anything not created in full view of the audience. He's gotten looser as the tour has progressed and has been giving wonderful and heartfelt performances, and twice over this past week I saw audiences give him standing ovations. Personally, I enjoyed seeing and hearing him perform almost as much as I did Willy Porter on the first part of the DDI Tour and the Devlins on the first part of the plugged '98 tour. He seems quite nervous and full of self-doubt, but he has every reason to be proud of the sets I've seen him turn in on this tour. He can come across as being humorless sometimes but he isn't. From what I can tell he's just kind of stiff from being nervous. He can be funny if he tries. I think it was in Columbus that he pointed to some box seats and joked that if he was sitting in one of them he would feel like those guys [Statler and Waldorf] on the Muppet Show. If Tori really continues to tour this album well into the summer I don't know if he'll still be opening for her the whole time, but if he's still on in early 2003 when I next attend a concert I'll be curious to see how he's progressed. If you're going to a Tori concert and can get to the venue when Howie's playing and don't feel the need to wander around in the lobby buying merchandise or visiting with friends I suggest checking out his set. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 21:28:24 -0300 From: "cdrv" Subject: Re: Tori survey! 1. Which is your favourite album?
