[snip] >Tori_Amos_Live says: If you go look at these photographers and their works, >you'll know what I was aiming for. Technically the standards had to be high >to achieve this. It's interesting that Tori mentioned the Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo as one of the influences of her most recent work. He just passed away on October 19. He was 100 years old, and is considered the most renowned photographer in the history of Latin America. In the following links you can see some samples of his work and information about him: http://www.masters-of-photography.com/A/alvarez_bravo/alvarez_bravo.html http://www.zonezero.com/magazine/articles/mraz/alvarezb.html http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/alvarezbravo/photos.html And finally, this an excerpt of the essay of the last link: The provocative juxtapositions of objects as they appear in Alvarez Bravo's photographs may help to explain his appeal to the European Surrealists, drawn to themes of chance and the unconscious. When Andre Breton, the leader and spokesman for Surrealism in Paris, came to Mexico in 1938, he gravitated toward Alvarez Bravo's work. In a frequently recounted tale, the artist remembers that while waiting in line to receive a paycheck, he was interrupted by a phone call made on behalf of Breton. The caller asked the photographer if he would produce an image for the cover of the catalogue for a forthcoming Surrealist exhibition at Galeria de Arte Mexicano. He quickly found the model, bandages, and star cacti that were to become his props for "The Good Reputation Sleeping" (1939). For many this is the artist's most memorable if not most enigmatic photograph, merging elements of sexuality, the unconscious, danger, and healing. Like many of his photographs, its meaning is open-ended and alluring. Do the thorns symbolize protection of the dreamer or are they the source of her "injuries"? Tori Amos Opens Her Secret World Friday October 25, 2002 @ 05:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff Piano chanteuse Tori Amos has worked long and hard on her new concept-driven album Scarlet's Walk, a song-by-song interpretation of modern American history. In celebration of the 18-song album, which Amos produced herself, the singer has prepared all sorts of online goodies to keep fans busy. The disc, which will be released this coming Tuesday (October 29), will come with a key to unlock the "bonus world" (a.k.a. "Scarlet's Web) section on Amos' elaborate website. The bonuses will include extra songs, lyrics, fancy Tori commentary and all sorts of behind-the-scenes videos. As with programs like The Tragically Hip's Hip Club, Scarlet Web visitors will be eligible for treats like ticket giveaways. Amos will launch a tour shortly after Scarlet's Walk's release. There are three Canadian dates: November 20 in Montreal, November 22 in Toronto and December 9 in Vancouver. "I wanted people to be able to discover for themselves the journey that Scarlet and I are taking," Amos says. "In Scarlet's Web you will be able to unlock the inner most details of this fantastic voyage, as well as a few special surprises along the way." Here's a tracklisting for Scarlet's Walk: # "Amber Waves" # "A Sorta Fairytale" # "Wednesday" # "Strange" # "Carbon" # "Crazy" # "Wampum Prayer" # "Don't Make Me Come To Vegas" # "Sweet Sangria" # "Your Cloud" # "Pancake" # "I Can't See New York" # "Mrs. Jesus" # "Taxi Ride" # "Another Girl's Paradise" # "Scarlet's Walk" # "Virginia" # "Gold Dust" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 14:35:43 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: Tori on Fox45 within the hour!! e reported on Tori on Baltimore TV: > I stayed to watch it. This must be a slight point of confusion. Fairfax would be considered the D.C. show. A concert was just announced last week for March 6 in NYC at Radio City Music Hall, which is the home of the Rockettes and yearly runs of the Nutcracker Ballet. I feel confident she was explaining why she isn't playing in NYC this year other than the tiny Riverside Church. In fact, she seems not to have even mentioned the Riverside Church which was nice of her, considering it's sure to sell out in five minutes anyway if they release all the tickets when it goes on sale to the people who know about it already. Thanks for sharing all that, though, Elizabeth. Good deal. I'd been wondering about that. I'm sure she feels bad about that scheduling situation in NYC.
