From Q Magazine, November 2002 3/5 [stars] Never one to do things by half, here the flame haired one takes a metaphorical wander round America - and hey, by extension, herself - in the company of the titular Scarlet, creating an 18-strong song cycle into the bargain. As ever, God, sex, betrayal and redemption loom large, and with lines such as "a dash of truth spread thin like a flag on a popstar on a bendoiazepane" she's still operating at the end of the twig. Yet ear-snagging lyrics are only half the story. And with her piano totally dominant and none of the gothic flourishes of, say, From the Choirgirl Hotel, the music here only rarely matches up. Or maybe it's her party tricks wearing just a little thin. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 10:30:22 -0400 From: "James Gussen" Subject: Re: single clips God, Operation Peter Pan (sorry, should that be all lowercase?) sounds beautiful - plus which: I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it _surreal_ to hear Tori backed by the intricate picking of a solo acoustic guitar. What I did notice from the 30 second clip is that there doesn't seem to be any piano! It seems to be just Tori and an acoustic guitar! The clip I've heard of the 101 Mix seems to have more of a beat to it, but that's the only difference I could hear, and a few extra synth-y notes. Hi Guys, A though that has just occurred to me is that those of you in the UK and Australia with perfect pitch might want to look into obtaining the US version of the Scarlet's Walk Limited Edition, lest you be aggravated to death by the phenomenon of PAL speedup. For those of you who don't know, this is due to the different framerates used in NTSC and PAL, and *generally* this means that the R1 (US) release of a film runs for longer than the R2 or R4 (UK, Europe, Australia) domestic releases because of this. The logical upshot of this is the that the audio track is also sped up by a small amount... I found it particularly distracting when watching Magnolia a couple of days ago, as I'm very familiar with the soundtrack album, and this prompted me to wonder whether the same problem might occur with the new Tori DVD, as presumably the master will be NTSC and then converted to PAL... I'm sure there'll be a page somewhere explaining this technically and properly, but I just thought I'd mention it. Note that you'll probably need a region hacked DVD player to play the US DVD in a UK or Australian player unless they've set the region bit to R0 [all regions] which they may well have as it's a worldwide simultaneous release. Here's the link: > http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&item=909968019 Sellers on eBay tend to say that everything they're selling is rare. The US 'Winter' limited edition single is usually listed by eBay sellers as rare, and I suppose it is, if you think that cockroaches are rare too. Anyway, on to the item itself. This is a legitimate promotional item released during the BfP period. The book contains lots of pictures and not much else. I wouldn't call it 'rare', but it's not as common as the 'Winter' single. It usually goes for around US$20- $25. For any budding Tori collector, I -highly- recommend purchasing a copy of the book _Tori Amos Collectibles_ by Paul Campbell. It was published in 1997, so is rather obviously missing anything from FtCH or later. But for everything from BfP or earlier, it has all the details a collector could want: full-colour pictures, catalogue numbers, track listings, details on the item, etc etc etc. It's a fantastic resource. Amazon has it, or you can buy or order it from your favourite friendly local bookshop. It's the latest transmission from Planet Tori, full of wordplay that is by turns inscrutable, outrageously purple or righteously outraged. Amos' albums have always been obsessed with the quest for self-realization; Scarlet's Walk takes a thinly veiled alter ego on a journey across America in search of the real her. Amos' previous album, the all-covers Strange Little Girls, found her role-playing with a delicious lack of inhibition; Scarlet's Walk is told from a single female protagonist's perspective. But that doesn't stop Amos from having fun. Even when she's fed up, as in "Taxi Ride," the steam rises from a line such as "Even a glamorous bitch can be in need." And when her voice frays, breaking into a Zeppelin-worthy moan on "Pancake," it gives her disillusionment a sensual dimension. Though Jon Evans' voluptuous bass and Matt Chamberlain's empathetic percussion provide ballast, Scarlet is all about Amos and her many musical personae, both as a singer and a keyboard player. She can be unbearably precious ("I put our snowflake under a microscope"), and tunes such as "Crazy" edge perilously toward Enya. But she keeps even her most fulsome phrases conversational, her syntax underlined by rippling, chord-free keyboard lines. The harmonies -- with Amos morphing into a backing choir or whispering responses into her inner ear -- play a similar role. She may be wandering the world by herself, but she's never alone: There's an army of voices inside Tori Amos, and the girl knows how to use them.
