[Mikewh] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 02 Oct 2002 16:29:38 -0400 From: dances with virgos Subject: attitude magazine review snagged from the forum: 4 stars out of a possible 5 "Hot on the heels of last years 'Strange little Girls' covers album and recent decamp to new label Sony, Tori Amos delivers the seventh album of her career (eigth if you include the vaguely embarrassing mid 80's bustiered effort, Y Kant Tori Read). And thankfully its a return to the finely tuned songsmithery of the Tori of yore, fashioned as an imaginatively arrange sonic musical traelogue through America's history, past and present. The story moves in a broad musical sweep as the central character Scarlet - this is Tori, so a little insanity comes as standard - moves from coast to coast delivery songs modelled in a very organic 70's AOR production which both sharpens the aural content of the songs and Tori's distinctive singing voice. From the plinkity plink of crystalline purity of 'Pancake' to the sombre single 'A sorta fairytale', the latter a moving paean to September 11th and the twin cultures of violence and redemption that have sprung forth over the last twelve months, it's impressively solid stuff, but its with 'Amber Waves' that Tori lyrically cuts deepest. Singing in her typically understated plaintive tones, 'DVD and magazines, she gave it up' the songs a concerted jab in the direction of America's pretty young things a la Britney, J-lo et al. Slightly surprising you might think, since she is now stable mates with many of them, but that is Tori all ovrer: this might be Scarlet's journey but Tori certainly isn't bothered where she puts her feet.' ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Oct 2002 16:33:28 -0400 From: dances with virgos Subject: Re: Finally, UK Sorta Fairytale Single info for you! when we last left our heroes, Mike Gray exclaimed: >Official and straight from the horse's mouth... > >[Catalogue Number, Barcode, Format, Release Date] > >6732622 5099767326220 CD Single 5 inch Oct 28, 2002 >6732625 5099767326251 CD Extra Maxi Single Oct 28, 2002 > >CD Single: > >1. I know, you shouldn't judge your current record label by the behaviour of the previous one (Atlantic were from Mars, Epic are from Venus, perhaps). But I'm just having flashbacks to the "no, it really IS out this week! they promised!" conversations I had with sales staff in the Jackie's Raspberry Oceans days, and worrying that the poor beautiful thing might will end up limping out late, having forgotten its keys and wallet and having put its make up on and/or shaved whilst slightly tipsy (in promotional terms), like poor old God and Glory did? Or am I just being jumpy? Or perhaps that only happens to singles that begin with a G.... It's just that (record shop chain) HMV have released their list of all the new releases expected in October and she ain't there :-0 Still, I've joined the "UK Street Team" at toriamos.com and am doing my bit spreading the word with my email footer. Only I think I'm not quite doing it right somehow...
