Random thought I thought I'd share... Tonight I was listening to Joni Mitchell's amazing "Shadows and Light" album and, as often happens when I listen to it, I got stuck on side two of the first disc and had to keep moving the needle back to hear one particular song over and over again. (Yes, I said, "side two" and "the needle". I don't have this album on CD. Yet.) And while I was listening to this one special song for the nth time, it suddenly occurred to me that it would be a wonderful thing of almost unbearable intensity if Tori would cover this particular Joni song. Those of you who are familiar with this album have probably already guessed which song I'm talking about. "Amelia". Think about it. Wouldn't that be monumentally great? "Amelia" is so beautiful and so rich in imagery and emotional texture... And I can imagine, roughly at least, how Tori's version would be. It would totally work in the Tori idiom and it would be nothing short of stunning, imho. If I sat down and thought about it, I'm sure I could come up with a dozen Joni songs I'd like to hear Tori do. The two she already does -- "A Case of You" and "River" -- would probably be the top two anyway, so I count myself lucky there. But, adding "Amelia" to the Joni cover quiver would make me extremely happy. For those of you who aren't familiar with the song I'm talking about, I've included the lyrics at the end of this mail. Of course reading them on your computer screen without hearing the mesmerizing melody is a poor shadow of the proper experience, but at least it gives you an idea of the substance of the song. - -bt Amelia by Joni Mitchell I was driving across the burning desert When I spotted six jet planes Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain It was the hexagram of the heavens it was the strings of my guitar Amelia it was just a false alarm The drone of flying engines Is a song so wild and blue It scrambles time and seasons if it gets though to you Then your life becomes a travelogue Of picture post card charms Amelia it was just a false alarm People will tell you where they've gone They'll tell you where to go But till you get there yourself you never really know Where some have found their paradise Others just come to harm Oh, Amelia it was just a false alarm I wish that he was here tonight It's so hard to obey His sad request of me to kindly stay away So this is how I hide the hurt As the road leads cursed and charmed I tell Amelia it was just a false alarm A ghost of aviation She was swallowed by the sky Or by the sea like me she had a dream to fly Like Icarus ascending On beautiful foolish arms Amelia it was just a false alarm Maybe I've never really loved I guess that is the truth I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude And looking down on everything I crashed into his arms Amelia it was just a false alarm I pulled into the Cactus Tree Motel To shower off the dust And I slept on the strange pillows of my wanderlust I dreamed of 747s Over geometric farms Dreams Amelia - dreams and false alarms - -- - -- -bt - -- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 09:56:12 -0400 From: "Penny King" Subject: Scarlet's Walk Tracklisting at Amazon.com! I am sorry to report that, for reasons of preservation, this is a bad idea. The specific rule I have heard is to not play a grooved disc more than twice in one hour because the friction causes enough heat to soften the fragile walls, allowing the high end areas of them to become mishapen and thus distorted. When I was working in a major research archive of sound recordings we were not allowed to play a grooved disc more than twice in one *day*. [The National Library of Canada] http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/6/28/s28-1019-e.html The Preservation of Recorded Sound Materials Discs Dust is abrasive, and combined with the pressure exerted on the groove walls by the stylus, can permanently etch the walls worse, dust can also be imbedded permanently into thermoplastic substances. Only a small point of the stylus is actually making contact with the groove walls. One and a half grams of stylus pressure on such a minute surface translates to several tons of pressure per square inch. The resulting drag generates enough heat that the plastic partially melts (though not enough to deform), causing a microscopic flow around the stylus into which dust can be embedded permanently. [Not enough melting to deform during a single playing, at any rate.] I suspect this effect holds less true with 7" polystyrene 45s (which is almost all of them) and 78s which were pressed from shellac and other (sometimes rubber-based) compounds, but surely holds most true for vinyl LPs. Vinyl discs when taken care of, however, will outlast any tape ever manufactured and, in fact, the BBC keeps their (woefully incomplete) radio archives on 10" and 12" LPs which they have had pressed for this purpose. (This was true until quite recently, at any rate. If they've gone digital it would not surprise me.) Sorry to rain on your parade. Transfer the damn LP to a CD-R, Brian. Accepting all spoiled tomatoes and brickbats, now. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 22:13:27 +0000 From: "Jennifer Teapot" Subject: My website has been updated Not very interesting, I know, but I've made a new layout, added a new poll (because Beseen has been shut down, the results from the last one were lost), added some more news and I'm about to add some new skins. I guess I shouldn't say how old my stylus is then! But seriously, this is good to know because I do have some items on vinyl that I want to preserve. - -- - -- -bt - -- ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V7 #196 *************************************
